Introduction
No child should ever be the victim of abuse or neglect nor do they have to be...-

Linda C. Degutis, Dr., P.H., M.S.N (CDC).

Child abuse and neglect costs over $124 billion in the United States. Furthermore,
there was 579,000 non-fatal and 1,740 fatal cases of child maltreatment cases recorded
for a 12-month period for the United States (ACF).
Child abuse is a crime of secrecy. One child every 8 minutes is abused in Texas. There
were 238,706 children, in Texas, who received an investigation of child abuse in

2013(ACF). Of these, only about 65,000 were confirmed (CACTX). Over 5,000 of these
were in Dallas County alone (Jonathans Place). This is an issue that does not receive the
attention that it requires; in 2014, Texas ranked last in per capita spending on child-abuse
prevention (Jonathans Place Foundation).

Even though efforts are made to help these abused children, the children are
ushered through the program so quickly, most children are only able to stay for 30 to 90
days, that they are not truly rehabilitated from the experience they suffered. This facility
will allow Jonathans Place to house more children, which in turn will allow them to keep
the children longer and make sure they are more prepared to go back into the world
(Jonathans Place Foundation).
We, Mario Sinacola & Sons, will provide a safe haven through building an
expansion of Jonathans place. By creating extra housing, Jonathan's place will be able to
accommodate an additional 18 children. With the proper guidance and services from
Jonathans Place, these children that have been abused, neglected, and abandoned will be
given the potential to flourish safely.
This program is a step in the right direction for these children and will help us as a
society to prevent child abuse. With the partnership of Target and Ikea, we will receive
the supplies needed to help furnish the facility for the children. This will enable both
Target and Ikea to become involved with the project without incurring any direct costs.

Background
Child Abuse Rate

Today, 185 children in Texas will be victims of abuse. That is one child every 8
minutes. On average, Texas has more than 65,000 cases of child abuse confirmed each
year. Of these children 26% are not even old enough to attend kindergarten. One in every
four girls are sexually abused before their 18th birthday; one in every six boys are
sexually abused before their 18th birthday (CACTX). These statistics are based on
confirmed cases. In 2013, there were 238,706 children, in Texas, who received an
investigation of child abuse (ACF).
In 2012, 5,107 children were confirmed victims of child abuse or neglect in Dallas
County alone. Of these, 11 of the children died (Jonathans Place).
In 2014, Texas had the most fatalities from child abuse and neglect. Also, in 2014 Texas ranked
last in per capita spending on child-abuse prevention (Jonathans Place Foundation).

Abused & Abandoned Children

Children who are victims of abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment need help to process
what they have experienced in order to heal. Children who do not get this help cannot cope with
what has happened to them and generally resort to harmful activities later in life. These children
are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, become victims of domestic violence, and become
involved in some sort of criminal activity (DCAC).

Studies reveal that children who have been abused and neglected are 25% more likely to
experience problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, and
mental health problems. One third of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize
their own children (Jonathans Place Foundation).

Our History
Mario Sinacola Companies is based on a history of family values, dedication, hard work,
and forward thinking. These are the principles that Mario Sinacola Companies have been
operating on for almost 50 years, since 1966 (Mario Sinacola Co). Part of our company culture is
to give back to the communities that have helped to grow our company, especially to the children
of these communities. As stated on our company website:

Page |5

Because we are a family company, we focus on lending our expertise and resources to
projects that benefit children in the communities where we live and work (Mario Sinacola
Co).

Solution
We can help provide housing for the children in our communities. There are children in
all of the communities that we work in that are not fortunate enough to have some of the things
that many of us take for granted, like a roof over our head at night. Mario Sinacola and Sons can
provide the labor, equipment, and materials to provide housing for some of these children.

Teaming up with Jonathans Place we can provide a home for children in the Dallas - Ft. Worth
area that are in need of help. Jonathans Place is a non-profit organization in Dallas that provides
a safe and loving home to children who have been abused, abandoned, or neglected. The children
are offered specialized services to help them cope with what has happened to them (Jonathans
Place).

Jonathans Place is the only organization in Dallas County that provides residential services to
children under the age of 10. This shelter is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They provide a
soft bed, warm meals, and a team of professionals that help the children heal both emotionally
and physically. In addition to providing the necessities they provide extracurricular activities
such as school sports, trips to the Dallas Zoo and Perot Museum, and they also take the children
to attend shows at the AT&T Performing Arts Center (Jonathans Place Foundation).

The more children that Jonathans Place is able to help rehabilitate, the more that society will
benefit from the work done in these shelters. This project will help ensure that Jonathans Place
is able to continue to provide homes for these children and not have to turn any child away due
to being over-capacity. An additional goal of this project is to help raise awareness of child abuse
in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Page |6

Proposal
Do you want to leave an impact? We do. We are committed to our mission of helping
children in society and one way we will do this is by decreasing the overall number of abused
children and providing them a safe environment to stay and improve their quality of life.
Mario Sinacola in Frisco, TX proposes a creation of a new housing facility for the children at
Jonathans Place that have been abused, abandoned or neglected. As you know, Jonathans Place
provides a safe, loving home and specialized services for these children of abuse. However, they
do not have enough space for the amount of children in the Dallas Area who are in need. We
have created a registry through Ikea and Target to furnish the facility once construction is
complete. Our goal is to provide a facility creating more space for the children at Jonathans
Place. Should our project succeed and thrive as we have established it to, we intend to expand
the number of facilities for who we can provide housing for the large amount of children needing
a place to live. We also hope to create more of an awareness about this issue and the light in the
darkness that Jonathans Place provides. A crucial factor for the success of this design is
cooperation between all staff members and program elements and open communication between
all.

