THE WORLD OF OBJECTS

We take a sneak peek at an artist who creates sculpture

made entirely out of found and pre-loved objects We
talk inspiration, artmaking practice and future directions.
INTERVIEW BY CHS Creative Arts Department
ARTIST: Laura May Pulea

CHS: Tell us a bit about how you first started planning your
sculpture? Firstly, where did you find your object/s? Did you start
with a found object or did you already have a concept in mind?
Did you consider the function of the object in your planning or
did you just focus on how you can use the parts to create
something new?
ARTIST: My planning for my sculpture just came to me right on
the spot. I had my materials all set before me on my table but I
just didnt know what to do with them at all. At first, I did have a
concept in mind for my character but it was a little too elaborate
and I just wanted to start off simple. The functioning of my
character began with an old looking cup with holes in them with
bits and pieces of wood and to top it off a shiny Christmas
bauble. I considered the first though of my props with a shiny
golden bauble being the first start of my character and the rest
were just clueless objects with no meaning to them (at first). I
couldnt really see the function through all of this and the main
focus of my design was the unused junk set before me. The junk
were either all dirty or ruined from the lack of someone who
previously cut them for no apparent reason. Then the image of
my character came and I got straight to work once I had that
image inserted into my memory.
CHS: How did you disassemble and reassemble your found
objects to create your sculpture? Describe each step in detail,
including all materials and techniques used to create your found
object sculpture.
ARTIST: There were some conflicts in my design like whether the
wood chips would be arms or legs or whether they would just be
a part of some dress that was just formed with nothing to spare
other than just pieces of wood chips with a small and tiny looking
golden bauble head to finish with a flourish. The arms were a
hard part because I couldnt find anything that would go well with
the character itself. So, I started working with an idea that

CHS: What was the function for each of your objects before you
started altering them? Did this influence the concept of your
sculpture?
ARTIST: The functioning of my objects were just plain useless at
first, with only a result of a piece of nothing junk. The wood,
tissue paper, cup and bauble head were just like a broken clock
piece. But in the end, I managed. This really influenced my inner
imagination and the concept of my sculpture because the props
that I had in front of me slowly transformed itself to a sort of
angelic position. It was and it wasnt a character I had in mind
but it suited quite well in the end.
CHS: CHS:
