Description of Activity/Experience - Reflection

I ask the School Administrative Assistant who schedules substitute
teachers for a list of teachers who share a common 2 nd period planning
time with me. In reviewing the list I chose a new teacher at our school
who teaches history and also coaches JV basketball. Part of my rational
for this selection was a perception I have that the History Department
at our school is less technology oriented than others. The same is true
for our Science Department, and I am considering asking a physics
teacher with 2nd period planning to also accept my coaching.
I caught up with Whitt Jones, who teaches four classes of World History
to 10th Graders, and shares a 2nd period planning time with me, in the
hallway at the end of second period and ask him if he would be willing
to avail himself to me for instructional technology coaching. He quickly
expressed his agreement and interest in learning how to incorporate
more technology into his practice.
Today I met with our Principal, Mrs. Fine to conduct the GAPSS interview
and I mentioned my plans to coach one or two teachers. She agreed
with both teachers I had in mind, and confirmed that Whitt was a very
good choice.
At a basketball game this evening, I confirmed with Whitt that we could
meet briefly during second period on Tuesday or Wednesday of next
week.
Today I developed a Google Survey titled Your Technology Pedagogy for
use as an IT coaching tool. I shared the Survey with the other three
members of my ITEC 7460 Professional Learning Community.
For week one.
Today I met with Whitt and ask him questions about his curriculum and
the strategies and practices he uses for delivery of learning content and
assessments. I came to the conclusion that he has lots of room to grow
in the implementation of technology into his pedagogy. I explained the
purpose and intent of the Technology Pedagogy survey that I would be
sharing with him.
I ask Whitt if he was planning to do a review with his students today,
before the test is administered tomorrow. I was thinking of helping him
do a Kahoot review, but he advised that students would be sent home
with a study guide, but class would be focused on completion of the
French Revolution unit instruction.
I met with Whitt during planning and we discussed what he would be
covering next week; what content did he plan to cover; and how was he

planning to deliver it. He is planning to begin teaching about the

Industrial Revolution, but his plans have not been finalized. He told me
about his website with many of the resources he uses, and agreed to
share it with me. (http://whittjones.pbworks.com) I agreed to see if I
could find something that he uses for Industrial Revolution content and
find a web app for BYOT that would be compatible.

Whitts Technology Pedagogy survey results were analyzed, and with a

score of 2.92 out of five I am confident that I can effectively coach him
to a higher Level of Technology Implementation. Further analysis of his
different areas of strength and weakness will be summarized and
reviewed/discussed with him at our next meeting
For week two.
I sat down with Whitt during half of our planning period today and had a
conversation about his LoTI survey results and asked questions about
his interests in using technology in his teaching. We discussed the
possibility of using videos with embedded questions as a method of
flipping his classroom. I also shared several others ideas of web 2.0
tools that would be compatible with student BYOT. I left with a promise
to give him an example EdPuzzle video on the Industrial Revolution to
show him how it worked.
Before I left home for school this morning I found a YouTube Video and
created an EdPuzzle example for Whitt to experience. I sent the link to
him in this email:
Connect to https://edpuzzle.com/ and use Google to sign up as a new
student. Use your school Google account to register. Join a new class
and enter the class code dBnKXJ Begin the Turning Points in History Industrial Revolution Video Assignment.

I've set this up as an example Web 2.0 tool that you can use to "flip"
your classroom. This one requires that I grade the open response
questions, and I've set it up with a due date of tomorrow.
Let me know when you've had a chance to sign in and finish the
assignment.

PS: Good game against Newnan Monday, and congratulations on a
great season!
I saw Whitt briefly during our planning and told him about the link. I
explained that I didnt think it was a good video, and my questions were
not well written either, but I just wanted him to see the concept. I ask

him to check itout when he had the chance.

I checked EdPuzzle to see if Whitt had logged in and viewed the video.
He had not.
For week three.
I got an email advising that today and tomorrow would not be a good
time to meet because his planning periods were going to be very busy.
I went to Whitts room during planning and started the conversation
with an apology for pushing him to look at a useless example of an
EdPuzzle. I told him that I really wanted to help him implement things
that he was interested in. He explained that he liked the idea of flipping
his class with a video assignment that has embedded questions and
comments, but that he is very particular about the source and content
of any videos he uses. Whitt expressed frustration with lack of time to
work on the implementation. He said that some of the things he would
like to do might be better for him to work on during summer break. I
expressed my empathy with that and encouraged him to take focus on
one new tool at a time and expect to develop the strategies and
techniques over a long period of time.
Whitt came to my room during Planning and said he had registered as a
teacher on Kahoot and Zondle and had written review questions on
both for his students to use in studying for his Tribal Competitions
scheduled for his classes tomorrow. He logged in on a computer in my
lab and I help him get prepared to present a Zondle Challenge to his
students beginning next period.
During 5th period I got another teacher to cover my classroom for a few
minutes and I went to check in with Whitt to see how it was going. He
told me that it had gone very well and he was ready to start working on
his next one!
For week four. We had great success initially with Zondle, and Whitt is
now committed to using it regularly for reviews of DK1&2 items prior to
a formative assessment practice he uses called Tribal Games (a team
competition covering basic facts that are foundational to a particular
unit of study).
This week I created a Google Form survey for KSU coursework titled
What Technology Tools Interest You? I shared the survey with Whitt by
email with an explanation of my intentions to use his responses to
better determine what his greatest interests were, and how I might be
able to help him implement additional technology tools.
I stopped by Whitts room and ask him if hed seen the email with the
survey. He said that he had, but hadnt had a chance to respond yet,
but that he would soon.

I saw whit briefly in the hallway outside of the Registrars office during
planning and he told me that he had learned about a poster creation
tool called Canva, and that he was preparing to use it for a project
assignment with his students. He was going to use the new
Chromebooks assigned to his department. I reminded him again that I
wanted to see his responses to the questions about his interests.
Before school I ask Whitt if I could stop by and visit briefly during
planning. I wanted to personally invite him to join the Coursesites by
Blackboard Technology tools for Teachers Resource that Ive built, and
will introduce to the faculty with a video at Wednesdays Staff Meeting.
He said today was not a good day, maybe tomorrow.
For week the last seven weeks.
Thus ends my official KSU ITEC 7460 efforts at coaching Whitt in the
use of instructional technology. I will continue to offer help to him in
any way possible, and tomorrow I will extend that personal invitation to
him to join the 3T Coursesites Resource. I hope he will contribute a
module about the Canva App that he discovered. I believe that he has
started to discover how the right technology tools can enhance the
teaching/learning environment in his classroom. I am pleased that he
has opted to use the Chromebooks that are now available to him, and
that he is experimenting with new things on his own.
