Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation

Assignment 1
1. Two resistors, R1 and R2 are connected in series. Individual resistance measurements, using a digital
multimeter, give R1= 18.7 and R2 = 3.624. Calculate the total resistance in appropriate significant
digits. If a current of 3.18 A is passed through the circuit, calculate the voltage drop (upto three
significant digit).
2. Add 6283 and 8214 and express the range of doubt in the answer as a percentage.
3. A voltmeter, having a sensitivity of 1000 /V, reads 100 V on its 150 V scale when connected across
an unknown resistor in series with a miliammter. When the miliammeter reads 5 mA, calculate (a) the
apparent resistance of the unknown resistor; (b) the actual resistance of unknown resistor; (c) the
error due to the loading effect of voltmeter.
4. A voltmeter reading 70V on its 100V range and an ammeter reading 80mA on its 150 mA range, are
used to determine the power dissipated in a resistor. Both these instruments are guaranteed to be
accurate within 2% at full scale deflection. Determine the limiting error of the power.
5. A moving coil instrument has the following data
Number of turns = 100
Width of the coil = 20 mm
Depth of the coil = 30 mm
Flux dencity in the gap = 0.1 Wb/m2
Calculate the deflecting torque when carrying a current of 10 mA. Also calculate the deflection, if the
control spring constant is 210-6 Nm/degree
