SLINGING TUBULARS, SCAFFOLD, BEAMS, ETC

The correct procedure for fitting of slings to tubulars, drill pipe, scaffold tubes,
beams or any other regular shapes cargo by means of two slings is as follows.

Items must be of similar length, the same diameter or shape.

DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT PIPE OR BEAMS IN THE SAME BUNDLE.

Slings must be fitted 25% of the items total length in from the ends of the
item.
This will ensure level lift as the load will be balanced with 50% of the load
outboard of the slings and 50% inboard of the slings. See Pictures below.

Slings are fitted 25% in

from the ends and double
wrapped to ensure items
are secured during lifting

The sling must be double choked around the items to ensure that the items
are held together during lifting and transportation.

Ensure slings are of similar length and Safe working Load (SWL).

NOTE: The SWL of each sling is reduced by 20% when used in a choke
configuration.

Rigging & Lifting Dept (Escravos. Onne. Warri. PH)

Each sling to be capable of carrying 70% of the total weight of the load even
after choking.

Ensure that all sharp edges are covered to prevent damage occurring to the
slings during lifting operations.

Bundles must be placed on suitable dunnage (wooden blocks, large diameter

rope) when stored to prevent crushing of the slings.

Slings must be of suitable length to ensure sling angle does not exceed 90
degrees.

Where this in not possible, additional slings must be connected to choked slings
using suitable shackles.

Tubulars under 4 inch (100mm) diameter must be banded.

DO NOT FIT SLINGS 33% FROM THE ENDS

Slings are fitted

33% in from ends.
This cargo is not
balanced.
