TRANSDUCER connector. ONOFF switeh, ‘CEG (Configuration) switch. MODE switch, POS (Position) swite, nepese 3. GK-404 Operation Install afresh se of (2) 1.5V AA batteries per the instructions in section 6.1 Battery Installation and Replacement ‘The OK-404 Virating Wire Readout arrives witha patch cord for connecting othe vibrating wire anges. One end will consist ofa 5-pin plug. for connecting tothe respective socket onthe bottom of the GK-404 enclosure. The other end will consist of 5 leads terminated wit alligator clips. Note the colors ofthe alligator clipe are red, black, green, white aed bluc. The colors represent the positive vibrating wire gage lead (ed), negative vibrating wire gage lead (Diack), positive thermistor lea (green), negative thermistor led (white) and transducer cable drain wire (Glue). The clips should be connected to their respectively colored leads from the vibrating wire gage cable. Push the ON/OFF burton, The inital sreen wil display Geokon Tne. GK-404 verXX Press for Config Menu ‘Aftc approsimtely 1 sevoud, dae GK-404 will start aking readings acl dsplay them based on the seitings of the POS and MODE switches. Atypical reading screen for the GK-404 would be: Pos Reading degC B 5201.03 24.5 In this case, the position selected is B, the vibrating wire reading is $201.6 Digits (F210), and the transducer temperature is 24.5° Celsius, Pressing the MODE switch wil result in: Pos Reading degC 1B 2280.7Hz 245 displaying the vbrating wire reading in Hert{H2). Pressing the MODE switch again will result Pos Reading deg B 438.5u8 245 ‘The GK-404 will continue to take measurements and display the readings until the OFF button is pushed, or ifensbled, when the automatic Power-OfF dase abuts the GK-404 off. 3M POS (POSITION) SWITCH Pressing the POS switch will select the proper pluck settings forthe vibrating wire gage ‘that you want o read. 32 MODE SWITCH Pressing the MODE switch wil select the format ofthe vibrating wire reading: Dg (Gigits), Hz (benz), nS (period) or pi (mierostain). Each Position seting(A-F) has ciffeent preprogrammed parameters that are optimized for ‘certain instruments. Low Battery Indication and Auto-Off ‘The OK -404 continuously monitors the status ofthe (2)13V AA cells, and when their combined voltage drops to 2V, the message Batteries Low is displayed on he screen. A fresh set of 1.5V ‘AA batteries should be installed at this point. [rte battery voltage drops to 1.8V, the message: REPLACE BATTERIES is displayed on the sereen, and the GK-404 wil shut itself off Al settings are still saved in ‘intemal non-volatile memory. 5. Maintenance $.1 Battery Installation and Replacement (@) 1.5 AA Batteries need tobe installed in the GK-404, Alkaline batteries ar the best choice and a sets provided with the GK-404 Readout. Use af! Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery compartment cover located in the back ofthe readout and install the buateries following the polarities indicated inside the battery compartment. Reinstall the battery compartment cover [Never use two different types of batteries or mix old batteries with new. This could cause batteries to leak and permanently damage the readout. Although alkaline batteries are highly recommended, standard “AA" batteries can be used. 52 Cleaning ‘clean cloth can be used to wipe down the GK-404 Readout. No solvents should be ‘sed as they may damage the ase of the readout 583 Calibration ‘The readout shouldbe sent periodically (every 12 months) back othe manufacturer for inspection, cleaning, and calibration. A nominal fe will be charged forthe service, but it ishighly recommended 6. TROUBLESHOOTING Listed below are afew commonly experienced problems and remedial action. Contact the factory should a problem arise not explained herein. 6.1 Unit will not come on Internal batteries are ether dead or installed backwards. 62 Vibrating wire gage measurement shows dashes Check Alligator Clip connections to vibrating wire gage leads. If okay, check gage with COhmmeter. It should read between 90 and 180 ohms. If gage resistance is okay, check Readout with another gnge. Ifill doesn't work consult the factory to schedule return and repair of| Readout. 63 Vibrating wire gage reading unstable Improper POSitio selected, Verify gxge model number against the recommended setting. 1f switch POSition is correct, the gage is either marginal or there may be a strong source of eecto- ‘magnetic interference nearby. 6.4 Thermistor measurement shows dashes (Check Alligator Clip connections to Thermistor leads. Ifokay, check Thermistor with COhmmeter. I should read between 10K ohms and 2.4K ols (0 to +30 degrees Celsius), IF Theristar checks out okay consult factory to schedule repair of Readout. Note: Dashes wil Aisplay no Thermistor is connected! 7. Limits of Liability ‘The GK-404 Vibratng Wire Readout has been developed specifically for we with Geokon, ne. vibrating wire gages and, as such, Geokon, Ine. assumes no responsibility for its use with other systems. Every effort has been made to ensure reliable operation, but the user must be aware that there is no waranty against uninerrpted or trouble-free operation. Forth user conducting particularly unusual or sensitive analysis, ofr those ‘not familiar with virating wire gage data processing its recommended thatthe problems be double checked using another measurement system. Also, the readout i provided ‘ais and Geokon, Inc. assumes no responsibility as to results, performanc, or interpretation associated with the GK-404 Vibrating Wire Readout. Warranty shall cover parts (except batteries) and labor fora period of 1 year ffom the date of purchase In adition, there isa I-month grace peried to the warranty for total of 13 months, We reserve the right to revise this publication and/or readout from te to time with no ‘obligation to notify asers ofthese changes.
