with the same title based on Vermeers painting blending fiction, his life and
other historical facts. This kind of literary work, in which a work of art or
the figure of an artist painter, sculptor, musician, it does not matter is
the backbone element2 (OLIVEIRA, 1993, p. 40) of the novel, is known
as Knstlerroman. The Knstlerroman or the novel of the artist, from the
German Knstler meaning artist and Roman meaning novel, was
developed in Germany in the 19th century and became a mode of literary
representation of the artist. According to Linda Hutcheon, this literary
tradition came out of the Bildungsroman3 [...] with its preoccupation with
the growth of the artist (HUTCHEON, 1984, p. 12), in which the internal
creative experience is filtered through the character or the narrator.
Solange Oliveira explains that the Knstlerroman is a narrative in which
aesthetic and technical aspects are part of the plot, and the creative artistic
solutions affect other aspects of the artists life. Moreover, she defines as
Knstlerroman any kind of narrative in which the figure of the artist or a
piece of artwork, real or fictitious, plays an essential structural role, also
encompassing literary works which pursue a stylistic equivalent based on
the other arts4 (OLIVEIRA, 1993, p. 05). Oliveira calls attention to how
helpful it is to delve into the relationship between literature and the other
arts in Horaces ut pictura poesis tradition (OLIVEIRA, 1993, p. 05-06), so
that literary criticism can be enriched by borrowing semiotic elements from
the different art forms. We shall see Knstlerroman qualities in the study of
the protagonist of Girl with a Pearl Earring, who is not the master Vermeer,
but his assistant and muse, the maid Griet. The novel is told in the first
person by Griet who as narrator both plays the role of the author of the
narrative and functions as Vermeers collaborator.
In the painting there are only two characters, the model and the
painter. There is no historical account of this specific model as it happens
with the models of several other oil paintings, but only speculations about
who she could have been.
Chevalier, chooses to create a fictional character, Griet, a Dutch
Protestant teenager who becomes a maid in the house of the painter Johannes
Vermeer. Her calm and perceptive manner not only helps her in her
household duties, but also attracts the painters attention. Though different
in upbringing, education and social standing, they have a similar way of
looking at things.
The two main characters first meet at Griets house while she is
preparing some salad. Her awareness of color in doing such an ordinary

task attracts the painters attention. The painter and his wife, Catharina, need
a maid to clean the masters studio. Griet needs a job because her father, a
tile artisan, has just lost his sight in a work accident and cannot support his
family anymore. The Vermeers are there to settle the final details of her
hiring. After Griet starts working in their house, Vermeer slowly draws her
into the world of his paintings: the still, luminous images of solitary women
in domestic settings. A bond between maid and master is formed as she
becomes responsible for cleaning his studio a place so private that not
even his wife is allowed to enter. On the verge of womanhood, Griet also
contends with the attentions both from the butchers son, Pieter, and from
Vermeers patron, van Ruijven. She has to find her way through this new
and strange life outside the loving Protestant family she grew up in, now
fragmented by accident and death, as her father becomes blind as mentioned
above, her sister dies of the plague and her brother moves to another town
to find work.
The growing intimacy between master and maid creates disruption
and jealousy. At first, Griet describes the artworks to her father, who has
always been a great admirer of the masters work, when visiting her family
over the weekends. Griet leaves her maid status behind when elevated to
masters assistant by helping him with the preparation of the colors by
mixing pigments and they start discussing his art pieces as he finishes a
painting and starts a new one. Van Ruijven gets interested in Griet since the
very first time he sees her. He is determined to have the wide-eyed maid, as
he likes to call her. Besides van Ruijven, no one else agrees with Griets
modeling, because of rumors involving the maid who last did so for the
painting The Girl with a Wine Glass and became pregnant even before the
painting was finished. Van Ruijvens obsession leads to the climax of the
story when Griet becomes Vermeers muse, culminating in her sitting for
the portrait Girl with a Pearl Earring. The novel can be considered a
Knstlerroman because the core of its narrative is built on Vermeers real life
and the story of the mysterious girl he painted. The literary work is enriched
by borrowing elements from painting shown by ekphrastic descriptions
through Griets reading of Vermeers work.
Chevalier makes vast use of descriptions of Vermeers paintings in
the narrative of the novel Girl with a Pearl Earring, which is named after the
portrait. Griet, the female protagonist, lays out the core of the story through
a series of descriptions. This ancient descriptive device, which became
rather popular during the Romantic Movement in the nineteenth century, is

