slower this time. One man broke into the innermost recesses of the
Australian government and went on a rampage with our politicians
deepest secrets. The Cyber War turned white hot as governments
were panicked by revelations of who was saying what to whom,
almost in real time. They called him an infomanfuck, sorry.
Its good, good rhythm, just go from the start of the last sentence.
Your pacing is fine, the director said.
Kat glanced behind her at the green backdrop, which in postproduction would become a blur of digital images. Then she looked
at the monitor again. The tip of her nose itched, but she dared not
scratch it for fear of ruining her make-up. She settled for trying to
wiggle it, which prompted Camera Kat, gazing off into the space to
her right, to make a ridiculous face.
Okay, here goes. They called him an info-terrorist and launched
a worldwide hunt for the hacker humiliating the Australian government. But by the time theyd caught their man, there was a new
superwarrior in the annals of the Cyber War: Michael Servetus.
She glanced back at Camera Kat. How was that? she watched
herself ask.
Perfect, said the director. Really nice pace, Katrina.
Yep, that was fantastic, called Susan.
Can we go one more time, just a little bit slower? said the
director. Just so weve got some options when we put it together,
some of it will just be voiceover.
Okay, Kat said. She straightened her jacket again. Slower. A lot
slower? A little slower?
Just a little slower.
Cool. Okay. I talk too fast, I know.
Yeah no no, just a wee bit slower. Couple of seconds. Also,
can you put just a little more emphasis on the ending, on Michael
Servetus?
Michael Servetus, she said softly to herself. Michael fucking
Servetus. She looked into the lens. The autocue had scrolled back.
She flicked her gaze to the Kat in the monitor, who was again
looking away.

One of these days Ill catch you watching me, Camera Kat, she
thought. We rolling?
Yep, whenever you like.
It was the day Australia lost its cyber-innocencea hack that
rocked...

Thats me, Chalmers had said when hed first read it. A real fucking
family man.
Thanks for coming, Anderson said, walking towards them
from his desk some metres across the room. He clutched a glass of
sparkling mineral water, which he proceeded to spill as he sat down.
Oops. He rose again and fetched a tissue from his desk. Good
weekend?
Would have been if I didnt spend most of it here, said
Campanella, who rarely spoke much above a whisper.
Anderson had a thick shock of grey hair and was thin, almost
gaunt, as he had been since his oncological difficulties several years
before. He wasnt shy about discussing his bout of cancer, indeed he
seemed to regard it as evidence of his capitalist superiority, and often
helpfully passed on to interlocutors and recipients of his charitable

largesse (the Anderson Fund for Mens Health) the lessons hed
learned while battling the disease, chief among which were dont
give up, stay positive and focus. He dabbed at the water on the
table, then placed his glass carefully on the tissue and sat down again.
The reason for the meeting was notionally a mystery to Chalmers,
but he had his suspicions: Veldtechs half-yearly results had shown
that revenues were falling and unlikely to improve for the rest of
the year. With ETSs share price under sustained pressure, the last
thing Marshall or investors wanted to hear was bad news from
Sydney. Anderson would be keen to show Marshall that things were
on the improve. The prospect of even more second-guessing from
Anderson was not a cheery one; he already had a habit of roaming
the building, randomly interrupting staff to inquire what they were
doing and offer homilies, which staff felt unable to ignore, no matter
how inappropriate his advice.
Look, I wanted to discuss a couple of things early this week.
There was an emergency board meeting on Saturday that I teleconned
into. Currently ETS is looking at a profit downgrade of about twelve
per cent for the full year.
He paused for a moment. Rathbone whistled quietly.
But it gets worse. It looks like theyre going to miss out on the
CBIS contract.
Ah, fuck, said Campanella, unusually loudly.
What? said Chalmers, alarmed. I thought that was a lock.
So did everyone in Marshall. Seems SAIC is going to get it. Its
not confirmed yet, but when its announced, the share price is going
to cop a hammering, said Anderson.
ETS had been confident the Connected Battlescape Information
System, an idea the company had helped the Pentagon develop,
would be a key new revenue stream going forward. The idea was a
system to integrate real-time feeds from sensors on vehicles, aircraft
and soldiers gear into a coherent, easily navigable data stream. The
original Pentagon appropriation was over US$10 billion, but that
had been cut during one of the Congressional budget standoffs. Even
so, losing the contract would be a painful blow for the company.

