In visions of heaven the angels say, Holy, holy, holy
The closer you get to God the more you see your own sin.
I. God is perfectly holy Hab 1:12-13.
A. Holiness is characterized by the absence of sin.
1. He has declared a judgment on sin: Rom 6:23.
2. He has brought temporal judgments on the sinful in this world.
3. He has prepared a place of eternal punishment for those who
persist in their sin (Heb 9:27; Rev 20:15).
Can a holy God look at sin? Yes (ie., Prov 15:3; Jer 16:17).
This Heb word has the meaning of seeing with favor.
B. Holiness is characterized by the presence of pure virtue and active
righteousness.
Every other characteristic of God finds its strength in His holiness.
This is the beauty of holiness Ps 29:2; 96:9.
C. Holiness is communicated to things by the principle of separation.
God considers these things holy because He has set them apart for
His use.
II. Believers are to be perfecting holiness 2 Cor 7:1.
A. Believers are helped to be holy.
1. We have the command to be holy 1 Pet 1:15-16.
2. We have the new nature that allows us to be holy Eph 4:24
3. We have the Holy Spirit to teach and convict us Jn 16:8-13.
4. We are chastened by God to be holy Heb 12:10
B. Believers must work themselves to be holy.
1. Filth of the flesh and spirit = everything within & without that
defiles us. See Matt 5:27-28; 1 John 3:15.
2. It is not enough that we see less sin; God needs to see less sin (1
Sam 16:7).