Values
We believe every child has the right to be loved, treasured, protected, and nurtured in a
safe and healthy environment. Mario Sinacola has strong values, and one of them is giving back
to the community. With this proposal, Mario Sinacola employees have the opportunity to be
highly involved in helping the children in the Dallas area who have been neglected and abused.
By providing a housing facility for children, Mario Sinacola will be living out its community
purpose. They specifically focus on lending their expertise and resources to projects that benefit
children in the community. The best way to reach employees for this project is by informing
them about Jonathans Place and the children suffering in Dallas.

Community
Mario Sinacola looks at this effort as a way to give back to the community through their
time, professional talent, and materials. We will partner with Target and Ikea to help provide
home furnishings to complete the basic living needs for the children. I personally worked with
these children and we have the opportunity to create hope for their future and allow them to
dream.

Page |7

Involvement
The most basic needs of abused children is love and a safe home. By partnering with
Jonathans Place we can make this happen. Also, with the registry from Target and Ikea we can
house these children by designing an environment that feels safe and secure. Mario Sinacola has
to consider the transportation of the pick-up and delivery. We will use our company trucks and
pay our workers labor costs. Using Mario Sinacola trucks will yield a smaller expense in
comparison to leasing trucks to deliver goods to Jonathans Place.
Target and Ikea employees will communicate to their customers about this social need. The
program requires commitment from a well-built team and vast awareness of the topic through
traditional communication.

Inspiration
Children with cigarette burns on their arms and legs. Toddlers starving because their
parents are not concerned with their needs. They are the children of abuse. Their stories are
endless and unacceptable. And they are fighting for survival in our community. We plan to build
hope for the children in the Dallas Fort Worth Area.
Ronald Regan said, There is no more fundamental test of a society than how it treats its children
(CFSM, 2006).

Page |8

Plan
The new housing expansion for Jonathans Place will be located in Garland, Texas. This
expansion is to be built on the existing six acres owned by Jonathans Place. This new facility
will house 18 children, but has the capacity for up to 25 children. The building is 4,150 square
feet and includes eight bedrooms, four full bathrooms, four half baths, common area, study
room, kitchen, and a laundry/storage room. The construction of this new facility will take nine
months to complete.
Execution
Building permits have been approved and purchased. The construction plan has been
finalized and will begin April 1, 2016. The blue prints, bill of materials, and labor cost estimates
for the expansion have been completed. The company has also provided beginning and end dates
for the construction.
Planning
We have met with Jonathans Place to ensure the new facility met the proper standards. A
building planner, a Mario Sinacola & Sons employee, has been assigned to the project from
beginning to end. The planner will ensure the future facility provides the expected outcome for
the children at Jonathans Place who will benefit from this contribution.

The project team consists of one person from Jonathans Place and two from Mario
Sinacola & Sons, a planner and a project manager, who are responsible for ensuring plans
and schedules are followed. The project manager will be the one to give the best
perspective of progress and delays. The selection process for these positions has been
completed and will be revisited in January 2016.

Second, we met with Ikea and Target representatives to discuss and finalize furnishing
and basic needs. Jonathans place will provide a list of home furnishings and needs for the new
facility. These will provide the basic necessities for the childrens rooms, bathrooms, and living
area.

This requires a team to include two representatives from Jonathans Place, Ikea, and
Target.
The team members have been identified and each will be responsible for collecting and
preparing items for pick up and/or delivery.

Page |9

Implementation
Jonathans Place and the company have agreed on a start date, April 1, 2016. The
delivery of building materials and equipment, safety measures, and selected labor force will
begin on this date. The project team has been provided with a set of blue prints and an outline of
activities, which include dates.

The blue prints will assist in monitoring the design and construction process
An outline of activities provides a general overview of construction and assists in
identifying progress and delays

The Benefit
This plan provides benefits by satisfying a social need in the area; providing children
with safe housing and the company becomes more involved with awareness, the organization,
and with future expansions. Also, by having partners, Ikea and Target, involved it helps to care
for this local organization and to build future relations. In addition to the good will that this
creates for the company and partnerships is they will be able to write off building materials and
furnishing that were truly donated, which will reduce taxes and save money for all companies
involved. The children are the most who will genuinely benefit from this expansion. The
expansion will allow Jonathan's Place to maximize their time using their resources to assist
children to cope with the trauma they have endured.

the following techniques:
1. Create eye catching bulletin board material using infographics that illustrate the shocking
issue of abused children in Dallas.
2. Employee e-mails sent by Ikea and Target as well as within Mario Sinacola so that each
company employee has the knowledge about the project as well as the need.
3. Rely on word-of-mouth, a more organic way of reaching employees, to generate
contributions for its on site project.

Conclusion
We, Mario Sinacola & Sons, are providing the material and labor needed to offer a safer
environment for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. The customers of Target and Ikea
will help to provide the furnishings for the facility. With the assistance of the Dallas Regional
Commerce we will be able to help Jonathans Place again in the near future with more
expansions in order to help remove child abuse in our community. In the case that the Dallas
Regional Chamber of Commerce is unable to help fund the project, Mario Sinacola and Sons will
continue to move forward with the project for Jonathans Place. Receiving the monetary help
from The Chamber will just allow us to provide additional assistance to these abused and
neglected children sooner. We are focused on providing and solving the needs and guidance for
these children to have a better future.
We stand by our commitment to the community which is to "focus on lending our
expertise and resources to projects that benefit children in the communities where we live and
work" (Mario Sinacola Co). With the expansion of Jonathan's place, we are confident that we are
contributing to help better our community. We want to create a positive lasting effect that will
change the lives of these children. Through this accomplishment, we will be able to help reduce
the abandoned, abused, and neglected children rates in the DFW Metroplex.
