Reflection: Facilities Audit
I audited the middle school where I did most of my internship
experience last summer as well as my field experiences for this class this
semester. The school was built in 2010 and is the newest school in its
county. The building consists of two floors. The first floor houses the main
office, guidance offices, cafeteria, and gym. The instructional hallways are
split into two for 6th grade classes, computer lab, reading areas, and elective
classrooms. The second floor houses the 7th and 8th grade instructional
hallways.
The school was built to accommodate approximately 900 students and
60 staff members. The school includes general and specialty classrooms and
features laboratories, media centers, a gym, common areas, and
administrative spaces on every hallway. The campus includes athletic fields
on either side of the building as well as tracks, a bus canopy, large parking
areas, and full landscaping.
The project is a LEED Silver building, certified by the U.S. Green
Building Council. The sustainable features include stormweather
management measures, Forest Stewardship Council certified wood, and a
green housekeeping plan.
Every classroom has a SMART board, document camera, and full
wireless connections. The county has a 1:1 laptop initiative, so all students,
teachers, and administrators have a laptop they have access to 24/7. There
is an on-site technology director as well as an Instructional Technology
Resource Teacher who works with the faculty and staff.
