Reflective Overview
This class gave me like four out of five of the assignments I have to do. So naturally
Ive wrote several essays about different topics, in different methods and with different
people. Throughout the semester Ive learned that it is easy to write, but it is extremely hard
to write well. Anyone can write about a subject, but taking the quality of my writing to the
next level was tough.
During this semester Ive wrote about many different topics. Earlier this semester, the
main focus of my writing was people. I wrote about myself and my partner. Then a few
weeks before the mid-terms, we were assigned in groups to work together. Both collaborative
writing was about non-fiction, a group research paper and an application proposal. Later this
semester, I was assigned to write a research paper and a literary analysis paper. So, I wrote
about a person, about non-fiction and fiction. Writing about people was the easiest of the
three. It was a more casual topic that we come across every day. The only research I
practically needed was information about my partner. The 6-word autobiography was a
creative piece of writing where I simply tried to express myself, thus it did not require any
research. Ive felt that this type of casual writing was not useful in developing my writing
skills. The only help I could receive was mostly related with grammar and minor problems
with expression. Although it is easier to accomplish compared to researched writing, I wanted
something more complicated. Then group writing came along and made everything harder.
The group writing assignments taught me the importance of communication. Without
communication among group members, the writing cannot be finished and the results turn out
to be a disaster. The reliability of researched information is also important, because if the
group members are doubtful of my research, then my information loses power if its not form
a reliable source. This lesson was particularly helpful in my research paper assignment. It was
an assignment that required the most amount of research. Citing plausible sources was a key
in advancing the persuasiveness of my paper. Ive learned in more depth about how to make a
research question and how to write an essay about a non-fiction topic.
Writing about fiction was my literary analysis essay. The assignment was actually
enjoyable, and I would like to mention it as my best writing this semester. The essay is an
analysis on the short story Hotel Imperial, and it focuses on the conflicts throughout the
story. The essay lists the conflicts between the protagonist and the different subjects.
Analyzing a short story in many angles was intriguing, and it was good to have a chance to
read a decent short story that has so many metaphoric and implicative expressions. I chose
the literary analysis as my best writing because it is well organized. This assignment has
taught me more about how literature could be considered as a work of art.

Around the time when our class formed groups for our assignments, I became a
member of the musical club, where Ive admittedly laid off my studies. Ive become too lazy
in my studies that I wasnt able to concentrate in any of my assignments. There are many of
my classmates who were in the same club, but theyve completed their assignments in time. I
learned that I had less passion in my studies, compared to my classmates. Some of my
assignments were not submitted in time, simply because I was postponing my duties as a
HUFS student until the last moment. As a result, the first draft of my research paper had to be
submitted as my final draft, and the quality and length of the essay is poor. Also my first
portfolio wasnt even resubmitted at all. Based on my recent participation as a student of this
class, Id frankly say I deserve the grade I earned in my first portfolio. But I wont regret my
actions during this semester because Ive learned a lot. From this class and many other
classes as well, and from my experience of appearing in a musical. Ive recently decided to
spend my summer break thinking about what to do with my life. Preparing a musical was
something that Ive never tried before and it was surprisingly enjoyable. I want to have a
dream, a goal I could always look upon and focus on getting to it. I currently dont have
much of a career plan, and feel like Im lost. So Im planning to find and make one, before
its too late. One of the fields Im really interested in right now is writing. When I was a
child, I wanted to write novels when I grew up. During my school years, however, Ive
forgotten about my goal and focused more on studying various subjects like my classmates
did. I dont know if Im a good writer, and Im sure that Im a lazy man. But I would like to
take some time thinking whether writing is the right course for me.

SORRY I DONT TALK VERY MUCH

These five words describe a part of my personality. I spend a lot of my time

daydreaming or thinking ahead. For example, while walking with my friends after class, I
think about what I should do after arriving at my dorm room. I focus more on thinking alone
rather than trying to start a conversation. I do enjoy talking, but I usually dont feel the need
to start a conversation, unless I have to ask or mention something important. This aspect of
my personality has become a problem. Most people believe that Im timid and depressed all
the time because I dont start a conversation very often, especially with people who I dont
know very well. Ive seen lots of people who were frustrated with how I remain quiet. So I
try to be more extroverted and talkative. I practice clarifying my pronunciation and accent to
lighten the mood of my speech, and I give more effort on bringing up a subject to talk about.
I also try to listen more carefully to what others are saying, because that helps with making
better feedback and reactions.

