Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mind map showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, and digital technologies)

In my animation I will use film and animation that

will be presented through digital technologies to
install my video, I will display all the videos I
have collaborated through screened devices such
as laptop screens, computer desktops and tablet
screens. I also intend to project the image from the
computer onto a backdrop with a projector and all
the screens including the image on the projector
will be playing a clip simultaneously. Each screen
on every device will be playing the same clip that
I have montaged into a playlist from the previous
years. The clips will include my animation that I
constructed previously, a corporate video for the
college that I created last year and my final major
production witch I filmed and edited recently.

All the visuals in the installation will be presented

at the same time, I intend this to produce an
interesting effect that appears to add depth to the
exhibition, and overall this effect should develop
into a unique atmosphere with an imbedded theme
that underlies the installation. This will be the
major eye catching factor to the production and
will introduce the topic of the production to the
viewers subconsciously, the multiple screens will
aid my intended appearance of the installation and
will make the exhibition more consistent as the
look will match the style in the videos playing. I
will make the multiple screens affect a major
element in the showcasing of the multiple digital
technologies and this tool can be a practical
method of display.

My
installation

The main visual in my installation production will

be the projector that is also displaying video
whilst my exhibition is present. This will
essentially display an enlarged version of the
video clips that are playing on all the digital
technological devices. I will use the digital
technologies to display film and animation that
wee created previously for other productions;
therefore I will be using a multiple camera
technique as the on-going theme for my
installations live show. With this occurring I will
attempt to keep the style of my exhibition simple,
however by using the different sources of
displaying the video, the showcasing of the video
work starts to appear a more third dimensional
event through the depth that is created.

The installation theme that I am trying to create is

inspired by Nam June Paik who is a contemporary
video installation artist who also uses multiple
screens to showcase her work, the multiple screens
displaying video are a important factor of the
installation as she also uses this to attempt to
create an atmosphere by using her surroundings,
objects and space to develop moods. The piece of
work that inspired me to design my installation
exhibition with a multiple display appearance was
the 1984 video installation called Good Moring
Mr Orwell. Therefore I will follow the basis for
the structuring of the installation as this piece of
work that involves various screens all displaying
video either at the same time or by using
unsynchronized collaborated clips.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner and the other should be contemporary.
Past Practitioner
Name:

Nam June Paik

Biography

Nam June Paik was a well-recognised video artist and

installation exhibitioner; he was considered a revolutionist
with video art and a large influence on the innovation of video
art and installations. Many major retrospectives have been
the subject of Paiks work ever since he started developing
amateur video in the mid 1960s up to his death in 2006 and
continue to inspire further generations of video artists.

Images

Notes on their installation

Their installation has a simple appearance as it doesnt

feature many physical objects or sources for video projection,
however by using layers of flat video images, the artist is
able to add depth to their installation creating an exhibition
with more atmosphere developed from the video display.
This installation is one of the earliest forms of video
installation so therefore it is not very developed however it
showcases itself as a blueprint for future video installations.

How is it similar to your ideas?

It is similar to my ideas, as I will also feature multiple video

sources to display video in a sequence that will have many
output sources for images. The work of this installation also
often features montaged clips with pre-recorded footage
taken by the artist depending on the materiel needed for the
video art installations; my video will also display pre-recorded
footage from work that I have previously recorded.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Contemporary Practitioner
Name:

Nadia Hironaka

Biography

Nadia Hironaka is a modern and on-going video installation

artist who owns a Masters in fine art from the college of
Chicago. She has won many awards such as the New york
short exhibition award; she has modern credibility and is
considered a great achiever for the newer generation of
video installation artists. Hironaka gained publicity for her
productions in 2008 with her work The Fall and ever since
has had collaborations with artists and museums.

Images

Notes on their installation

Hironakas illustrations are more projectors and show based

often-featuring only one screen at a time with images being
shown, as appose to Paiks work witch would have had
multiple cameras. Hironaka may rely solely on one projection
at a time but she does not fail to create depth in her
illustrations, she adds depth by using shadows to her
exhibition, this often creates the illusion of third dimensional
art and can make the experience for the viewers deeper.

How is it similar to your ideas?

It is similar to my idea because I will also be using a projector

to display video as my main source of video output display;
the artist Hironaka also uses a more modern approach to
showcasing video installations. In my production I will use
modern technologies to use as a practical form of displaying
my production as well as a show for creating a more modern
atmosphere for my exhibition.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Installation / set sketches

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to
identify equipment, where the image will be seen, where the audience will stand etc.