known as ekphrasis. The term is used to define verbal descriptions of nonverbal signs, frequently in form of poetry. Concerning the universe of
intermediality, Irina Rajewsky (2005) claims that ekphrasis is an intermedial
phenomenon within the larger category intermedial references (p. 52).
James Heffernan (1991) proposed the definition: verbal
representation of graphic representation (p. 299). However, this definition
emphatically excluded as objects of ekphrastic representation all nonrepresentational paintings and sculptures and all architecture (CLVER,
1998, p. 13). Claus Clver, therefore, proposes to define ekphrasis as the
verbal representation of a real or fictitious text composed in a non-verbal
sign system (1997, p. 26) which, according to him, is a broader, yet less
elegant, definition. In a later article (2007), he defines ekphrasis as verbal
representations of texts composed in non-verbal sign systems in order to
broaden the forms of representations to media other than painting and
sculpture (p. 23-25). Clvers proposal, therefore, opens the door to the
study of ekphrasis within different semiotic systems.
For Tamar Yacobi (1995), ekphrasis, the literary evocation of spatial
art, is an umbrella term that subsumes various forms of rendering the
visual object into words (p. 600). Although her view limits ekphrasis to
literary texts and visual arts, Yacobi develops a helpful chart showing
ekphrastic relations between visual sources, which she calls a representation
of artworks, and its verbal targets, which she calls the artworks representation in literature. The former is one-to-one, from a visual source to
a verbal target, i.e., the traditional ekphrastic relation, with one artwork
inspiring one verbal text typically in the form of poetry. The latter is from
one to many; it takes place when one image is the source of many verbal
texts, such as the dozen poems inspired by Breughels Icarus. This relationship
is usually considered the limit of ekphrasis. Its reverse is the many-to-one
relation a kind of cumulative text that covers a group of works
produced by some artist, often as an act of homage. The last one, the
many-to-many relation takes place when a writer, a school, or an age
revisits a certain image common to various paintings (p. 602-03). I should
also mention the pregnant moment. It is the moment right before the
climax of the novel which stimulates the readers imagination in a two-way
interart movement between source artwork and verbal target (p. 612).
Another contribution is from the French theoretician Liliane Louvel.
She proposes seven levels of pictorial saturation culminating in ekphrasis
(LOUVEL, 2001, p. 175-89). In two of her articles, Peindre les nuages pour
Scripta Uniandrade, v. 9, n. 2, jul.-dez. 2011

evoquer la lune and Seeing Dutch, Louvel uses ekphrastic excerpts from the
novel Girl with a Pearl Earring to illustrate how literature has been borrowing
elements from different semiotic systems. Louvels levels of pictorial
saturation are the following:
1. Tableau Effect: produced by the most diluted memory, herefore the
most subjective of the levels, in which a suggestive effect is so strong
that the painting seems to be haunting the text5 (LOUVEL, 2001, p.
177).
2. Picturesque View:6 The scene is detailed, the background and the form
are distinguished; the repertoire of shapes, colors and dimensions turn
the scene into a tableau.
3. Hypotypose: Descriptive narrative, direct reference to the painting. It is up
to the reader to make, or not, the association.
4. Tableaux vivants: The characters reproduce a painting or a historical scene
presented by the narrator.
5. Aesthetic or Artistic Arrangement:7 Composition which leads the character
to contemplation, such as a still-life; there is no direct reference to a
specific painting. This arrangement favors the reflexive effect.
6. Pictorial Description:8 The text frames the description of a painting9
(LOUVEL, 2006, p. 204). The narrators linguistic competence is tested,
as it highlights his ability to paint with words (LOUVEL, 2006, p. 20203). A description is like an expansion of the narrative. It justifies the
characters gaze by leading the readers through his eyes (HAMON. n.d.,
p. 58). A pictorial description takes place when the text dreams with
the image10 (LOUVEL, 2006, p. 217).
7. Ekphrasis: The highest level of pictorial saturation. . . . It is a high level
literary exercise in which a work of art evolves from the visible to the
readable11 (LOUVEL, 2001, p. 184).
I chose to divide the novels ekphrastic moments into three different
categories of description in order to optimize my analysis. These categories
are in accordance with recurrent patterns I identified among the ways the
characters describe the paintings. I call the first category Post-work
Descriptions, they refer to existing artworks being described by one of the
characters. The female protagonist, Griet, describes some works to her
blind father, a great admirer of the master. I chose to use two examples
15
here: one of them is the description of the painting A View of Delft, the
other is The Girl with a Wine Glass.
The first ekphrastic moment, the painting A View of Delft (see Fig.
1) is described at the very beginning of the novel when Griet and her father
are talking about her new job in which she will be in charge of cleaning
Vermeers studio. The father is telling her who Vermeer is by recalling one
of his famous paintings they had seen together:
It was a view of Delft, from the Rotterdam and Schiedam Gates.
With the sky that took up so much of the painting, and sunlight on
some of the buildings.
And the paint had sand in it to make the brickwork and the roofs
look rough, [Griet] added. And there were long shadows in the
water, and tiny people on the shore nearest us.
Thats the one. Fathers sockets widened as if he still had eyes
and was looking at the painting again. (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 7-8)

The second ekphrastic description, the painting The Girl with a Wine Glass
(see Fig. 2), is described by several characters. The most relevant description
is given by Pieter, the butchers son. Pieter makes the rumors about the
maid clear to Griet while verbally describing the scene:
It was several years ago now. It seems van Ruijven wanted one of his
kitchen maids to sit for a painting with him. They dressed her in one of his
wifes gowns, a red one, and van Ruijven made sure there was wine in the
painting so he could get her to drink every time they sat together. Sure
enough, before the painting was finished she was carrying van Ruijvens
child. (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 126)
Fig. 2 Johannes Vermeer, The Girl with the Wine Glass Dame en twee heren (Delft,
1659-60), oil painting, 30 x 26 3/8 in. Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick.
17
The most relevant illustration, that plays a great role on the central
plot, is a brief dialogue during a dinner party between van Ruijven and
Maria Thins on Vermeers next commission. Van Ruijven notices the wideeyed maid, as he likes to call Griet, while she is serving them. Maria Thins
recalls how pleased he was with the painting The Music Lesson (see Fig. 3)
and suggests another with a musical setting. After a lesson, a concert, perhaps
with more people in it, three or four musicians, an audience (CHEVALIER,
1999, p. 154). Van Ruijven is against an audience but likes the idea and
shows his interest in being in the painting with Griet. Maria Thins agrees at
first and even compares it to The Girl with a Wine Glass. After all, she is
aware of how interested the patron is in Griet and how much money he
could be willing to spend on her. However, later on Maria Thins agrees
with Vermeer that Griet should not be in the group scene, because she
wants to avoid problems with her daughter, Catharina Bolnes, who is
pregnant and could not bear the idea of the maid modeling for her husband.
Van Ruijven insists that he wants his wide-eyed maid even if it cannot be in
flesh but rather on a piece of canvas for him to admire her beauty. They all
agree to keep it a secret in order to protect Catharina from her self-destructive
jealousy. Van Ruijven, his wife and daughter end up sitting together in the
group scene: the painting The Concert (see Fig. 4). The final result of the
commission negotiation is the portrait Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Griet also describes the setting for the painting when she finds
herself in the picture scene before modeling for Vermeer. She actually
describes the painting The Procuress by Dirck van Baburen (see Fig. 5):
As I waited I studied the paintings he had hung on the back wall that
would form part of the concert painting. There was a landscape on the left,
and on the right a picture of three people a woman playing a lute, wearing
a dress that revealed much of her bosom, a gentleman with his arm around
her, and an old woman. (168-69)

