General Comments/Questions/Commendations/Recommendations
During the time at the ESL camp for Jefferson County, I was able to
observe a SIOP lesson taught by Laura Leigh Holland. She managed
and highlighted the components of the SIOP model in an efficient and
timely manner. We planned this lesson together, so I was intrigued on
how she interpreted the lesson in her own way. I adapted the lesson for
my 5th and 6th graders, but she was teaching 3rd and 4th graders. The
approach was very different, since a lot of the learners needed more
support for their language skills. She was able to adapt to meet the
need of her own learners, which I think it crucial for each and every
educator.
Throughout this observation, I saw each component thrive within
the lesson. This lesson was in the science content area, but it was also
a reading lesson too! I was able to see both of these aspects shine
through the content. Laura Leigh did an excellent job at previewing the
lesson and building background knowledge of the content. She also
was wonderful at making the objectives and expectations very clear to
the students. The students clearly knew what they lesson was going to
be about, as well as what activities would take place. One of the

aspects that I am going to adopt into my own practice is her modeling
technique. She is able to explain activities in a very precise and helpful
manner. This is something I forget to do in my own classroom. I explain
things, and then move right along. I need to take more time to make
sure the tasks are manageable and clear, so the learners will succeed.
Overall, this lesson was excellent. Laura Leigh and I discussed ways
to incorporate more hands-on materials, but that was the only
recommendation that followed this lesson. I thought it was an excellent
SIOP lesson plan, and I hope to tailor my strategies with some I learned
from this one. Great job, Laura Leigh!
