Gender Bias Issues

Many gifted women may have
constraining experiences because of
gender, such as being seen as
threatening to some men - and other
women - in positions of authority.
Some may feel pain at being different
from "the way women are supposed to
be" and have a need to hide their
abilities to "fit in" with more "normal"
society.

Gender Bias Issues

Differential treatment is started at an
early age starting with parents.
Gifted women in the workplace they seem
to lose their sense of confidence and tend
to shy down from those higher positions.
Gifted women in school tend to face many
pressures in school which forces them to
shift their priorities which shys them
away from their real talents.

Barriers
for the Gifted Female
I was never called by my own name until my
husband died. As a young girl, I was always
Arthur's daughter. When I married, I was Charlie's
wife. When I had children, I was Sarah and
David's mother. It was only after my children
grew up and my husband died, that I was called
by my own name. I realized I had lost my sense of
self as a young girl, and only regained it as an
older woman. (Unknown, Reis 1998)

External Barriers

Lack of support from family

Stereotyping
Acculturation (home, school, society)
Finances

Internal Barriers

Self-doubt/low self-esteem (The Great Impostor Syndrome)

Self-criticism
Lowered expectations
Attributing success to effort rather than ability
Apathy (feelings of inferiority)
Acceptance
Conflict between cultural identity and school achievement
Fear of success
Poor planning
Not putting self first
Perfectionism
Loneliness/Betrayal
Physical Attractiveness