The excerpt starts from van Ruijvens obsession with Griet expressed
in the description of The Girl with a Wine Glass. During the negotiation of
Vermeers next commission, The Concert, it is agreed that Griet will be
portrayed alone, and not beside van Ruijven, in order to avoid pregnant
Catharinas jealousy. Griet, though relieved and excited, is aware of the
drawbacks her proximity to Vermeer might bring her.
According to the novel, they start the project on the first day of the
year. Vermeer had already laid the first coat of paint on the canvas, no
reddish marks, false colors, or even the luminous spots as usual. The
canvas is an empty yellowish white (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 177). Vermeer
asks Griet to read a letter. She considers telling him that the paper is blank,
but chooses to stay quiet. He suggests a book, but concludes that the problem
is in her clothes. She suggests that he paint her as a maid but he refuses:
What do you want, sir? I asked, sitting. I was puzzled we never sat
together. I shivered, although I was not cold.
Dont talk. He opened a shutter so that the light fell directly on my face.
Look out of the window. He sat down in his chair by the easel.
I gazed at the New Church tower and swallowed. I could feel my jaw
tightening and my eyes widening.
Now look at me. (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 168-69)
Griet turns her head over her shoulder to face the painter. He asks
her to sit still. She realizes that she is actually being painted by Vermeer.
Only a month later did they continue the modeling. After much negotiation
over the composition of the painting, the master states that he will paint
[her] as [he] first saw [her], Griet. Just [her] (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 179-80).
The painter and the model negotiate the composition of the portrait:
the clothes, the blue and yellow turban instead of the traditional maids cap,
the body turned towards the window, the gaze of her wide open eyes, the
glossy lips, and, finally, the pearl earring. The painter worries in particular
about the way the light is reflected on the models face. Griet, the fictional
model, was highly aware of it the whole time; she knows that what really
matters to him is the final result as requested by his patron. The girl is
important only as his muse and not as a woman. While she does not fight
her feelings towards the painter, Griet follows the natural course of her life
outside of the studio, as evidenced in the excerpt below:
21
Griet only agrees to pierce her ears after Vermeer shows her the
work in progress. She continues the description:
The painting was like none of his others. It was just of me, of my head and
shoulders, with no tables or curtains, no windows or powder-brushes to
soften and distract. He had painted me with my eyes wide, the light falling
across my face but the left side of me in shadow. I was wearing blue and
yellow and brown. The cloth wound round my head made me look not like
myself, but like Griet from another town, even from another country
altogether. The background was black, making me appear very much alone,
although I was clearly looking at someone. I seemed to be waiting for
something I did not think would ever happen.
He was right the painting might satisfy van Ruijven, but something was
missing from it. (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 191)
One afternoon while Catharina is out, Maria Thins lends the pair
of earrings to Griet and asks her help to have the painting finished as soon
as possible. Vermeer includes the earring in the portrait. Griet asks him to
place the jewel in her ears. Griet leaves the studio, without even taking a last
look at the canvas, and proudly returns the earrings to her mistress. After
all, she had accomplished the task.

brother Frans at his new job (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 68). The change in
her personality leads her to lying. Eventually she acknowledges how she
began to get used to lying (CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 107) in order to
avoid enemies and avoid talking about the closeness between her and her
master. Griet stands up for herself whenever necessary, e.g., when she makes
it clear to Maria Thins that she does not wish to sit with van Ruijven
(CHEVALIER, 1999, p. 157). Finally, when she leaves the house after
Catharina sees the finished portrait, she is very aware of all the choices she
had made so far and all the possibilities that lay ahead of her.
In short, the female writer gives voice to the silent women in
Vermeers work. Chevalier brings a fictional female character, Griet, from
the margins to the center of the narrative making her the voice that tells the
story, blending fiction and historical facts in a different type of Knstlerroman,
since the main character is the fictional muse instead of the real-life artist.

de linguagem de Grande serto: Veredas e dos contos do escritor mineiro;
Permite verificar a permanncia,

o relgio do tempo
43
Ar parado,
lagos vidrados,
e vasos,
muitos vasos,
vasos vazios...
Os ancios perpassam
intrminos terraos,
com olhos tranqilos, olhos gelados,
de tanto olharem o sol.
E as mos tateiam calmas,
como se os dedos mergulhassem
a translucidez de uma gua,
esculpindo
invisveis e impossveis formas novas...

