Week Three
Where is Yearbook going this year?
Class: Yearbook
Unit: Introduction to Yearbook
Teacher: Jill Genobaga

Objectives: Students will learn about the Yearbook as a storybook. They will learn more
about the art of telling a story through picture, text and photograph. Students will begin to
visualize what they want this years Yearbook to look like and the stories that they want to
tell.

Materials: Internet access, personal computers


Duration: 40 minutes
Anticipatory Set: Students will critique last years Yearbook. They will begin looking at the
overall feel of the book and how well the book tells a story.

Teaching: Teacher will emphasize what to look for in a Yearbook critique from the more
general (overall feel, tone) to the more specific (spelling/grammar errors, etc.).

Modeling/Checking for Understanding: Teacher will encourage discussion about the


Yearbook to get ideas flowing about what we want to do with our Yearbook this year.
Teacher will also emphasize the importance of the Yearbook in telling a story.

Questioning Strategies
Teacher will encourage discussion about telling stories.
Guided Practice:
Teacher will talk more about telling stories and illustrate by showing digital story about last
years Yearbook Reveal. Students will be encouraged to give feedback about the story that
was told and to comment on the elements that contributed to the story.
Closure:
Teacher will introduce the project for independent practice. Teacher will emphasize the
importance of all elements (music, photos, video, transitions, etc) supporting the story that
is being told.
Independent Practice/Assignment:
Create a digital story about some aspect of life at PHAA. Include photos that we have taken
for the yearbook last year (whether or not we actually used them in the Yearbook). You will
find them in our Yearbook Avenue Jostens website database. If you would like to take new
ones, you may. Use music, voiceovers and effects to make it exciting and compelling.
