Discovieres have the power to transform indiviuals and their perceptions about

the world to a certain extent. This notion is seen in Ivan OMahoneys social
realism and hybrid documentary - reality TV show Go back to where you came
from and Shaun Tans picture book The arrival.
Both the planned and unexpected revelations of the 6 ordinary Australians along
with the characters in the picture book present how discoveries have the
capabilities to inspire us to perceive ourselves, others and the wider world in a
more convoluted manner.
In both texts empathy is built for the refugees and immigrants and both the texts
gives an insight into the experiences the characters go though and we are able
to construct an appreciation of their struggles and the dangers they are escaping
from allowing the discovery of new ideas and perceptions. In the TV series, Raye
Coleby, a retired social worker from SA, is presented as __________. Through the
connection built with the ______ family, emotional discovery aids Raye in
widening her view on the wider society. (include technique camera angles stuff)
highlights the power of discoveries in humanising both ourselves and the
perceptions of others.
Likewise, in the picture book, the man undergoes a similar transition of thought
as Raye.