Introduo
H vrios sculos, diz ela, poemas, romances, peras, pinturas, msicas,
almeja a repetio e a mudana.
Seger (2007) demonstra estaticamente o fato,
mencionando, ainda, as premiaes do Emmy, filmes e minissries realizados
para televiso. Segundo ela
85% dos premiados pelo Oscar na categoria melhor filme so adaptaes;
70% dos ganhadores do Emmy vm desses filmes;

questionvel (p. 321).
As crticas, no entanto, no desmerecem a qualidade cinematogrfica
Caractersticas pessoais e psicolgicas do indivduo
no so necessariamente condicionadas por aspectos sociais ou histricos
(BARTON, 2002, p. 73). Martin McLoone (1994) explica que, a fim de
satisfazer as normas cinematogrficas de Hollywood, a obra cinematogrfica
tem que deixar de lado a poltica. Assim, o relacionamento entre pai e filho
domina a narrativa, negligenciando a poltica e a Histria, que so deixadas
em segundo plano (McLOONE, 1994, citado em BARTON, 2002, p. 71).
O filme, objeto deste artigo, baseado na narrativa autobiogrfica
de Gerald Patrick Conlon, mais conhecido como Gerry Conlon. A obra
obra foi reeditada com o ttulo In the Name of the Father.
anular o julgamento e no inocent-los do crime (GUDJONSSON &
MACKEITH, 2003, p. 448).

Burke um mendigo irlands, que Gerry e Paul conheceram em um parque;
envolvidos foram sentenciados no mesmo julgamento;
entre ambos;

Nunca tive vontade de matar algum at
atentados terroristas, ele nega qualquer envolvimento.
e a Irlanda do Norte.
Nessa
A natureza
espelha a revolta do povo dominado.
No filme, a morte do pai fortalece a determinao do filho em
lutar para provar a sua inocncia. Ele assume o controle da campanha
iniciada pelo pai e acaba obtendo xito. Nesse contexto, possvel inferir

No
caso de Paul, todavia, no possvel visualizar o pingente. A corrente
assistindo ao filme O poderoso chefo [The Godfather (1972)], cujo tema central
Consideraes finais
As consideraes detalhadas neste trabalho so fundamentadas
basicamente na Histria irlandesa. No entanto, o filme Em nome do pai
realizados por Sheridan e George Some Mothers Son (1996) e The Boxer
In the Name of the Father
(1993), Some Mothers Son (1996), e The Boxer (1997).
Verso em ingls: [...] I realised that making a film set in Ireland or England and
trying to make it work in America or the rest of the world, you had to have a them or
a sub-structure that would appeal on a deeper level (SHERIDAN quoted in
BARTON, 2002, p. 144).

Verso em ingls: Ive spent fifteen years in prison for something I havent done,
for something I knew nothing about. I watched my father die in prison for something
he didnt do. Hes innocent, the Maguires are innocent, the Birmingham Six are
innocent. Lets hope theyre next (CONLON, p. 4, 1993).
empreitadas colonialistas.

McDonald, Jonathan M. Woodward e Harold Pinter.

ironia, a metfora, a metalinguagem e tcnicas memorialsticas diversas, a
especificidades, cdigos e convenes diferentes.
tempo psicolgico.
Ambas as modalidades artsticas, a literria e a flmica so

Whitehall Palace and, probably because of its great success at the time,
opens the First Folio as the first of the Shakespearean comedies. Published
after the writers death, in 1623, due to the efforts of the actors John
Heminges and Henry Condell, the First Folio is the first collection of
Shakespeares dramatic work. Of a total of thirty-six texts in the Folio, eighteen
had not been published before.
The plot of The Tempest consists of a story of vengeance, love and
conspiracies that accompany the fate of Prospero, the Duke of Milan.
Dedicating a great deal of his time to books, especially those of magic, he
withdraws from the state affairs and has his dukedom usurped by his own
brother, Antonio, who, in his search for power, begins to persecute Prospero,
aiming at destroying him. With the help of Gonzalo, a counselor to the king
of Naples, Prospero flees to a Mediterranean island with his daughter
Miranda. Gonzalo supplies the vessel with provisions, clothes and books.
On the enchanted island, at Prosperos service, are the slave Caliban, a
creature half-human, half-monster, and Ariel, a servile spirit, who can be
metamorphosed into water, air and fire. Prosperos main objective is to
take revenge on his traitors. Twelve years later, Alonso, king of Naples, and
his retinue travel for the wedding of Alonsos daughter Claribel. On their
voyage back from Tunis, a great tempest causes Alonsos vessel to go adrift,
forcing everybody on board to abandon the boat. The shipwrecked survive
and find shelter on Prosperos island. They do not know, however, that the
storm, caused by magic with Ariels aid, and the voyagers dispersal were
part of Prosperos vengeance plan. Even so, instead of subjugating his
enemies, Prospero forgives them, thereby regaining his dukedom.
Peter Greenaways film, Prosperos Books, is viewed by many critics
as an eccentric or extravagant adaptation of Shakespeares The Tempest.
Although Greenaways aesthetic artifact approaches Shakespeares classic
text with due respect, the images that appear on the screen do not have the
function of reproducing faithfully the succession of events in the dramatic
text. In other words, the filmmaker visually transforms certain passages of
the source text, superimposing images to actor John Gielguds reading of
the plays original version. Thus, the five acts of Shakespeares text make
themselves literally audible.
While Greenaways earlier works consisted in a reflection on an
artistic form, Prosperos Books is the first film where he brings someone elses
argument to the cinema screen. The very choice of the films title points at
the procedure adopted by Greenaway in his rereading of the Shakespearean