The Installation will

have three IPads that
will be playing video
whilst a hidden
projector in the
background will
enlarge the image onto
a backdrop that is hung
behind the installation.
The IPads will be on
the table that is covered
with a black tablecloth
that will be surrounded
by coloured LED lights
on each side
surrounding the table.
The images that will be
presented to the
audience will be seen
on the three IPads,
however the main
source of viewing will
be the backdrop behind
the installation that is
hung up and will have
a image being
projected onto it from a
projector that is hidden
under the table cloth
and out of sight from
the spectators of the
video exhibition.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
My final major project will have both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, the diegetic sounds will be the
practical sound effects and Foley that will occur in the background of the video, for example the sound
of a perfume bottle being prayed can be heard; this was added in to the video. However my video is
mostly non-diegetic sounds such as the music that plays in the background of the advertisement that
can be heard throughout the whole video. The speech in my video is also non-diegetic as it is a sound
bite from a pre-recorded audio file.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

In my installation I will use speakers to play the audio of the video clips, I will use speakers because I
believe it will create a more dynamic experience for the viewers of the expedition. Speakers will create
a better outcome that I intend for my production as they will reach the full potential that headphones
may not be able to achieve, and they will add to the atmosphere of the exhibition because I am creating
a installation that is designed to draw in audience from the viewers.

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
In my installation I will have a minimum lighting setup as I intend the surroundings to seem like a
cinema look or a neon lighting look, therefore I will have two bars of LED lights that slightly light up the
sides of my table producing a glow effect, and if necessary I will have two film stage lights that will light
up the table area as my main source, however the projectors light will produce some lighting as well. I
have chosen these because they will be very easy to set up and have few wires between them to avoid
any health and safety risks occurring during the production.

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

(birds eye view) Key: orange objects are light sources; they include LED lights and projector lights.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
My project will be played on small screens and a projector.

Why?

They will be played on both sources

because I believe that it is a more
effective way of grabbing the audiences
attention as they can view the projector
from a distance and get drawn into the
installation from which they can get a
closer viewing of the video through
three different small screens.

If you are projecting what will

you project ONTO? (ie fabric,
screen, materials etc)

I will project onto a backdrop that will

be made of fabric, this is because the
materiel is easy to acquire and is a good
conductor for video. The fabric will be a
sheet of smooth white to be able to
clearly display the video onto.

If you are using a screen, will you

use a single screen, or multiple
screens?

I will use multiple screens that will be

simultaneously playing the same video;
the multiple screen effect will be more
eye catching to the viewers and will aid
my intended atmosphere as well as
being a practical method of viewing.

How will that change how your

audience READS your animation?

The audience will read the

animation differently because the
multiple screens will add depth to
the production and create layers
making it perceived with a more
third dimensional effect.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?
Technological convergence describes the method of upgrading a device to a more modern or advanced
tool from the previous technological tool to perform the same task. By making technological
conversance apply to products, we are essentially replacing the older method of performing tasks with
the newer methods that include a more danced manor of operating.

Will you be using this in your installation?

I will be using this in my installation because I will be displaying my videos through new IPad tablets
that are a useful and effective modern tool of preforming my intended tasks, when previously I would
have required more bulky operating systems such as computer desktops that would preform the same
task but be more inconvenient as they take up more room and may perform slower.

Explain your answer.

To create the intended effect I am trying to achieve which involves the blend and crossover of modern
methods of displaying video and previous methods I will use the tablets to show technological
convergence. The audience will view the images through the screens of the tablets which are an
upgraded way of showcasing the images from the other source witch is the projector.

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

The works of the artists I have

researched have inspired me because
I have gained knowledge on modern
methods of installing videos.

venue and facilities

Venues have inspired me because I

have learnt how artists use the space
they have to create atmospheres or
develop moods within their space.

lighting

The lighting I have researched has

inspired me because I have
discovered that by changing the light
or the light source I can alter the mood
of the exhibition for the viewers.

sound

The sound I have researched have

influenced my ideas because I have
learnt that by using speakers instead
of headphones I can create the
intended effect I am attempting to
achieve quicker with my installation.

screens / projectors

I have learnt that some artists can

blend multiple screens in their work to
immerse the audience deeper into the
installation, and they can also use
projectors to create third dimensional
effects in their video exhibitions.

speakers / headphones

From this I have learnt methods that

influenced the source of the sound
from the installation and how I can use
these to create different atmospheres.

Copyright issues
What potential copyright issues could your FMP infringe?
My final major project could infringe some issues such as product placement issues by using Chanels
logo throughout my production as well as the Chanel bottle that is also present during the sequence.
The other issues are the audio in my production; this involves music infringement copyright laws with
the record company (EMI), as I will be playing a track that is entitled to the record company. The other
audio issues such as sound effects are not infringing any laws because they are royalty free, and the
other picture issues are filmed and recorded by me so they do not have the potential for issues.

How can you be certain that your work does not violate any copyright infringements?
I can be certain that they do not violate any issues as I will take some precautions before publishing my
video online, these include analysing the terms and conditions of the record company and perfume
brand to assure that they allow educational purposes. I will then write a conformation email to the
companies to ensure that I have confirmation for the actions I will take, by doing this I will have gained
permission to precede in the production publishing as long as I do not break the other rules.