take another hit. They want a stream of good news about costs and
revenue to announce between now and end of financial in March so
theres a floor under the price.
Bloody great, said Rathbone tiredly. I dont know about you
guys, but Im not exactly overburdened with staff.
Maybe I should have put some extra on just so Id have a few
to sack when shit like this happens, said Chalmers. He sipped his
coffee, which he hadnt touched throughout the meeting.
I cant believe they fucked up CBIS, said Campanella. She was
more agitated than Chalmers had ever seen her. I was there when
that started. It was our fucking idea. Then they got the Pentagon
interested in it. We had some general on the board who put the
whole deal in place. Then he quit last year, and theyve buggered
it up.
So I guess Jane is in for a shock when she gets back, said
Rathbone.
And I imagine there wont be a new head of Corporate any time
soon, said Maria as they left the lift.

Katrina Sharpe, what does this say about politicians and social
media?
Kat smiled across the glass desk at the host of NVR, Gareth
Males. Inside the desk beneath her was a monitor, with a dull green
cursor blinking on and off just enough to annoy her throughout the
broadcast. She had a pre-prepared spiel, one of her usual lines, good
to go.
Gareth, (she always made a point of throwing in first names on
television), it shows that some politicians are still getting to grips
with what social media actually is. These are the late adopters. All
these new platforms go through a period in which we establish the
rules, if you like, of how they should be used and how they fit into
the rules we already have. Like the first few years of email, when
people didnt fully understand about reply all or didnt realise that
things could take on a life of their own once youd hit send. Same
thing with Twitter. Laurie Donahue has just worked out that Twitter
is both a one-to-one communications platform and a broadcast platform, unfortunately in a highly public way. He might have thought
he was justified in lashing out at someone baiting him online, but he
was doing it in public, which is the problem.
I think therell be a few media advisers explaining to their bosses
the difference between a Reply and a DM tonight, said Males. He
turned back and faced the camera. Well, thats all weve got time for.
Well be back with more NVR at the same time tomorrow evening.

the other, who had short blonde hair, leaf through several pages
then slide her finger down a column.
Thanks, Ms Sharpe, have a lovely evening, said the blonde.
Nearby was a man wearing the same sort of outfit as the young
women, holding a camera. He glanced at Kat and resumed looking
bored. Damn. Still not famous enough to make the photographers
cut.
On the positive side, she was confronted almost immediately by
a waiter with a tray of drinks. She selected sparkling wine, with low
expectations, but it tasted surprisingly good for Event Liquid.
She looked around: there must have been at least a hundred
people present, probably more, in a rather narrow area in front
of a tall black curtain, behind which, presumably, the actual
awards ceremony would occur. There was Event Food circulating,
she could see, but she couldnt immediately spot anyone she knew
and to whom she could talk. She decided that the best strategy
was to advance purposefully into the crowd, offering smiles of
faux-recognition to several people who looked up from engrossed
conversations. Then she veered to the left so that she wouldnt
reach the curtain too quickly, which meant she almost walked into
Mike Jephcott, whod launched her book a year before. Jephcott
was barely a hundred and seventy centimetres tall, and she hadnt
spotted him in the throng.
Hey, Kat.
Hey, she said, delighted at encountering someone to whom she
could talk. Jephcott was a British software engineer whod moved to
Australia and launched two start-ups since arriving. Kat had been
on a couple of conference panels with him. How are things?
Oh, you know, not bad. You?
She looked over at an obese man talking to two quite attractive
women. Im good. Did you see our friend Phil over there?
Phil was Phil Desmond, or Diabetes Phil, a mutual and mutually
disliked acquaintance whose regular technology columns were the
subject of joking between her and Mike on Twitter.
I see hes brought both his girlfriends, said Mike.
