The Prison

Crisis
Nothing can be more abhorrent to democracy
than to imprison a person or keep him in prison
because he is unpopular. This is really the test
of civilization.
-Winston Churchill

History of the Federal Bureau of

Prisons

We protect public safety by ensuring that federal offenders serve

their sentences of imprisonment in facilities that are safe, humane,
cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and provide reentry
programming to ensure their successful return to the community.

Established by the Department of Justice

In charge of Management and regulation of all Federal penal and

correctional institutions.

The Sentencing Reform Act of 1984 established determinate

sentencing, abolished parole, and reduced good time

Towards the end of 1999, illegal drugs and illegal immigration

significantly increased the level of conviction rates

The Prison System in Society

The USA is viewed as having one of the more corrupt prison

systems

Over 2.5 million children have parents who are behind bars

Most people are imprisoned for non-criminal charges

Prisons are becoming massively overcrowded

They cannot vote because they have a felony record

Our prison systems cost state, federal, and local $75 billion
annually

People coming out of prison feel dehumanized

Prisons are Over-Crowding!

It costs billions of extra dollars!

The American Legislative

Exchange Council explains
how nearly one of every one
hundred people in the United
States become incarcerated
at some point in their life, and
their website explains by
state the statistic of exactly
how much money is being
spent to keep people in prison
(ALEC).

ALEC. Prison Overcrowding. 21 June 2015. Document. 21 June 2015.

How can we stop this?

This ALEC organization

believes that if people

have more strict rules in
which they have to
follow, then there will be
less crime because of
the common moralities
that will be memorized
and enforced to be
followed.

Causes of the Violent Outbreaks

People arent being mentally

helped to their needs

People have fear of not being

healthy in certain
correctional facilities

The California Department of

Corrections and
Rehabilitation ordered over
3000 inmates to be moved to
avoid valley fever outbreaks

Population is definitely a
major factor

Deaths under Federal

Jurisdiction

BJS. Deaths In Custody Statistical Tables. 207. Article. 21 June 2015.

The Bureau of
Justice
Statistics
shows the
deaths of
prison
inmates, and
explains how
they died
from 19992008 (BJS).

Unbearable Treatment

There are way too many deaths due to unnatural causes

Inmates arent getting the necessary treatments to survive

The cost reductions for food have left people eating scraps

All of this leads to a more corrupt society

Rape, abuse, and mistreatment of prisoners are heard from

their families at home

Treatment has an exponential chance of bettering itself if

people were separated based on the level of their conviction
rate

What we can do

Recent research shows crime as being a low concern subject

among voters

Voters want to know the difference from violent/non-violent

criminals

The people want non-violent offenders away from prison and

reduced time

There should be supervision for offenders released from prison

People on parole and probation should have more supervision

These have been the opinions of the Public Opinion Strategies

whom directly have correlation to the Federal Bureau of Prisons
