Cleaning Pollutant Traps

DO NOT use equipment or undertake work procedure unless you


have been instructed in the correct and safe usage and
applicable procedures

WARNING
Entry to pollutant traps is prohibited
unless the worker holds a current
confined space entry ticket

(NATIONAL UNIFORM LEGISLATION) ACT 2011

PROCEDURE
OBJECTIVES

To ensure the safety of workers engaged in the cleaning and


maintenance of storm water pollutant traps.

- Petroleum, chemicals and other

- Vermin
- Feral / wild animals /crocodiles
- Contaminated air
- Human / animal waste

Pre Operational Safety Checks


- No worker is to enter pollutant traps unless they have a
current confined space entry ticket
- No worker is to enter pollutant traps unless a trained
spotter is on duty spotter must also have current
confined space entry ticket
- Ensure vehicles are fitted with appropriate sharps disposal containers
and sharps pick up implements
- Conduct visual site inspection to check for animals, vermin, crocodiles
- If doubt exists as to safety of the site then prepare a JSA
- Ensure designated PPE is worn before commencing any work
- Ensure harnesses, slings and ropes are in working order and not
frayed
Post Operational Safety Checks
- Thoroughly clean all exposed skin
- Clean all clothing
- Check that harnesses and slings have not been damaged if damage
is present, tag out equipment and replace

PROCEDURES

Working Procedures
- Make the general work area safe by setting up exclusion and warning
signs and barrier webbing
- Unhook cables that hold the trap covers in place
- Undo ropes
- Hitch up to crane truck and lift cover with crane truck
- Use shovels to contents of the trap into buckets and hoist out and
place into truck
- Replace cover
- Make sure site is safe and remove webbing and signs
