Part II: Reflection

CANDIDATE REFLECTIONS:
(Minimum of 3-4 sentences per question)

1. Briefly describe the field experience. What did you learn about technology facilitation and
leadership from completing this field experience?
In this Action Plan, I looked at using social media, specifically Twitter, as a means for school-wide
communication, as well as a means for student engagement, professional connection, and public
relations. I had previously seen examples of schools who did exactly this and, though they were
smaller schools or districts, they had found it to be a positive and educational experience. I
learned that technology is yet another instructional tool and its level of educational relevance
depends upon the person using the tool. Thus, I sought a way to have a simple product that
offered much flexibility in its ability to be applied in an educational setting.
2. How did this learning relate to the knowledge (what must you know), skills (what must you
be able to do) and dispositions (attitudes, beliefs, enthusiasm) required of a technology
facilitator or technology leader? (Refer to the standards you selected in Part I. Use the
language of the PSC standards in your answer and reflect on all 3knowledge, skills, and
dispositions.)
Researching and planning this Action Plan showed me that in order to successfully implement it, I
must be sure to have credible research on hand in order to gain more buy-in from administration
as well as teachers. Thereafter, I found that I would also have to ensure that the plan allowed for
teachers and administrators to model effective use of technology for use in the classroom,
especially where Twitter was concerned. Furthermore, I found that the most important skill was
ingenuity where in this relatively unlimited resource (aside from the 140 character limit),
worthwhile connections could be made between students and thought leaders that would be
challenging to execute without the use of social media.
3. Describe how this field experience impacted school improvement, faculty development or
student learning at your school. How can the impact be assessed?
Since it was summertime, I was unable to actually implement this field experience on real students
and real teachers in a real school, however I have used it with my own students and colleagues
before. That, paired with discussions I had had with my principal let me know that this type of
social media integration was actually quite feasible for my school. The impact of this could be
assessed by looking at analytics and stats to see how many people are engaging with a topic.
Luckily, sometime this summer, Twitter issued an update where you can actually see stats on
individual posts as well as with regard to a specific handle. Thankfully, this would be a great way
to show a staff how such an initiative is really taking off.