Professional Student Profile

Donghyun Ma is a freshman majoring English Interpretation
and Translation at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Ever since
he was a child, he enjoyed various TV shows, movies and video
games in English. By translating video game manuals and movies in
English on his own, he casually gained his interest in English
language. As he started to help out his classmates by translating
English novels in Korean, he realized that he likes translating foreign
language into Korean. Since he wanted to learn more about translating
English into Korean, he decided to come to HUFS and major in EIT (English Interpretation
and Translation). Also, being widely interested in foreign languages, he is now in the process
of learning new languages: English, French, and Japanese.

DONT MISS OUT THE CHANCE IN FRONT OF YOU

ENJOY THE MOMENT!
While attending Hueng-jin High school in Gunpo, Donghyun was an active member
of the basketball club. As he was readily engaged in the activity, he realized that he was
becoming healthy both mentally and physically. He said that as soon as he realized that my
body was becoming healthy, he also felt that I was becoming more passionate and willingly
focusing on his schoolwork, just as a famous quote goes a sound mind in a sound body.
Such experience has taught him that engaging in physical activity is as important as studying
and reading books. He received several big awards while in
high school; he was twice awarded from English
competition conference at his school. Particular thing about
him is that he has never left Korea for the purpose of
learning English. Although he had once considered going
abroad when he was in middle school, he never got a
chance to do so. Instead, he continued learning English by
being a translator to his classmates and friends when most
of them werent familiar with English. This experience has
built up his confidence in learning language, and
influenced him to go on with his study while many other
students have experience in living in English-speaking languages. Although translating and
interpreting English to Korean is his biggest interest, he says that hes not sure if he wants to
work in such field. Instead, he is interested in working Information Technology field. Like

most freshmen students, he is learning about himself and setting up his future path as he takes
his first step as a university student.

POWER BLOGGER: HOW TO WRITE A GOOD

BLOG

With the advent of internet, blogs are quickly settling as the new generation of online
communication. The number of blogs is growing astronomically, so it is only natural for most
of them to remain unnoticed. There are some common characteristics of successful blogs;
popular, engaging, informative, and differentiated blogs are the examples of those. To write a
good blog, bloggers have to name the title well, post valuable contents, optimize search
engine, and write it in the bloggers voice.
A good way to write a blog is to use titles effectively. Titles are the first content of
the blog that people see, and play a crucial role in their decision of whether to click or not.
Here, using effective titles will make blogs more eye-catching and easy to understand,
leading more clicks. Good titles are simple and memorable because they attract people at a
glance. To do so, bloggers have to use succinct catch words with controversies the titles can
be a little exaggerated but it would definitely attract attention. For instance, the title How to
speed up your Android of an article about making smart phones faster is more likely to catch
attention than Removing unused apps and applying modifications that optimize Android for
the same article as its both simple and attention-grabbing. Another way to write an effective
title is to make it descriptive and meet a need. Descriptive titles show the readers what the
7 | Page

