Unit Title: Fractions & Proportions

Name: Jacob Castaneda
Content Area: Mathematics
Grade Level: 7th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.B.4
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct
simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.NS.A.2
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to
multiply and divide rational numbers.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.EE.A.2
Understand that rewriting an expression in different forms in a problem context can shed light
on the problem and how the quantities in it are related. For example, a + 0.05a = 1.05a
means that "increase by 5%" is the same as "multiply by 1.05."

Unit Summary:
Fractions and Proportions are sections of math that a large number of students have difficulty
with. We use and see fractions and proportions on a daily basis. In this unit we will explore
fractions and proportions through real life examples and scenarios. Students will be able to
strengthen their skills by making real life connections. The unit will start with a brief review on
fractions then get in to proportions. Students will demonstrate competency of material by
completing a small project. The unit will end with a slide based presentation or short video of
the students illustrating their knowledge of fractions and proportions.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
A class discussion on fractions
and proportions will reveal
how much prior knowledge
the students have.

Lesson Activities:
A discussion of how fractions and
proportions present themselves in
everyday life. This followed by a
quick YouTube video, one about
fractions and one about proportions.
We will then do a class example of
fractions and proportions
(boys/girls/whole class). After we will
resume with the lecture and go over
more examples. The last two slides of
the presentation are problems for the
students to do on their own to show
that they have a grasp of the
material.