text, that is, the play is recreated starting from Prosperos books. All of
them have an infinite or monstrous character and, assembled, make up
a kind of fantastic library, an abridged version of the Library of Babel
(MACIEL, 2002).3 Thus, it is from the description of the twenty-four
fantastic books in the protagonists library that the cinematographic discourse
is constructed, visually transfiguring passages from the source text. The artifice
of cinematic animation and manipulation of images enables the books to
acquire life on Prosperos enchanted island.
According to the director, the film, in its organizational process,
was divided into Past, Present and Future: the Past corresponds to Prosperos
long explanation of his history, the Present deals with Prosperos various
real-time plotting and the Future concerns those plans Prospero makes to
guarantee the success of his dynastic ambitions for his daughter
(GREENAWAY, 1991, p. 13). The narrated events which occurred in the
first part reappear in the two subsequent ones, deliberately resulting in an
amalgam of memory and fantasy, by means of the superimposition of
images.
To the visual reproductions derived from Shakespeares text, images
extracted from the canonical repertoire of western art history are added,
composing a dynamic whole that encompasses and expands the various
elements amalgamated in the source text: spirits, phantoms, witches, monsters,
magical symbols and elements pertaining to the medieval universe, which
are interwoven with the humanistic values and Prosperos early modern
mentality and Gonzalos utopian dream of the creation of an ideal
community.
The books in this fantastic library function as instrument of both
Prosperos isolation and his interaction with the outer world, in his double
role of creator and creature. In Herbert Kleins words,
Prosperos Books is an ideal portrayal of cognitive and pragmatic change. The
crucial precondition for this process is Prosperos dual role as writer and
protagonist. Whilst the writer can only move within the world of the
imagination, the protagonist can change the world by his imagination.
Writing [] is the conditio sine qua non for the existence of this world
and the audience is constantly reminded of the fact that the production of
a literary work is taking place by the image of a pen or by its scratching noise
on paper. The activities of writing and imagining are located in Prosperos
writing cell (Frame 1): a transportable box located within the library, his

retreat where he can shut out the external world. In his writing cell there are
also his books, which form his most important link to the external world
and are also his instrument to control it. [] Although Prospero rules over
the island inhabitants with the aid of his books, he still withdraws to his
writing cell and continues to write more books which fill up his library.
Thus the books have a dual role as the instrument of isolation and of
interaction, of total unrelatedness and at the same time, of connec tedness.

[] to superimpose three images at the same time or the texts which are
being said about each one of the characters, in such a way that metaphor
and reality can be seen at the same time. The director relates this narrative
procedure, which he had already employed in Death in the Seine, to cubism,
in which several different aspects of the same object are represented at the

are impregnated with the minerals, acids, alkalis, elements, gums, poisons,
balms and aphrodisiacs of the earth. []. With this book Prospero savoured
the geology of the island (GREENAWAY, 1991, p. 20-21). In it, also,
when Prospero runs his thumbnail diagonally across the page, [] the
page and the book ignite with a bright pink flame (GREENAWAY,
1991, p. 80).
A Harsh Book of Geometry is number six. It is a book bound in
leather, with engraved golden numbers, which, when opened, complex
three-dimensional geometrical diagrams rise up out of the pages like models
in a pop up book. [...] Angles are measured by needle-thin metal pendulums
that swing freely, activated by magnets concealed in the thick paper
(GREENAWAY, 1991, p. 20). Plans and diagrams also spring out of the
pages of the Book of Architecture and Other Music: There are definitive models
of buildings constantly shaded by moving cloud-shadow. Noontime piazzas
fill and empty with noisy crowds, [] and music is played in the halls and
towers. With this book, Prospero rebuilt the island into a palace of libraries
that recapitulate all the architectural ideas of the Renaissance
(GREENAWAY, 1991, p. 21). Renaissance architecture is present in the film
settings, in the decorative elements, in the columns that delimit the scenic
space or, in other words, in the labyrinthine space of the island-palace, as
one can observe in the following scene (Frame 2).
103
The image of the first mirror the spectator sees appears in the
same water where Prospero is seen in the opening sequence of the film.
The reflected image is not only that of Prospero but also of the shipwrecks
imagined by him. In this game of reflections, a drop of water, shot in close
up and slow motion, falls into a dark swimming-pool. Other drops fall,
successively, alternating with the first credits, shown on a black background.
Then, the first book appears, the Book of Water, replete with drawings of
every conceivable watery association seas, tempests, rain, snow, clouds,
lakes, waterfalls, streams, canals, water-mills, shipwrecks, floods and tears.
As the pages are turned, the watery elements are often animated. There are
rippling waves and slanting storms. Rivers and cataracts flow and bubble
(GREENAWAY, 1991, p. 17).
Concomitantly with the images of the Book of Water, the associations
established with water, with Prosperos Roman bath, with Ariels interminable
urine jet (shown in the three phases in which this character is presented as
a child, an adolescent and a youth) and with the toy boat facing a storm
refer us back to the opening scene of the Shakespearean text, in which one
hears a tempestuous noise of thunder and lightning (Act I, Scene i) and
the shipmaster and the boatswain enter, urging the mariners to Bestir. Bestir
(Act I, Scene i, l.4) because shipwreck seems imminent (Frames 3 and 4).