article is actually about, which may give them an incentive for further reading. Also, titles
that promise solutions to peoples needs are more effective, as that is what people are looking
for after all. Expressions such as How to or The fastest way are some good phrases that
meet peoples needs, which make the blog more noticeable and attractive.
Good blogs should contain valuable contents. Although the readers have different
opinions about what the useful contents are, bloggers need to consider the contents foremost.
There are blogs for entertainment, education, information, debate, news and community. Each
blog's readers want different information. For example, in an educational blog, readers like to
learn more about controversial topics or issues. However, in a blog about entertainment,
readers are thirsted for getting information about new it-places, movies and restaurants.
Therefore to make perfect blogs, bloggers should post valuable information for their readers.
Search engine optimization is used throughout many popular blogs. It is a complex
form of internet marketing that makes the blogs show up more often on search engines. One
of the easiest ways to do this is to optimize the title of the webpage. To make the title prone to
search engines, the title needs to contain keywords that are concise and frequently searched.
Another tactic to gain attention is to add citations from sites that are trustworthy. Not only
will search engines prioritize blogs with professional reference, but it would also attract
viewers. Organizing content is equally important. Being concise and logical is crucial to
writing a good blog, and any other form of writing as well.
Lastly, the key to write an attractive and unique blog is to write it in the bloggers
voice so that readers feel more attached and personal to the blogger. Blog is where people
share their interests and passion by posting and commenting. Most readers do not visit a blog
for professional academic writing, rather for personal and engaging posts and photos.
However, some bloggers use too much technical jargon and clich to make their blogs look
more professional. Those blogs usually lack interests and no more different to other pages,
articles and journals we can find on Google. Bloggers have to remember that they are
communicating with readers. Therefore, they have to put their characteristics in their writings
to personalize and differentiate with other postings.
In conclusion, to write a successful blog, bloggers have to use titles efficiently to
attract readers, post suitable and valuable contents, utilize search engine optimization and use
their voice to differentiate with others. Attractiveness, accessibility and uniqueness are the
key to a good blog. Blogosphere is the trend in the information society. There are numerous
advantages of using blogs such as sharing ideas and making global friends, but there are some
downsides that blinded bloggers and readers should consider first and foremost: privacy is
one of the examples.

We are living in a modern era where technology is present to make our life easier and
more comfortable. Applications or apps are one of the few things that came into our lives
recently and has become something that almost every single person with smartphones or
computers will need to carry on with their daily life. There are apps for almost everything
from messaging to games and one of the mostly used app nowadays is educational app.
Students are always busy preparing for exams and completing assignments. It will be very
helpful to all the students if there is an app that can help them with their revision and at the
same time works as a writing tool that has the function to trace grammar errors. This can help
students to study more effectively and reduce grammar mistakes when they are writing an
essay. This proposal will include a basic introduction of an existing app, the problems of the
app that should be improvised and proposal of ideas on how to improve the existing app.
There are many different types of app that helps students to study in a more efficient
way or to check grammar mistakes. Some of them are very effective and useful, but there are
flaws on the currently existing apps that should be improvised to create a better app. We hope
to improve an existing app called Conquer.com so that it can be an app that all students prefer
to use for studying and writing. Conquer.com is currently one of the most used educational
app and is accessible through the website itself and also through smartphone app stores for
free. Conquer.com is an app that allows users to create notes, flashcards, quizzes and mind
map to decrease the dullness of studying. We have tried conquer.com through Internet
Explorer, but the experience was not as smooth as what we have experienced with Google
chrome so this will be the first thing that should be improved. Secondly, everything that are
created on conquer.com is public and there are no option to make things private. All the
notes, flashcards and quizzes can be seen by all the members of conquer.com so people who
prefers higher privacy level will most probably not prefer to use this app. Lastly and the most
important aspect that should be added into conquer.com as one of the main function is the
grammar checking tool. There are many different grammar checking tools like 'Grammarly'
and 'Gingers Spell and Grammar Checker' online and also in the app stores but all of them
operates individually which means the app will solely help users to check and identify
10 | P a g e

grammar errors and no other functions are offered. Some of these apps are not free and app
purchasers will sometimes hesitate if the app is really worth the price when it only offers one
function. It will be advantageous and beneficial for students if there is an app that provides
useful study tools and at the same time allows them to perform grammar check on notes or
essays that were written using the app.
Then why not just use one of the existing apps instead of writing a boring app
proposal? Well, the apps we found were certainly helpful in improving our writing. But they
werent as good as we expected them to be. Conquer.com helps us to make flashcards and
mind maps, which is great because many writers, even advanced writers experience problems
with organizing ideas. However, Conquer.com gives us no help in grammar. People like us,
who write at a basic university level, tend to make lots of errors regarding grammar. Without
fixing our habit of grammatical errors, we can never advance our writing. Sure, there are
other apps that checks our grammar and spelling. But it is very inconvenient to use multiple
apps simultaneously. So we need an app that can assist us with both idea organization and
grammar. Neither factor is more important than the other. In order to improve our writing
skills, we need all the help we can get.
Improvements to the website Conquer.com, a site designed to help people write, can
transform it into a very useful application for university students. The website itself is very
productive, with features such as online storage, smartphone application, note creation,
flashcards, quizzes, and mind map that are not only useful for the writing itself but also for
outlining and brainstorming. However, it has major flaws such as the inability to make
writings private, lower performance when used on the Internet Explorer, and the lack of
grammar checking tool. These shortfalls of this website make it less functional for students,
who mostly use the Internet Explorer, write contents that may be private, and need grammar
check tool. By augmenting the website with these features and refinements, students can
better meet their needs in writing. For these reasons, we propose these improvements of
conquer.com as a method to enhance students' writing experience using digital devices.

