The chalkboard has played a


pivitol role in the evolution of
education and can be considered
as one of the first technologies
used in education. The early
chalkboards were individual slate
boards that students used before
or instead of paper and pen. The
first mounted chalkboard was
introduced in the early 1800s.
Chalkboards for the most part
have now been replaced in most
classrooms by better alternatives.

In the early 1960s the overhead projector was used with a


clear sheet of film called a
transparency. Instructors would
write on the film using special
markers and it would be then
displayed on the wall or screens
within the classroom. As with
the chalkboard, you will not see
many of these in todays classrooms.

When document cameras were


introduced into classrooms they,
for the most part, replaced the
overhead projector. The document
camera combined with the data
projector, captures and projects
images to the screen of any object
that is in the capture area. Like the
overhead projector, images can be
magnified, but the image from a
document camera is much better
quality. Unlike the overhead projector, the data projector can project 2 or 3 dimensional objects
allowing instructors/teachers to do
live demonstrations with objects.

welcomed change in that no

Lecture capture is not a new concept. People have been doing this
using video cameras for many years.
With the evolution of classroom
technologies however, lecture capture has become more automated
and is another technology that is
available at many schools and institutions.

The lightboard is a new technology


that was created by Michael Peshkin, an instructor at Northwestern
University as an attempt to increase interaction with his students. Michael has a hybrid class
and wanted to prerecord his lectures so that he could make better
use of class time and engage more
with his students.
