Lesson 3

Identify what strategies can be done to complete multiplication problems are multiplied by
the numbers 2, 3, and 5.
Lesson Overview: Students will practice their computation facts for 2, 3, and 5. The teacher
will begin the lesson by introducing the new information. The teacher will explain the strategies
of repeated addition and how to use a number line when multiplying by the number 2, 3, and 5.
The teacher will model multiplication problems using 2, 3, and 5 for each strategy. Then, the
teacher will have the students complete the multiplication table to keep in their math journals.
Next, the students will complete the worksheets for 2, 3, and 5 using the strategies provided. The
teacher will then read the short stories that go along with the factors 2, 3, and 5. Finally, the
worksheets will be corrected and graded in Schoology. Feedback and comments from the teacher
will be provided on their independence performance.
Materials Needed:
Multiplication Sheets for facts 2 , 3 and 5 (Appendix D, E, & G)
Blank Multiplication Table Template (fill out columns and rows for 2, 3 and 5) (Appendix P)
Short Stories (read the stories that go with only the factors 2 ,3 and 5)

Document Camera
Interactive Whiteboard (to draw out number lines)
Calculators (can be used to check answers)
Computer devices (laptops, iPads)
Lesson Objective: When given multiplication strategies of repeated addition (skip counting),
students will be able to use them to compute multiplication facts with 80% accuracy.
Time: One class session (45 minutes)
Classroom Set-Up: 20-25 Student desks in pairs of two for shoulder partner pair share during
the lesson.
Computers, Projectors, Smart Interactive Whiteboard, and Schoology Online System
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity
Students will have their math journal from the day before and at the top of a new
sheet of paper, write down at the top; Strategies for Multiplying with 2, 3, and 5.

Step 2: Content Presentation

The teacher states what the class will be learning strategies on how to multiply
when
using 2, 3, and 5.

The teacher shows first the strategies that when anything is multiplied by the
number 2 to solve simply double the number or use repeated addition for the
answer (2x5=10, 5 doubled is 10,using repeated addition the number 5 added
twice is 5+5=10 ).

The teacher used the document camera to show the students as they are writing
this strategy down in the math journal.

The teacher shows the second strategy that when anything is multiplied by the
number 3 to solve simply triple the number or use repeated addition for the
answer (3x4=12, 4 tripled is 12, using repeated addition the number 4 added three
times is 4+4+4=12).

The teacher used the document camera to show the computation as each student is
writing this strategy down in the math journal.

The teacher shows the third strategy that when anything is multiplied by the
number 5 to solve simply count by 5s that many times to get the answer (5x8=40,
if I skip by 5s eight times it will equal 40, 5+5+5+5+5+5+5+5=40).

The teacher will draw a number line on the interactive whiteboard and show the
class how to use it by skip counting to solve a multiplication problem.

The teacher will model a few examples with multiplication on the interactive
whiteboard using these strategies and have the students complete a few sample
problems as a class.

Students will talk with their shoulder partner (per share) and tell them the new
strategies they have learned from each other.

The teacher will show the students how to fill out the blank multiplication table
with the answers for the 2 and 3 columns/rows. Students will keep the
multiplication table in their math journal to refer during the year. (Appendix P)

The teacher will read any short stories that go with using the factors 2, 3 and 5
with the students.

The teacher will have the students log on to their Schoology account and
complete the three worksheets for multiplying by 2, 3 and 5. (Appendix D, E, &
G)

. Worksheets will be corrected in Schoology and students can check their grades
in their personal Schoology account. There may also be comments made with any
feedback from the teacher on their independence performance.

Step 3: Learner Participation

Students will write in the multiplication strategies in their math journals.

Students will complete some sample problems with using repeated addition and creating
a number line to skip count from the teacher.

Students will do a partner share explaining each other the new strategies when
multiplying by the number 2, 3, and 5.

Students will complete the blank multiplication table with a teacher filling out the
columns/rows for multiplying by 2, 3, and 5. (Appendix P)

Students will listen while the teacher reads short stories that go with factors 2, 3, and 5.

Students will complete the worksheets for multiplying by 2, 3, and 5 in Schoology.

(Appendix D, E, & G)

Step 4: Assessment
The teacher will have the students log on to their Schoology account and have the
students complete the two digital worksheet assignments. The students must complete
each worksheet independently. Calculators can be a technology tool to use to check
the answers.
Step 5: Follow-Through Activity
Any unfinished word problems from the digital worksheets may be able to be
completed at home in Schoology as homework. Completion of both digital
worksheets will be due the following day.