Game Review Braid
Braid is a platform puzzle game. It was released on April 10th, 2009. Braid would
seem like a simple platformer in the early stages of the game. But this game has a twist; the
protagonist is able to travel back through time. As the game progresses further, more puzzles
require the complex understanding of time reversal and its consequences.
The ability to rewind time renders the player invincible. When Tim dies, whether its
because of deadly flower rabbits or spiked floors, the game soon pauses and tells the player to
press the rewind button. The player can simply go back to the moment before death and start
over. Any failed attempt can be undone. Game over is never a part of the game.

If the player is invincible, then wouldn't the game be extremely easy? Actually, most
of the puzzles in the game are annoyingly creative, meaning that they are not simply solved
by physical trial and error. For example, objects with green outlining are not effected by time
reversal, thus they cannot be undone. Sometimes these green objects are obstacles, but time
to time they also act as a key to solving a puzzle. Many other game mechanics such as time
shadows and time warps get in the way of the player.

12 | P a g e

Braid features an ingenious storyline as well. In the early zones of Braid, the
environment is bright and hopeful. Tim, the protagonist, tries to save a princess who was
kidnapped by an evil knight. Later on in the game, the atmosphere gets darker and the signs
of hope diminishes. By the ending of the game, the player would realize that Braid is filled
with metaphoric statements and symbols. It criticizes a certain tragic incident long ago, and it
also draws the player to think about reality in a different way. Things aren't always as the way
they seem.

13 | P a g e

In short, Braid is simple yet complex, creative and philosophical. The time reversal
trick may lead people to think that the game is too hardcore and brain teasing. But the game
isn't difficult at all. With just a bit of thinking, you'll realize that the puzzle was actually
simple. You just have to think out of the box and look at things in a different way. The
gameplay itself and its story both taught me not to accept everything as it is, but analyze it
from a different angle.

Game Review Devil May Cry 4

Honestly, I can't deny that this game is filled with unrealistic violent action that
doesn't help us in any academic way. But I can't help but say that this game is just damn
delightful.

Devil May Cry 4 is the latest title of the series (besides from the spin-off title created
by Ninja Theory 'DMC: Devil May Cry'). It was released for PC on July 11th, 2008. A new
upgraded version of the game is planned to be released soon on June 23rd, 2015. DMC4 is
famous for its superhuman 'hack and slash' combat action. The sub-genre 'spectacle fighter'
would best describe this game. Combat is filled with endless combinations and aerial
maneuvers.

14 | P a g e

DMC4 introduces a new protagonist to the series. The original protagonist

Dante(right) is replaced by Nero(left). The two protagonists go through several conflicts with
each other during the story. The plot is basically both protagonists trying to protect what they
care about against common evil, even though the protagonists are half-demons. But I don't
give much about the plot of this game. This isn't the kind that carries deep implicative
messages, it's mostly about bashing enemies up in the most creative and efficient way
possible. Still, I like how the characters are attractive in their own ways. Both characters are
playable, and they use different weapons and combos.

15 | P a g e

Nero mainly uses his Red Queen, a sword that seems to have a motor attached to its
handle, and Blue Rose, a 6-chamber revolver. His right arm is demonic, and he uses it to his
advantage in combat. Dante shreds demons with his trusty Rebellion, a sword passed on to
him by his legendary father. He also uses his two demonic handguns, Ebony & Ivory. Both
the Rebellion and Ebony & Ivory were Dante's weapon of choice throughout the series. Dante
also utilizes the power of the bosses he kill, and assembles them into a new weapon.
Devil may cry 4 is a great game to play if you're simply seeking to destroy things.
There's not much of a lesson you could learn from this game. But the graphics and physics of
the game is outstanding, highly recommend if your purpose is pure violence in a digital
world. It does its job well as an action game, it entertains the users by its stress-relieving
powerful combat.