subjects. The films title appears first, followed by the final credits. A new
close-up of the cloaks cloth indicates the end of the credits. But, this time,
the color blue changes gradually and the cloak acquires a reddish hue. At the
end of the film, only the words The End are seen, in the middle of the
image, and the reference to the authors copyright appears in small characters,
in the lower part of the screen (BOUCHY, 2008).
The blue cloak and the red cloak serve, in their turn, to highlight
the protagonists dual role: Prospero, the playwright, who acts as the author
of the play staged throughout the film, and Prospero, the actor, who, like
the other characters, performs under the dramatists pen and command.
Prospero the writer (or dramatist) establishes a relationship between the
image built by Prospero and Shakespeares creation process. Resorting to
the manuscript word, materialized on the screen, and its relation to the very
writing process, the filmmaker shows in close-up objects such as the ink,
the quill and the inkpot (VIEIRA; DINIZ, 2000, p. 77)7
With ink, quill and inkpot, Greenaway pays homage to the copyists
of the Middle Ages, while visually evoking the process of cultural
transmission from past to present. The graphic richness of calligraphy is
explored by the filmmaker in the very process of the construction of images
(Frame 6).

with Brody Neuenschwand, thus, allowed for the exploration of new filmic
possibilities. The filmmaker wished to inscribe, in the diegetic space, a
handwriting similar to Shakespeares. Neuenschwands training in art history
and his studies of manuscripts at the university made it possible for him to
analyze and reproduce Shakespeares hand. However, as Karine Bouchy
(2008) points out,
the only documents on which the calligrapher could be based are limited to
some signatures, which is far from being sufficient to establish a style and a
whole alphabet. But, for Peter Greenaway, the cinema is not a matter of
reproduction, of realism or of authenticity. Shakespeares writing was only
a starting point to determine a graphic rhythm. It was even more important
that this writing be legible since Greenaways main intention was to explore
the interactions among the movement of the strokes, the read word, the
same word pronounced in voice-off and the image.9

In 2007, the film Mar, nossa histria de amor (Mar, our Love Story)
was launched in Brazil having Lucia Murat as the director. The trailer, the
teasers in the Internet, and the ads in the newspapers referred to it, at that
time, as Another Romeo. Another Juliet. Another love story, and also as
Lucia Murats Romeo and Juliet. Such calls made it clear that among the
several possible interpretations of a work of art, the audience would come
across one particular rewriting.
Lucia Murat, a former journalist, a political activist during the
Brazilian dictatorship period in the 70s, and a classical ballet graduate, shifts
the Shakespearean lovers to the shanty towns of Mar, in Rio de Janeiro, in
the 21st century, involving the drama in the mantle of crime, drug traffic,
and urban violence so frequently found in many metropolitan areas around
the world these days. The conflict between the Montecchios and the Capulets
is re-written in a war between two factions which dominate the drug traffic
in the community of Mar. Analdia, the other Juliet, is the daughter of
the traffic leader who is in jail, and Jonathan, her Romeo, is the brother of the
opposing faction leader. The two lovers are separated by an environment of
extreme violence, and find in the community dance group a refuge for their
dreams, love, art and the possibility of a decent life, away from criminality.
The film turns the Elizabethan play into a musical, depicting an environment
where dance practices are the only possibility for fascination and freedom,
not only for the lovers, but for the youth of these fictionalized slums.
Right at the beginning, along the seven long minutes of the film
opening, Vinicius DBlack, the actor who interprets the protagonist Jonathan,
sings a hip-hop hit Favela which means shanty towns in Portuguese. All
along, the camera moves through the alleys of Mar, where the dance group
moves rhythmically, in different settings. The song refers to icons of Brazilian
music Sinh, Candeia, Noel, Cartola and the lyrics sung by the chorus
set the scene: Go and tell her that Rio de Janeiro is all a set of shanty
towns. Go and tell her that the song I sing comes from the shanty towns.
The breaking from the Shakespearean canon and from the
intellectual elite who ultimately claims ownership over the play is clearly
announced. Sacralization of the myth of authorship is bound not only to
the English source. It is shared with recognized composers in the reception
culture. Lucia Murat appropriates the previous text, shifts it and re-signifies
it, creating new characters inserted in another setting, time, languages,
permeated by other values, decoupling the source-work of its traditional
value.
Scripta Uniandrade, v. 9, n. 2, jul.-dez. 2011
116
In one of the takes that follows, still in the opening of the film, the
camera goes through a wall covered by graffiti, where one reads: Art is
what the world will turn itself into. Not what the world is now. Here,
interpretation and creativity get intertwined in the expression turn into,
leading the audience back to the re-signifying of the 16th century play, and
to the future possibility of social transformation through the arts. In fact,
despite the shocking scenes of violence, the film gradually builds up in the
spectator the hope for the triumph of an energetic dancing youth over the
rule of crime. Art is clearly the antidote for determinism, and the hope for
better days is often also built through dialogues and statements. When
Analdia, the new Juliet Capulet, refuses to visit her father in jail, she says:
Ive got no obligation to visit an outlaw in jail. She also refuses marrying
her fathers second man in traffic dealings the metamorphosed Paris by
saying: I dont want to marry a criminal. I am not marrying a criminal
statements which relate to Juliets break as concerns paternal authority in
Shakespeares 16th century play Romeo and Juliet.
The prohibition of a woman to act on the Elizabethan stages has
to do with Analdia, whose integrity, determination, and female dignity are
expressed by her vigorous dance movements on the narrow alleys of Mar,
where young men pass by casually holding rifles and pistols. Here, the
Renaissance paternal authority is shifted to the law imposed by the Red and
the Blue factions of drug trafficking which fight for the control of the
actions in the area, defining what is acceptable and what is prohibited.
Romeo Montecchio is shifted to Jonathan, the community MC,
whose dream is to have his CD released. Divided between his two older
brothers Paulo, a peaceful and idealist worker, who enjoys singing samba
songs with his friends in his spare time, and Dudu, the adopted brother,
leader of the Blue faction that also fights for the drug traffic control in the
slums Jonathan lives the dilemma of accepting or not the help of his
transgressing brother who promises to financially support his career with
money earned from drug dealing.
Thus, the migration of signs and canonical resources, reconfigured
into the mass culture in Mar, nossa histria de amor, brings the themes of
Romeo and Juliet closer to the spectator, supplementing and revitalizing the
canonical work of art, by presenting to the audience a universe which is
much closer to their own issues, allowing the public to seek in the walls of
their confinement [] their mental images of the world (SANTIAGO,
2004, p.125). Those, who have traditionally been excluded from the live

