Creating a Multimedia Project

TDT1 Task 3 Essay

Purpose and Objective
The purpose of this screencast is to provide instruction to junior high students so they
will know how to conduct a visual search of the online library catalog. A visual search provides
access to librarian created lists of books that will satisfy classroom teacher requirements for
specific assignments. The desired outcome or instructional objective for this lesson is that each
student will be more effective in their searching and thus have more time to engage with the text
and make a more purposeful book selection.
Audience
The audience for this multimedia presentation is students in grades 7-9 and their
classroom instructors at a suburban junior high school. The following demographic data
was obtained from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for the
state of Washington. 51.8% of the 800 students are male and 48.3% are female. The
majority of the students are white (66.1%). The next largest group is the 13.6% Hispanic
population. 8.6% of the students identify as Asian or Pacific Islander and 8.5% are Asian.
The remaining population consists of: 6.8% of the student who identify as 2 or more races,
4.0% black, 0.9% American Indian or Alaskan Native and 0.1% Native Hawaiian or Other
Pacific Islander. Other noteworthy data includes the 23.4% of students who receive free or
reduced lunch, the 13.4% of the population who qualifies for special education services and
3.3% of the students who are considered transitional bilingual.

Chosen Software and Rationale

This project will be recorded using the screen-casting feature in QuickTime Player. This
software was chosen because it is a standard feature on all student desktop and laptop machines
in the Northshore School District. Use of this software allows the instructor to provide content
instruction while modeling the use of a readily available multimedia tool. Additionally, this
program is very easy to use. The videos are easily uploaded to social media site such as Vimeo,
Facebook, YouTube or Flickr and if necessary converted to different formats. Staff and students
wanting a more sophisticated multimedia project can export a QuickTime movie into iMovie for
additional editing capabilities.
Process Used to Create the Multimedia Project
The necessary steps for creating this 1-2 minute multimedia project are listed below.
1. Select topic
2. Narrow the topic
3. Delineate the instructional steps
4. Practice the presentation
5. Ready to record, open QuickTime Player by locating it in the Applications folder.
Creator is given three options under the file button: New Movie Recording, New
Audio Recording, New Screen Recording. Select New Screen Recording. This
window appears.

6. Click on the red button to begin recording.

7. Next prompt explains that one will need to click on the screen to begin the actual
recording. Once that happens, the stop button will appear in the menu bar.
8. Record content.
9. Push stop button and view content. If no corrections are necessary, click on the red
button in the upper left hand corner. The user is then prompted to name the project
and save. If the take is clean and no editing is required, the movie is now ready to
share.
Conceptual Framework Discussion
The creation of a storyboard (Appendix A) for this project helped narrow the scope of the
content. The original plan created a six-minute video that was not appropriate for this task. By
returning to the storyboard, the creator was able to delete content, rearrange scenes and produce
a shortened, focused multimedia presentation. The use of a storyboard allows the creator to
outline all of the steps/scenes before beginning the recording. This helps to reduce the number of
takes and improve the overall flow of the project. It also ensured the inclusion of a distinct
introduction/purpose statement and closing statement.
