Earned media is difficult and time consuming. Its one of

the reasons that some PR firms have decided to walk
away from providing services in this area. It requires a
complete understanding of an institutions brand
positions and strategy along with strong news judgment
to connect the two. Our media planner presents news
stories and anniversaries along with ideas that members
of the national and local media might find of interest.
Our media planner also includes hashtags and social
handles that may be prudent.
May is full of events and anniversaries that are sure to
impact the news cycle. May 1 represents the fifth
anniversary of the failed car bomb in Times Square and
the fourth anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.
Mid month is National Police Week, which was created
back in the 60s by President John F. Kennedy. For many
police forces it has been a tumultuous year. We believe
this week provides an opportunity for op-ed pieces on
how forces can work on reconciliation with their
communities. Also, mid month well learn about the AAA
travel forecast in advance of the official start to summer,
Memorial Day. The world will watch the top three-year
olds in horse racing in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness
Stakes, say farewell to David Letterman, and hear about
predictions from NOAA on the Atlantic hurricane season.
We hope that youll enjoy this monthly guide. Please
dont hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks again for subscribing.
Best,

4th anniversary of the death of Osama bin

Laden
al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed on this date four years ago by U.S. Navy SEALs in his
compound in Abbottabad. Bin Laden had taken responsibility for several terror attacks, including
the attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City on Sept. 11 that killed 2,996 Americans. In
an effort to prevent his grave site from becoming a shrine to his followers, the U.S. military buried
his body at sea.
Earned Media Ideas:
Has bin Ladens death fueled the uptick in recruitment for groups like ISIS or Boko Haram?
Following the raid, many questioned what this might mean for U.S./Pakistani relations given that bin Laden
had been hiding in the country for some time. What is the status of relations between the two countries four
years later? Did this have any long-term effect? Why or why not?
Some critics said President Obama was weak on foreign policy. That has certainly waned over the past
four years as many believe ISIS, Ukraine and others present substantial obstacles for Obamas foreign
policy legacy. How long does a specific action give you credibility? How does the public determine
What have you done for me lately?
How has al-Qaeda changed since bin Ladens death? Has it gotten more or less threatening?
How did bin Ladens death actually affect the War on Terror?
Can ISIS be considered the new al-Qaeda? In what ways are they similar? In what ways are they different?
Why was it necessary to prevent the photos from becoming propaganda and his burial site from becoming
a shrine? What does this say about the nature of radical extremism and its spread? What does it say about
the role of martyrs in the propagation of movements and ideas in general?
What did the U.S. learn from its experience with bin Laden and al-Qaeda that may aid in future conflicts?
What lessons didnt we learn that, in hindsight, should have been obvious?
How does this anniversary spark further attempts by ISIS and other radical Islamic groups to lure recruits
from the Europe and North America?
Do we feel any safer now that bin Laden is dead?
What is the global strategy to confront radical Islam now that thousands of European fighters have crossed
into Syria and other parts of North Africa to fight for the ISIS and Boko Harem death cults?

Earned Media Ideas (continued):
How has President Obamas refusal to call the terrorists radicals hurt the worlds perception of America as
a leader of freedom?
Are we now experiencing a second crusade against those practicing Islam? Will the world be
plunged into a long, twisted religious war likes those fought during the Middle Ages?

5th anniversary of a failed car bomb attack in

Times Square
Times Square was evacuated following the report of smoke coming out of a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder.
The SUV was full of propane cylinders, petrol and a clock timing device. Although the bomb was
ignited, it failed to explode and was eventually dismantled without further incident. In June 2005,
Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-born resident of Connecticut, was indicted for conspiracy to use a weapon
of mass destruction and attempting an act of terrorism. He plead guilty and was sentenced on Oct. 5,
2010 to life in prison.
Earned Media Ideas:
Why dont we remember the near misses? When authorities are able to respond to and thwart an attack
before it can happen, should we do a better job to hold it up as a job well done? Why do only events with
body counts stick in our memories?
We have not heard about our terror level being raised in a while. Is this a false sense of security?
How has the face of domestic terrorism changed? How has our response to it changed?
Are there ways that law enforcement could prevent events like this from happening? Should officials have
been watching Shahzad and other domestic terrorists? What does this say about the intersection of privacy
and national security?
How does press coverage of attacks like this influence public opinion of terrorism? Of U.S. involvement in
the Middle East? Of Islam as a whole? What is the role of the media, both in forming the public narrative of
events and in influencing the way events unfold?
How prolific are the so-called lone wolves that seem to spark many of these domestic terror attacks?
What technology is now available to protect cities from portable dirty bombs or small nuclear weapons?
How has the debate over the militarization of our domestic police forces hindered the U.S. ability to prepare
for domestic terrorist attacks on malls and other important infrastructure?
Can Americas open society even dream of being protected from todays radical terrorists? And how much
privacy will we lose in doing so?
How safe is our energy grid, ports, public transportation and railway system?
Following the terrorism acts of 9/11, deradicalization courses became popular. What are the challenges of
these types of programs? Are they effective? What is it like for someone to go through deradicalization?
What is attracting young men and women to Syria? What is piquing their interests?