The reader/spectator who is not familiar with Romeo and Juliet tends
to be surprised with the use of such language, as much as Lucia Murats
film will startle the audience with the use of a language filled with cursing.
Obviously, the environment to which Shakespeares play has been shifted
does not allow for subtleties and the obscene language reveals itself as quite
blunt. It is worth mentioning that in lieu of the romantic language found in
the lovers dialogues in the bards text, the film brings movements of dance
often to the sound of Prokofiev.
The change in perception generates a new approach to translated
literary works, leading us to understand that if a work of art is part of a
tradition, it is alive and open to transformation by means of different
interpretations and different intertextual dialogues, which expand into
multiple readings. In a paradoxical move, the translator undresses the work
of art of its sacred mantle and popularizes it, even though the removal of
such mantle results precisely from the recognition of the aura of sacralization.
Respect and recognition motivate the translation. The work of art loses
something when it is technically produced and reproduced, but it acquires,
as a consequence, the infinite places and contexts of its reproduction. And,
if it loses its cult value, it acquires another function, adopting a non-specialized
social practice [] (SANTIAGO, 2004, p. 114).
Mar, nossa histria de amor keeps its theme ties with the play which
originated it, bringing traces of such precedence, even though, simultaneously,
erasing them. The shifting of the previous idea implies, necessarily, forgetting,
Scripta Uniandrade, v. 9, n. 2, jul.-dez. 2011
119
even under the mantle of the debt. Here, I recall Roland Barthes S/Z,
reminding us that it is precisely because we forget that we read.
With her filmic re-reading, Murat not only confirms the plurality
of meanings of cultural productions, but also endorses the non-existence
of the so-called unique and crystallized meaning which some critics try to
attach to canonical works of art. The film director affirms in an interview:
[...] I must admit that the technical rigor of classical dancing has always
fascinated me. But life has also shown me that the same rigor can be found
in the set of drum players of Mocidade Independente, in a Broadway
show or in a good Swan Lake performance. The film maker thus decouples
the concepts of originality and quality of the work of art, and confirms
that the demands from the critics and other patronage groups, who define
what should be culturally accepted, are based on subservience and in the
erasing of the translators point of view when faced with the purity
and the truth of the unreachable original text. Such expressions
underline cultural inequality and, simultaneously, the subalternity of translation.
The resistance to adaptations of canonical works reflect a remainder of the
beliefs which held true in the 16th century, when the minimal interpretation
unit was similarity, that is, the idea of an origin coupled to truth, ignoring
that the beginning always results from a choice on the part of the interpreter
in light of the unfinished feature of the act of interpretation, a feature
which also led, the canonical William Shakespeare to adapt most of his
plays. After all, his Romeo and Juliet has its roots in 3rd century Greece, goes
on to the Italian Renaissance, and gets to the English poet Arthur Brooke,
who in his poem The Tragical History of Romeo and Juliet, aimed at alerting
youth to the need for controlling their impulses, in order not to be
overwhelmed by passion.
I refer to Gilles Deleuze, in his The Logic of Sense, when he claims
that the precedent work, in its condition of original, should not grant it a
status of fundament. The feature of uniqueness of the source-text will also
apply to the reproduced text, since each translation will build its own
reproduction. The model defined by the source-text will never be copied,
for translation or re-creation will be built at another place of reception and
production. In its position of a false suitor, it will have to kill the model, so
that it can survive and, because it turns out a criminal, it will never be covered
120
with the originals aura of sacralization, intrinsic to the perennial model, the
truth, the origin, and image of perfection. The translated work does not
want the aura, it does not intend to be a faithful copy. Its value lies in being
another work of art, re-created out of a process resulted from a critical
plunge into the source-text, inserted in another milieu, and sometimes through
another medium. In the case of her re-reading of Romeo and Juliet, Lucia
Murat herself confirms that any attempt to simply copy the rigor of the
high brow culture would fatally result more so for those who enjoy and
are experts in dancing in ridicule. Thus, by removing from the previous
text its aura of an unreachable work for the monolingual and excluded
reader/spectator, translation takes away from the original its feature of
supreme and sole truth, in order to allow those who get in contact with the
new text to approach it with fresh looks. However, translation does that
without fully breaking away from the text which came before. There will
always be some kind of tie, to a lesser or greater extent, between the source
and the translated text. In the case of interlingual translations of literary
texts, for instance, the tie between the source-text and translation can be
closer than in intersemiotic translations of literary texts into film.
The task of the translator is thus performed on a palimpsest, that
is, translation is re-written over the traces of a manuscript which has been
washed and scraped. That does not imply though that a translated text will
be less original and unique. The themes of violence and death are not only
present in Mar, nossa histria de amor. They also permeate the play Romeo and
Juliet. Violence in Mar is apparently worse because it is part of our daily
lives, constituting the subject matter of daily news on TV and in the
newspapers. As one of the characters of the film puts it, after watching the
Romeo and Juliet ballet danced to the sound of Prokofiev on a DVD: In the
past, killing was at the point of a sword. Today, it is at the point of a gun.
Once the long presentation of the film ends, and the audience has
been acquainted with the re-signifying features of space and culture, the
chorus of rappers announces the prologue of the Shakespearean translation:
Our love story begins in a funk dance [] eternal love born in the sparkle
of an instant [] Trusting the immortality of the actor. Trusting the
immortality of love. The re-signified prologue inserts hope for an ever

