MALE REPRODUCTIVE

SYSTEM
Function of Reproductive System
• Produce and maintain sperm
• Transport sperm to female
• Secrete male sex hormone
• Organs:
– Gonads (testes)
• Produce sperm, hormones
– All others structures are accessory sex organs
Cryptorchidism
• Incidence: Because the testis descends into the
scrotum during the last month of pregnancy,
many premature boys are delivered before the
descent process is completed. Cryptorchidism
occurs in about 3% of full term boys and 30% of
boys born at 30 weeks of gestational age. Most
undescended testes will spontaneously descend
within the first six months of life.

B. Epididymis
D. Vas Deferens
Anatomy of Testis
SeminiferousTubules
• Specialized stratified epithelium
• Spermatogenic cells
• Sustentacular cells (Sertoli)
– Inside tubule
– Nourish, regulate spermatogenic cells
• Interstitial cells (Leydig)
– Between seminiferous tubules
– Produce androgens

Internal Accessory Organs
• Epididymis
• Vasa deferentia
• Ejaculatory ducts
• Seminal vesicles
• Prostrate gland
• Bulbourethral gland
GLANDS
• Seminal vesicle
– Alkaline secretion, fructose for sperm, volume
to ejaculate
• Prostate gland
– Alkaline secretion, enhances motility of sperm
– Secretes into urethra
• Bulbourethral glands
– Mucuslike fluid that lubricates
