Introduction Essay
The purpose of this portfolio I want to demonstrate how much I have improved on my
english skills since I took 1S+1T English pathway. I also want to present to them that I have
applied my knowledge in these two classes throughout my other courses im taking, in daily life,
and how Ill apply them to my future plans.
I believe I have mastered evaluating my own reading and writing processes to identify
strengths and areas for improvement. In middle/high school I always saw flaws in my writing,
but I never could identify how I could improve it. In English 1S and 1T I learned how to evaluate
others work/have had others tell me how to improve my work which helped me learn how to do
that to my own work. I do seek for people to read my work in order to improve it, but I feel like
if I did not have that option I can do it efficiently. In most classes in college you do not have the
luxury of having activities such as peer workshop, so having mastered this skill will benefit me
in any other class I take throughout my academic career. This step has also really helped me with
achieve good scores on timed writings.
I have learned how to identify my relationship with texts/authors and your role within
larger academic discourse communities, but I feel like its something I can always improve on. In
previous classes I never truly thought about identifying my role within larger academic discourse
communities and I would rarely identify my relationship with texts/authors due to the fact
material that was covered in class was not presented in an interesting way, In the English 1S and
1T Pathway my professor managed to grab my attention towards certain topics like what is the
American dream? Before this course I probably would of given you a vague explanation that

would be insignificant, but this course made me think/connect in ways to the texts. Things such
as question stems have been useful tools to help me connect to the text. I realize now how
important it is to identify these two things because without including these subjects in your
writing assignments it wont make them personal. Adding personal connections to essays grabs
readers attentions.
Community/Global Consciousness and Responsibility is a step that I feel like I have
mastered not only in school but in my everyday life. I believe this is one of the most important
skills someone can have because social perceptiveness, including respect, empathy, cultural
awareness, and sensitivity, citizenship, ethics, interpersonal skills and personal integrity,
community service, self-esteem, interest in and pursuit of lifelong learning are all skills that
make up a well, brought up person. I believe these are things most people strive to be because
obtaining skills like these will make you likeable. In English 1S+1T we have discussed many
topics that are relevant to cultural awareness and social perceptiveness. Talking about these
topics in class has made me realize how passionate I am about people understanding things that
are going on in our society. In my everyday life I love to volunteer and help those in need. I
respect those around me and provide empathy when needed. Community/Global Consciousness
and Responsibility will truly help me in my career path. I aspire to become a Nurse Practitioner
and also serve in the Peace Corps in order to make the world a better place. I believe with the
right attitude I can benefit from this career path while making an impact on communities in
certain parts of the world.
Creative, Critical, and Analytical Thinking contains skills like Judgment and decision
making, intellectual curiosity, problem solving through analysis, synthesis and evaluation,
creativity, aesthetic awareness, research method, identifying and responding to a variety of
learning styles and strategies. All these skills contribute not only to my academic career, but also
to my personal life and work. In my personal life I use problem solving all the time to solve my

issues with my friends and family. Just the other day I was arguing with my friend about how we
dont spend enough time together and in order to solve the issue we first had to analyze it,
synthesize, and evaluate. At work I use a lot of judgement and decision making when it comes to
decisions with customers. When I began training at my work I identified and responded to a
variety of strategies styles. As a Nurse Practitioner I will have to use judgement and decision
making every time Im with patients,
All these skills are important to apply to my future, in order to develop and grow as an
individual. I will continue to apply these skills not only to be a good student throughout my
academic career, but to be a good human being. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to
learn and grow as a student/as an individual in English 1S and 1T.
