Assignment 1: Information Literacy

Technology Transformed

Technology, during the course of mankind, has momentously enhanced the

quality of life and safety in the elderly and those persons with disabilities. By
unifying diverse technologies concurrently, corresponding with those of mobile and
assistive aspects, students such as Beth Hadley and her team took matters a step
further and devised an application that will revolutionize the nurse call system in
their local assistant living home. This will ultimately allow clients, both resident and
nurses, to communicate virtually anywhere for requests fluctuating from a glass of
water, commencing a video chat along with text messaging, to a real life
emergency corresponding with a slip and fall. Residents, who have limited
capabilities due to age or disabilities, will now have the opportunity to expand their
communications with nurses through modern technology that has already improved
their extremely innovative home. What started off as a senior project for students at
MIT, quickly turned into an IPad application that will enable residents to gain access
to assistance from anywhere and give them a piece of mind wherever they may be
to make their needs known.

TRAAP
Assistive technology and learning disabilities: Today's realities and
tomorrow's promises

1. TIME
a. It was written in January of 1998 and I havent found an
update as of yet. Only found a few articles that used this
article as a reference for their articles or journals
2. Relevance
a. It relates to my topic of assistive technology by giving me
multiple examples of assistive technology in almost
everything we do and use today
3. Authority
a. Yes this information is trustworthy to me due to the fact that
it I found it off of a .gov site. The author, Rena B. Lewis, has
a Ph.D. majoring in special education and minored in
psychology and was honored with an award by the
International Reading Association.
4. Accurate
a. I would say that this information in the article is accurate
based on the state of the world in 1998. Within the article,
she cites several references to other journals or articles that
support her topic.
5. Purpose
a. I gather from the article that this article was written to inform
the public about the adaptive technology that is steadily
increasing to help and assist those who appear to be outside
of the normal.