Introducing Myo The Gesture Control Armband

Myo is the revolutionary product developed by Thalmic Labs. It does just what the
name implies. Myo analyzes the electric signals emitted through the muscles of the arm. It
16 | P a g e

then recognizes the gesture that is being held and sends gesture-specific control signals to the
linked electronic device.
The first idea for the prototype was suggested on May 2012. Myo was the result of
an attempt to connect human activity with the digital world. The Founders of Thalmic Labs
decided to utilize wearable tech the bridge between reality and cyberspace. The first
prototype of Myo was revealed on February 2013, and the Myo Alpha fascinated people all
over the world. In less than a month, there were over 25,000 pre-orders and the company
earned 3,725,000 USD of profit.

This is the video of the first prototype. It can be seen from the video that the Myo is
capable of sensing even the smallest of muscle movements. The co-founder in the video
shows that it is possible to play a first-person shooter using the Myo. It can also be used for
controlling iPads, PowerPoint presentations on PC, drones, RC helicopters and so on. Any
device with Bluetooth connection can be controlled through Myo.
Myo is gaining attention as a next-gen input device. It is by far the most accurate
product that can indicate human gestures, and there are endless possibilities of how the
technology could be integrated.

THE INFLUENCE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

ON MODERN LITERATURE
It seems like the world is overusing digital technology. People nowadays spend more
time with electronics than with books. Nevertheless, literature is ancient compared to modern
digital technology and was a friend of mankind for a long time. Literature can be defined as
writings in which expresses with ideas of interest, in a specific form or feature. We feel as if
it is impossible to survive in the modern world without digital tech. Regardless of whether
this digital reliance is for the better or worse of humanity, the fact that digital tech
revolutionized several manmade concepts from its roots is undeniable. According to a toll, 50
percent of all existing information was digital in the year 2002, and thus referred to as the
beginning of the digital age. By the year 2007, 94 percent of all information was digital and
now digital storage is considered to be one of the most natural methods in storing
information. Because literacy is also a type of information, digital technology must have had
its effects on modern literature. A common example of such influence is the rise of e-books,
literacy through a new digital medium. Then do these e-books or any other type of digital
literature really flourish the development of modern literature? Do they cause more harm than
good?
To start with, e-books, as I mentioned earlier, are one of the most significant outcome
of digital literature. E-books are mostly copies of books in reality transferred into digital
form. Some e-books are internet-exclusive, meaning that they are not for sale offline, mainly
because the works are too minor to publish. Surprisingly, the concept of e-books have
appeared as early as the 1930s, although modern e-books do not follow the early idea. The ebooks we all know was first made in the late 1940s. Since then, technology has improved and
so has the e-book industry. Undoubtedly there are benefits of e-books. One obvious
18 | P a g e

advantage is its eco-friendliness. Printing books cost an excessive amount of paper. There is
no need to hurt trees or spend budget on hurting them if a work of literature is published
digitally. Another edge of e-books over paper books is its mobility, compactness and
accessibility. Literature can be purchased anywhere, anytime and hundreds books can be
stored in a single digital storage. This allows e-books to be carried efficiently. These
advantages enabled the e-book business to flourish. The downsides of e-books, however,
damage the virtue and oath of literature itself. The biggest issue with e-books is the
copyrights of the works. In some cases, e-books invade the borders of copyright law. For
example, there was an incident where George Orwells Animal Farm was deleted from the
Amazon e-book database as well as the users personal libraries. This shows that not all
books are accepted by the law to be transferred into digital data, and the users cant have
much ownership over e-books compared to the physical copies of them. Another problem
with e-books is piracy. Any sort of digital product can be easily pirated, unlike physical
products. Piracy damages the value of the book and its pure function as literature.
Then did e-books advance literature in its original meaning? Or did they just mass
produce books and let literature lose its shine? As mentioned above, literature are writings
that express ideas in a creative form and feature. But literature has more meaning than just
that. You can tell from its definition that literature is written art. Art is a method of the author
communicating with the audience, seeking empathy or conveying a message. As long as the
written work sticks to its purpose as a way to express oneself, the medium doesnt matter. For
instance, a type of art that has completely evolved through digital technology is the music
industry. Throughout history, music has never been so common and diverse as it is now.
Contemporary music would not have been so successful if not for digital media. The same
would go for literature. In the digital age, it is undeniable that people are slowly departing
from books. People find electronics more enjoyable. E-books can help bring the joy of
reading back to modern humanity.

