I.

Purpose
a. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to
the difference between congruent and similar shapes,
lines, or angles. This will be the first day of a two-day unit.
b. SOL MA. 6.12: The student will determine congruence if
segments, angles and polygons.
II. Objectives
a. The student will be able to use everyday objects to
measure segments, angles, and polygons and determine if
they are similar or congruent with accuracy.
III. Procedure
a. Introduction
i. Ask students what it means to be similar. Ask the
students what it means to be congruent.
ii. Go over the Elmo notes. The notes also have
examples included. Call on students and have them
answer the example questions.
iii. Go over congruency worksheet on the Elmo. Call on
students and ask them if they angle, polygon, and
segments are either congruent or non congruent. Ask
the student to explain their reasonings.
b. Development
i. Next, pass out the congruent figures worksheet.
Have the students work on these independently and
quietly.
ii. Once the students have finished, have them check
their answers with their elbow partner.
iii. If the students cannot agree with an answer, help the
students through the problem in order to get the
correct answer.
iv. Finish the worksheet by calling on students to give
their answers to the worksheet.
c. Summary

i. Finish the day by passing out the journal worksheet.


Have the students cut and paste the worksheet into
their math journal.
ii. Ask and answer any questions regarding the
material.
iii. Tell students of test date (Friday.)

V. Adaptations
a. For Evan, the student with autism, allow him to work in the
hall with his partner if it is too loud for him. Remind him of
where his focus should be throughout the lesson. Also, if
need be, have him sit at the round table by himself.
VI. Evaluation Part A
a. There will be no formal assessment for this lesson. As you
are walking around the classroom while the students are
working, take note of any questions or concerns.
