Introduction
A. Attention-Getter AG TYPE: Story-( In 2016, Portugal will have some important visitors.
These visitors have come from a place nearly 8,000 miles away. They are the voyagers of the
Hokulea who left on their voyage in 2013.
B. Transition - Link to Thesis (Though miles apart, Portugal has had impact on Hawaii)
C. Thesis Statement (Portugal has had many appearances in the history of Hawaii )
D. Preview of Points- ( Now, I will be talking to you about the Portuguese immigration into
Hawaii, a shaky future Portugal, and lastly, similarities and what we could learn from Portugal.)
E. Transition: Signpost (Now, on to my first point.)
II.
Body
A. Main Point 1 (In 1878, the first Portuguese immigrated into Hawaii)
a. Subpoint 1- (The Portuguese arrived here in Hawaii to work on
the sugar plantations.)
1. Form of support- (Facts: According to the site, Hawaii history, the Portuguese arrived
between 1878 and 1913. The heaviest migration was in 1913 with over 2,000 Portuguese
coming to the islands. The main reason they came to Hawaii was because the rough economy
in Portugal during the 19th century. ) (Portuguese Workers Arrive - Hawaii History - Short Stories."

b. Subpoint 2- (Portugal bought over many parts of their cultures that

have influenced Hawaii)
1. Form of support -(Example: The Portuguese have given Hawaii many of its traditional
cuisine such as malasadas and spicy sausages. Another example would be musical
instruments. The Portuguese bought over the slack key guitar when they immigrated here to the
islands.) (Portuguese, Culture, Hilo, Hawaii, Language, History." Portuguese, Culture, Hilo, Hawaii,
Language, History. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 June 2015.

c. Transition: Review-Preview-(Now, lets move on to what could

happen to Portugal.)
B.

Main Point 2 (Portugal may end up like Greece economy-wise).

a. Subpoint 1- (Their GDP is in decline .)

1. Form of support- (Statistics: Portugals GDP has decreased by almost 10% in 6 years
with no improvement. Portugal could continue to take this 10% decrease for another 6 years or
worse. This means that by 2021, Portugal could have had a 20-25% decline in their GDP. That
is only 10% more than Greece who is currently in debt. ) (Three Little Piggies." The Economist. The
Economist Newspaper, 16 Feb. 2015. Web. 20 June 2015.

b. Subpoint 2- (Their unemployment rate is increasing)

1. Form of support -(Testimony: Portugal averaged 7.61 percent from 1983 until 2015,
reaching an all time high of 17.50 percent. This is a quote from the website, Trading
economics. This shows that their economy cant support a lot of workers and with the GPD in
decline, more workers will be laid off.) (Portugal Unemployment Rate | 1983-2015 | Data | Chart |
Calendar | Forecast." Portugal Unemployment Rate | 1983-2015 | Data | Chart | Calendar | Forecast.
N.p., n.d. Web. 20 June 2015. <http://www.tradingeconomics.com/portugal/unemployment-rate>)

c. Transition: Internal Summary-(We have talked about the history

within the two but now lets talk about what we could do with Portugal.)
C. Main Point 3 ( Portugal and Hawaii have many similarities but there are things that we
could learn from them while visiting.)
a. Subpoint 1- (Both cultures have similarities.)
1. Form of support- (Comparison: In both cultures, loyalty to the family comes before
anything else. In Portugal, family is also the social structure for their culture just like it is in
Hawaiian culture. Both cultures are also extremely polite and hospitable to everyone even
strangers they come across. ) (Portugal - Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette." Portugal. N.p.,
n.d. Web. 20 June 2015. <http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/portugal.html>)
b. Subpoint 2- (While there, they could learn a lot from their culture.)
1. Form of support -(Narrative: Back in Portugal, they only do business with those they know
and trust. Good salesmen try to earn the hearts of the customers by attempting to become
friends with the person. The Portuguese use this tactic as a huge part of their business culture. )
(Portugal - Language, Culture, Customs and Etiquette." Portugal. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 June 2015.
c. Transition: Sign post- (Now, lets wrap this whole thing up)
III.
Conclusion
A. Restate Thesis -(Portugal has made many appearances in the history of Hawaii)
B. Review of Points (Today I talked to you about the Portuguese immigration into Hawaii,
a popular event in Portugal, and the similarities and differences between Portugal and Hawaii )
C. Closing Statement CS Type: Summary -(Now, we talked about those three main points
and learned about the history between Portugal and Hawaii but also the similarities and
differences between the two.)
