INFLUENCES OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY

1. Government
Science and technology focusing on the development of innovative solutions to help government better provide public
services through science and technology. Through applied research and partnerships, projects are undertaken that
address the policy, management, and technology dimensions of information use in the public sector.
The influences of S&T on Government are;

Military defense create powerful weapons to defend its country (or by attacking other countries) by combating actual
or perceived threats

-High powered battled weapons

-Nuclear
-State of the art fighting plane like the f-18 fighting Falcon of USA
-Robotic soldiers to eliminate human troops
in battle fields
The influences of S&T on Government are;

• Health and Safety

Provide quality and affordable medicines for the Poor.

Develop vaccines
Provide quality health care assistance and training
Perform food licensing and food inspection
Ensure basic public health services
Update the public about health issues and threats

2. Education

The influence of science and technology on education are also called learning technology. Its objective is to give
ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using and managing appropriate
technological processes and resources.
It covers the processes and systems of learning and instruction, educational technology includes other systems used in
the process of developing human capability. Educational Technology includes, but is not limited to, software, hardware, as
well as Internet applications and activities.
Influences in Education:
- e-tv of abs-cbn
- Computer aided instructions (Commission on Higher Education)
- Science and technological innovations and
inventions
- Food and nutrition institute, DOST scholars
online
- Community, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute
- PAG-ASA and PHIVOLCS DOST
3. Religion

The influences of science and technology on religion are as follows;

- Pope John Paul II issued a letter informing the world

on the use of Internet entitled The internet: A new forum for proclaiming the Gospel”

influences of science and technology on religion are as follows;

Provides training, seminar and workshop on ICT

Pope Benidict XVI surfs the web and uses emails Facebook, Wikipedia and YouTube in the Vatican

- CBCP news Podcast – A daily 15 minutes live news and can be downloaded free of charge.

- CBCP promotes internet services packages for priest.

4. Family and community

People are divided in their beliefs of whether the overall effect of technology on society is good or bad.
Technology is constantly changing, and it is changing us as well. In the past, some of these changes have been difficult
to cope with.
In the future, these changes are going to be happening faster, with less time to prepare. Unless we are well informed of
the consequences, we will make the wrong choices, and our technology will destroy us.
The overall effect of technology is good; there are clearly dangers and drawbacks. Every new technology breeds
unanticipated or unwanted side effects.

o Industrial Revolution, while reducing manual labor in the long run, had and still has much
negative consequence, such as pollution, child labor, and sweatshop conditions.
o Lost of family bonding or family ties
o Man Vs Machines expressing concern about the dangers of artificial intelligence
Influence of Science and Technology on manual workforce

“BLUE COLLAR WORKERS

A blue-collar worker is a member of the working class who typically performs manual labor and earns an hourly wage.

Blue-collar workers are distinguished from those in the service sector and from white collar workers, whose jobs are not
considered manual labor.

Blue-collar work may be skilled or unskilled, and may involve in manufacturing, mining, building and construction trades,
mechanical work, maintenance, repair and operations maintenance or technical installations.

The white-collar worker, by contrast, performs non-manual labor often in an office; and the service industry worker
performs labor involving customer interaction, entertainment, retail and outside sales, and the like.

What are in influence of S & T that drastically affects the so called “blue collar workers”?
• TIME FACTOR – is the period of time that an individual spends at paid occupational labor.
• MODERN BUSINESS FIRM – refers to modern corporation or modern institutions that exercised an important
influence on the organizational context of work in industrial society due to technological change.
• UNIONS – a second important influence on the organizational context of work exercise by the industrial revolution
was the rise of the unions. It is an organization of workers who have banded together to achieve common goals in key
areas, such as working or physical conditions. This may include the negotiation of wages, work rules, complaint
procedures, rules governing hiring, firing and promotion of workers, benefits, workplace safety and policies. The
agreements negotiated by the union leaders are binding on the rank and file members and the employer and in some
cases on other non-member workers.
• WORK WEEK – The legal workweek is the number of days in a full 7 day week that are allocated for business
activities. In many countries it is Monday to Friday, though the workweek varies from nation to nation
• TECHNOLOGICAL UNEMPLOYMENT – Unemployment occurs when a person is available and willing to work but
currently without work.
• DESKILLING – it is the process by which skilled laborer (specifically the blue collar workers) within an industry or
economy is eliminated by the introduction of technologies operated by semiskilled or unskilled workers
• HEALTH AND SAFETY TRIVIA

• Because of growing threat concerning workers the Occupational Safety and Health Act OHSA was passed by the
congress in 1970.

• It is the basic right of the workers to be informed of what hazardous substances are present in the work place.

• JOB CONTENT AND PROCESS – it is a list of the general tasks, or functions, and responsibilities of a position.
Typically, it also includes to whom the position reports, specifications such as the qualifications needed by the person
in the job, salary range for the position, etc

• When the birth of S & T was recognized in modern business firm was there any changes in terms of job qualifications,
specifications or even salary range?
