Course Description
Welcome to literature from around the world! English II Honors goes beyond our borders
and introduces students to a wide range of authors who share fascinating experiences
from across the globe. Besides analyzing literature, poetry, and nonfiction text, this
course will focus on career and college readiness including higher level vocabulary in
preparation for the ACT and SAT college entrance examinations. Written expression will
be emphasized using MLA formatting along with proper grammar usage. Students will
conduct formal research and present this information both orally and in writing. This indepth exploration of English is designed to be both intriguing and challenging as students
meet the high expectations of English II Honors.

Student Learning Outcomes
Analyze a variety of text types evaluating for purpose and relevance.
Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and
style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
Conduct short as well as more sustained research on focused questions,
demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and
collaborations expressing ideas clearly and persuasively.
As part of the North Carolina New Schools instructional framework, each student at
Nesbitt Discovery Academy will read, write, think, and talk in every class every day.

Formative and summative assessments are a part of every class at Nesbitt Discovery
Academy; final grades are based on a ten point system as follows:

Grading Scale:
90 100: A
80 89: B
70 79: C
60 69: D
0 59: F
The final course grade is based on the above grades (75%) and the North Carolina End of
Course examination (25%).
Attendance Policy
Students are allowed only five (5) absences per semester. To be counted present in a
class, the student must be in class for 2/3 of the class period. Students are responsible for
making up any days past the allotted 5 absences per semester. For information about
excused and unexcused absences, please refer to the student handbook.
Make-up Policy
The following procedure will apply to all courses:
After any absence, it will be the students responsibility to check with his/her teacher outside of
class time for work missed and to schedule a time to make up all work including tests.
Projects and work assigned before absences should be turned in as soon as student returns to
school.
If a student is absent for one (1) day, he/she will have two (2) days to make up homework, missed
assignments and tests assigned during his/her absence.
If a student is absent two (2) or three (3) days, he/she will have four (4) days to make up
homework, missed assignments and tests during his/her absence.
If a student is absent four (4) or more days, he/she will meet with each teacher for an individual
arrangement for all make-up work.
For more information on attendance make-up if absent for more than six (6) days, please refer to
the student handbook.

Classroom Expectations
All homework is due at the beginning of class on the assigned date. Except in
the case of an excused absence, no late work will be accepted.
Nesbitt Discovery Academy follows PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports)
guidelines in accordance with the US Department of Education. All students are expected
to:

individuals are not.
Listen, participate, and treat others courteously and kindly. All cell phones and other
portable devices are to remain off while you are in this classroom, unless permission is
given by the teacher.
BE RESPONSIBLEBring your completed homework and all required materials to class
every day.
BE READYWhen the period begins, you are expected to be in your seat and ready to
work; you should come to class prepared and eager to participate.
