2 Research-Based Learner Strategies - model and facilitate the use of researchbased, learner-centered strategies addressing the diversity of all students.
Reflection
The lesson plan project was completed for ITEC 7430. This project required the
students to create a public service announcement on the topic of childhood obesity.
The reflection below discusses how this artifact meets this standard.
This project followed a constructivist model of instruction. Reeves (1998) states that a
constructivist learning environment is a place in which learners work together and
support each other as they use a variety of tools and information resources in their
guided pursuit of learning goals and problem-solving activities. This unit was created
where students knew the issue was childhood obesity, and their challenge was to
discover things that are promoting and causing the obesity rate to be as high for
children as it is. Rakes, Fields, and Cox (2006) state that constructivist environments
create active classrooms that combine the tools of constructivism and visualization tools
that enable communication and collaboration among learners in a sociocultural context.
At the beginning of the unit, I showed a public service announcement to the students,
which served as a model for what they were to complete. From that point on, the
project became learner-centered while I assumed the role of the facilitator allowing
students to explore, analyze, and discover answers for themselves. Diversity was
addressed in this assignment because students were tasked with identifying trends
between gender as well as ethnicity in regards to childhood obesity. The students
created a storyboard or script to help with the planning of their public service
announcement. They then created their public service announcements. Top projects
from each class were featured on Hawk Talk, which further brought attention to the
diverse issues facing children to the entire school.
From completing this artifact, I learned a lot about the benefits of utilizing a
constructivist model for instruction. The research I conducted prior to this unit came to
life in my classroom as students worked collaboratively to discover things for
themselves to create a product they were ultimately proud of. The main thing I would
change about this artifact is the addition of extension activities. There were some
students in my class who were very proficient in using the technology and finished the
assignments early. In the future, it will be beneficial to both myself and my students if I
plan for this to occur and have some type of engaging extension assignment for the
students to complete.
This artifact definitely had a positive impact on student learning, both in my class and
throughout the school. Students mastered the content while using technology to
produce a final product, which some students were able to share with the rest of the
school. The impact of their learning was assessed at the completion of this project.
This project also impacted faculty development within my department. I was the only

health teacher who did this assignment. Several students from other classes
complained to their teacher that they were not getting to do this assignment. This led to
me being able to train the other health teachers on how to implement this assignment
with their students and we will all be implementing this next year.
