Experiences in Growing up and Challenges in School

Fueled by his desire to give service to the underserved, Alberto G. Romualdez who
earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences from the Ateneo de Manila University
took up Medicine at the University of the Philippines Manila where he became a member of Mu
Sigma Phi, one of Asias oldest medical fraternity. He became a fellow on Tumor Immunology at
the University of Connecticut and Membrane Biophysics at the Harvard Medical School in the
United States of America.
After graduation, Dr. Romualdez taught at the UP College of Medicine for a few years.
Being a professor at the college enabled him to educate other aspiring doctors and share to them
his vision in the health care profession. Teaching gave him the opportunity to help more patients.
He said, If you are a surgeon, you operate patients one at a time, but if you are a teacher, you
multiply yourself at least 100 times every year.
Dr. Romualdez eventually served as the Dean of the UP College of Medicine in 1984
until 1987. One of his objectives during his term is to produce more health care professionals for
public service, not for private practice. In an interview with Health and Lifestyle (H&L)
magazine, he expressed his aspirations to build up people who consider service as their most
important priority, not earning money or acquiring esoteric skills.