that his brother is alive in the coffin, Dudu shoots towards it. Also, to the
sound of Prokofiev, the spectator sees then a thread of blood running
through an invisible crack in the coffin.
From there, the camera moves through the unorganized architectural
compound of the shanty town, where we see a waving flag of a popular
soccer team. In voice-over the spectator is told: The Community of Mar
Radio Station now closes its daily activities. The image of a solitary rooster,
who will probably announce brighter mornings, is also brought to the screen,
associated to the voice-over.
And so ends this story of another Romeo and another Juliet, or
Lucia Murats Romeo and Juliet. I have not attempted to build a critical study
of the film. I have just argued that intersemiotic translation of canonical
works of art, that is, performances of mass media which remain excluded
from the universities and museums, uncapable of reading and looking at
the high brow cultures because they ignore the history of knowledge and
styles (CANCLINI, 2008, p. 205) can help in the education of todays socalled plain individual. After all, as Silviano Santiago reminds us, in a peripheral
country such as Brazil, it will not be through the painful exercise of a mere
teaching of basic reading and writing skills that the excluded illiterate
individual will assimilate information and use it in the understanding of
society and the world where he/she lives (SANTIAGO, 2004, p.129).
Translation reaches the public through the cinema, television, comic
strips, cartoons, books not as another model, but as a producer of instability
which speaks for itself, is unfaithful, and does not submit itself to the essence
of an origin. It sets its own logic. And through this very logic it offers a
chance for democratization of the arts, bringing the outside world closer
to the contemporary individual, in a country where a huge mass of culturally
excluded people do not have access to the live performances or to texts
published in a foreign language.

relativamente suave, em but I have / That honourable grief ).
pea. No original, a fala tem vinte versos e meio o primeiro verso
comea no quarto p do pentmetro.

tradicionais heroicos, martelos-agalopados, sficos e imbicos perfeitos
duas tradues posteriores a Antnio e Clepatra, a preferncia do tradutor

grande apelo popular. Datadas do incio do sculo XIX, as primeiras fices
a violncia.
cidades.
Desde Edgar Allan Poe, considerado o precursor do gnero, as
investigao e interpretao do protagonista racional.
as misteriosas e muitas vezes falaciosas pistas que o conduziram soluo
do mistrio que envolve o crime. Nos Estados Unidos, a fico detetivesca
tomou rumos diferentes. Raymond Chandler e Dashiel Hammett so

3 A figura do detetive
A figura de Max Work
iniciativa e aceita investigar o caso.
imaginria de Max Work.
no caderno vermelho.
Lembrando o
autor Barthesiano, no mundo ps-moderno de City of Glass, h vrias
No entanto,

obras do escritor Neil Gaiman e do ilustrador e artista grfico Dave McKean.
e mapas, at livros que possuem cheiros. As imagens so muito exploradas
No mercado editorial,
alguns ttulos infantis so sucessos editoriais como as sries As aventuras do
leitura, criando futuros leitores.

Palavra e imagem
Segundo Walter Benjamin (2002), o livro infantil entra no universo
Muitos livros ilustrados ainda so textos multimdias, porm, h
colas, envelopes, plsticos, dentre outros.
Ambos os autores so
(1994), Violent Cases (1987) e Signal to Noise (1992). Neil Gaiman escreveu
Stardust (1999) e Belas maldies (1990). Os autores so conhecidos por uma
sobreposies, texturas e tipografias especiais.
Ele explora tambm o inusitado e a
fantasia, como em The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish [O dia em que

desde seus precursores at a
Sunderland, trabalhando vrias
referncias intertextuais e intermiditicas. Talbot apropria-se tambm
de imagens e ilustraes, em
transposies intersemiticas, fuses
e sobreposies, explorando a composio das pginas e a linguagem
dos quadrinhos, de modo a criar uma
obra contempornea.

Introduo
Nesse perodo,
foi publicado e difundido o livro Seduction of the Innocent (1954), de Frederic
as histrias em quadrinhos so difundidas na mdia e algumas so, tambm,
So diversos
o pblico infanto-juvenil quanto adulto.
A linguagem

Convencido a
Apreciador do humor

nesse sentido as artes miditicas so a expresso da criao artstica atual
exprimindo a sensibilidade e o conhecimento do homem do incio do
Denise Azevedo Duarte Guimares,

damos toda a importncia. Esse o sentido da famosa frase the medium is
the message (o meio a mensagem), que deve ser entendida a partir do plo
do sujeito (o meio), e no do objeto (a mensagem).

Of the many learned clichs circulating in the widening gyre of media studies, the
most persistent may be the assurance that all the nasty things we can say about
computers were already spelled out in Platos critique of writing in Phaedrus.
Ns usvamos a expresso

Trilhas sonoras, shows, clipes,
filmes e livros so oferecidos gratuitamente aos internautas. O ciberespao
textos dividirem espao e importncia.
No
a acessibilidade so talvez as principais vantagens das redes sociais.
so testados e a concluso sempre a mesma: no existem limites. Toda
expresso artstica sempre encontra novas formas, novas tendncias, novos
estilos, prprios superao:
e conceitos preexistentes. [] tal liberdade, inclusive, pode viabilizar
interessantes trocas sgnicas entre arte e tecnologia. (GUIMARES, 2007,