The Congressional Club holds its annual First

Ladys Luncheon
The Congressional Club held a breakfast in 1912 to honor the First Lady of the United States. The
breakfast has since come to be called the First Ladys Luncheon, and this year Michelle Obama will
attend, as have past First Ladies.
Earned Media Ideas:
The clubs original purpose was to provide a non-partisan setting for friendships among the spouses of
members of the House and Senate according to its website, which also states that this purpose holds true
today. Does this luncheon have more political significance than just fostering friendship? What is the larger
political significance of this event?
The Congressional Club is for the spouses of House and Senate members, which once consisted only of
women. How have husbands of congress and senate members adapted to membership in the club? How
has the club adapted to them?
The luncheon has become a lavish event, with famous performances and exquisite attire. How has the
luncheon developed over the years? What did it look like when it first started?
The luncheon always features a gift bag for attendees. In the past, it has included signature perfumes
made for the event. What does inclusion in the bag do for the companies who make the products?
What does security look like at this event? How has it changed since the original luncheon?
How has the role of the First Lady changed and developed over the past two decades?
Will the executive branch and the legislative branch of government ever learn how to be diplomatic again?
How has a diverse first family changed the perception and role of the First Lady at the White House?
As the saying goes, Behind every great man is a great woman. How important is the role of First Lady in
the political arena? Would a presidential candidate even be considered if he were a bachelor?
During her time in the White House, Jacqueline Kennedy was known for her sense of style and interior
design. Michelle Obama is known for her role in increasing health awareness. What did other First Ladies
bring to their terms?

2nd anniversary of three women escaping from

Ohio home after 10 years captivity
Three women - Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight - were kidnapped and held captive
for 10 years by Ariel Castro in his Cleveland, Ohio home. Castro pleaded guilty in July 2013 to 977
criminal counts, including murder (for several forced miscarriages for Amanda) and kidnapping and
was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years. He hanged himself in his cell a month after sentencing.
Earned Media Ideas:
How do victims recover from such a traumatic experience? After spending 10 years captive, is there hope
of living a normal life?
How are the women coping with life after this ordeal? What lasting psychological effects does this event
have on them, and how are they overcoming it?
Neighbors played a role in rescuing these women, but 10 years passed before they became aware of the
captive women and helped. What does this say about modern American communities and the extent to
which neighbors are isolated from one another?
How does this kidnapping differ from other similar kidnapping cases, such as Jaycee Lee Dugard, and
what do they have in common? What patterns emerge, and what can psychologists learn from them?
Of all the kidnappings that occur every year, how many victims are actually found? Are methods for finding
kidnapped children improving?
An AMBER Alert was not issued when Gina DeJesus was kidnapped because no one saw her being
abducted. Might an AMBER Alert have helped DeJesus and the other girls? Why do the qualifications for
an alert exist as they do, and do they need to be changed?
Why has the global sex trade continued to grow?
Charles Ramsey, a neighbor, helped Amanda Berry escape when she was unable to open the door on her
own. Afterward, Charles was interviewed by local media and became popular for his recount of what
happened. Charles experienced his 15 minutes of fame. What other people have experienced fame in
this manner? How does it affect them psychologically?
Following Charles Ramseys interview in which he mentioned McDonalds, the company jumped at the
chance to respond and profit from the unlikely mention. A marketing expert to comment on the ethics of
companies inserting themselves into these sensational stories/tragedies.
Although Castro kidnapped and kept these women for himself, the incident brings to light the larger
issue of sex trafficking. Is sex trafficking on the rise in the U.S.? How about globally? What are some of
the issues surrounding the recent proposed sex trafficking bill?

National Day of Prayer

Established in 1952 by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, National
Day of Prayer invites all Americans to celebrate their constitutional rights to freedom of speech and
freedom of religion, in accordance with their own faith and beliefs. This years theme and verse is,

Earned Media Ideas:
Why did we establish a National Day of Prayer? Specifically, why did that come in 1952? What significance
did it bring back then?
In a culture that is very fast-paced, is it important to have a day dedicated to prayer and reflection? How
has it changed over the years?
What is the history of the National Day of Prayer, and has it met with opposition in the past? Should it? Why
or why not?
How does prayer, or taking part in group prayer, affect the brain?
What does it mean that the president signs a proclamation calling Americans to prayer in terms of political
significance? What would it mean for a president to forgo the tradition?
National days of prayer date back to colonial times. How has public perception of the day changed over
the years?

Rock in Rio USA music festival opens in Las Vegas

The first Rock in Rio USA music festival begins today at the City of Rock - a venue built specifically
for this festival - in the Las Vegas strip. The event is a spin-off of the original Rock in Rio music
festival, held in Rio de Janeiro and several other countries. It will have a similar structure and format
to its Brazilian counterpart, with organizers planning to host at least 120 acts for its inaugural edition.
Performers include Metallica, Linkin Park, Taylor Swift, No Doubt, John Legend, Deftones, Bruno
Mars, Ed Sheeran and Joss Stone.
Earned Media Ideas:
How much money do these festivals make? How much do they cost to produce? Where does the majority of
profit come from, both for the festival and for the city that hosts it, and what does it do for the economies of
these cities?
The festival is associated with iHeartRadio, an Internet radio platform that, unlike Internet radios like
Pandora or Spotify, both recommends songs and plays content from broadcast radio stations. Is this the
future of broadcast radio?
On iHeartRadio, users can like or dislike songs and thereby affect how often theyre played. How does this
differ from the traditional format of choosing songs, and is it a good thing or a bad thing for the music
industry? How so? Does user preference factor into festivals like this and which artists they invite to
participate?
How do festivals manage crowds? Are there safety concerns, and how are they addressed?
How has new technology influenced the way festivals function, in terms of the actual performances, the way
attendees pay for things, and the way security is managed, for example?
Is Vegas still the hot spot of entertainment? Why did the organizer choose Vegas for the U.S. inaugural
debut?