LITERARY ANALYSIS OF HOTEL IMPERIAL

Short Summary
The story is about a young Malaysian exchange student who is studying in London
for several years. The protagonist is uncomfortable with his current cultural, academic
situation and wishes to escape from such complicated matters during his trip across England.
He eventually takes some time thinking on his own, and decides to confront his problems in
the end. On his way to enlightenment, the protagonist goes through several conflicts with
place, people, and even time.

Protagonist versus London

The protagonist first mentions about the London streets and how unpleasant it makes
him feel. Remarks such as grim streets, too-cold air, and clouds of traffic depicts the
unfriendly nature of the urban city. In this situation, Room 72 of the Hotel Imperial acts as a
haven from such negative environments. Later in the story, some positive entities like
Christmas carolers and electric lights are mentioned as well. However, they contrast with the
dark, negative atmosphere of the hotel room.

Versus Friends
The protagonist is on a trip to escape from his troubles. Apparently the trip turned out
to be a disaster. Only three of his friends accompany him when they arrive at Hotel Imperial.
He then bumps upon an argument with his friends, and decides to stay in Room 72 while his
friends leave him behind to continue on with the trip.

21 | P a g e

Versus Hotel Imperial

Although it acts as a barrier that blocks out the cold London streets, the protagonist
does not make positive remarks about Hotel Imperial as well. He mentions the poor internet
connection, the awful scent of the walls. The old posters on the walls of Room 72 reminds the
protagonist of his grandfather, a man that greatly influenced both the protagonist and his
family. Later in the story, when the Christmas spirit of the London streets come to rise, the
protagonist feels as the room matches his gloom and the shadows creep in, emphasizing
the negativity.

Versus His Grandfather

A man full of adventure and excitement, the protagonists grandfather travelled the
world when he was a student. He encourages the protagonist to do so as well, mentioning his
experience in London and Hotel Imperial. This influences the protagonist to dream of
travelling the isles. He died not long ago. His death brings misery to the protagonist,
depriving him of the will to carry on with his trip.

Versus His Family

Old-fashioned, as the protagonist describes them. His family strongly believes in the
benefits of studying in a foreign land, especially in London, where the protagonists
grandfather always talked about. Unfortunately the protagonist is not doing so well in
London. His grades are poor and he is uncertain about his future and degree. Theyve sent
several postcards to him, but he did not reply to them for a long time. He tries to stay away
from them, and hides his current dilemmas. In the end, he finally writes a reply to their
postcards, his Christmas greetings.

Versus Self
He has always dreamt of travelling. So he did, to escape from all his troubles. He is
so close to his goal, of travelling the isles. But now he is exhausted with travelling and his
troubles continue to taunt him. Travelling wasnt new and exciting as his grandfather told
him. He slowly begins to fall apart, and eventually argues with his friends. The death of his
mentor has taken its toll on the protagonist. Now he has lost his reasons to travel. The only
man who he would consult about the differences of reality and what he told him is now gone.
The negativity inside him starts to grow, and he starts to think. The cold, dark, serene
atmosphere of Room 72 matches his gloom, then he feels as if his life has been leading up to
this quiet point. Ultimately, he chooses to refrain from running away and to fight his
demons. A first step in doing so, he sends his Christmas greetings to his family

Versus Past
England isnt the capital of the world. The glorious title remains in the past, and does
not continue on into the present. The same goes for the Hotel Imperial, what was once the
grandest hotel in London. The hotel is now old and powerless, ready to go out of business
any moment. All the stories the protagonists grandfather told to his family is now outdated
and inaccurate. The world has changed so much in a century or less. The whole conflict
throughout the story originates from this time difference. The London his family and
grandfather expected is so different from what the protagonist experiences in the present. No
more is England the best spot for advanced learning, and neither is Hotel Imperial the finest
of them all.
