Research Question: How Have Children in Foster Care Become Easy Victims of Human Sex
Trafficking?

Beam, Cris. To the End of June: The Intimate Life of American Foster Care. Houghton Mifflin
Harcourt, 8. 336. Print.

While the foster care system in America is in place to protect children, the system
impacts many lives. Following children placed in foster care, we are able to see the
experience results in a mixed of feelings. Cris Beam asks, Who Decides the Correct Way
to Raise a Child? With an ultimate goal of returning theses children to their biological
family, it can leave a child in the system for many years. The system is over populated
and the system in need of repair, the children and families end up paying a steep price.

Cris Beam spent years researching and following children while they were in the foster
care system. Along with her personal experiences, has allowed Beam to not only be a
reliable source but stay unbiased. This book allows others to see all sides of the foster
care system and how children fell lost and alone. Many of these children leave looking
for a stable place to call home. This books goal, was to allow others to see all points of
view, just how one childs life can impact so many others while in the system.

Powell 2
This book was very helpful, it allowed me to see all sides of the foster care system. While
showing the effects the system has these children. Using some of the childrens stories I
can strengthen my main two topics. This book just strengthened my knowledge on the
foster care system.

Chisolm-Straker, Makini. "Human Trafficking." Human Trafficking. Web. 9 July 2015.

Emergency healthcare providers need to be able to identify victims and get them the help
they need it. This information for providers is available to help in the process. From the
background of human trafficking, to resources for health care providers, and getting the
help for the victims. Emergency room providers are a key to identify and helping victims
of sex trafficking. This informational guideline will help in this process.

This information is very useful for whats being done point in my research. This source is
a useful resource for health care works unlike my other sources that were data collects or
stories of children in the foster care system. This information supports my Whats Being
Done point of my paper. Seeing firsthand what available to health care providers, has
lead me to realize that others are trying to protect these children.

This source was very helpful in finding other links for my research. Opening up more
resources for my research helps build the main points of my research. This information
can be used in my research in all main points to back up all other resources. This
information has helped my see all resources available to health care providers and how
each person plays a role in these childrens lives.

Craft, Carrie. "The Top Reasons Children Enter the Foster Care System." About Parenting. Web.

Children are placed into the foster care system for many reasons. This article gives the
top reasons that children are placed into the system. From, physical and sexual abuse,
neglect, medical neglect, parents incarceration, abandonment, truancy, death and although
rare, voluntarily placed. The article gives some insight to reasons children are placed that
are not abuse. All of these reasons seem to be traumatic events for these children.

Although this article is short, it gives some useful background for my main topic. Why
are children already seeking love before entering the foster care system? The author,
Carrie Craft, is a foster care expert giving reliable data in her article. This article gives
readers the top reasons children are placed into the foster care system.

I found this source useful and helps me show the trauma a child can face before entering
into the foster care system. These top reasons allow the reader to understand what these
children have endured. Although, many of these reasons are from abuse the article
allowed me to see other reasons.

Flowers, R. Barri. "Street Teens Often Turn to Prostitution to Survive." Street Teens. Ed. Dedria
Bryfonski. Detroit: Greenhaven Press, 2012. Opposing Viewpoints. Rpt. From
"Prostitution-Involved Youth." Street Kids: The Lives of Runaway and Thrownaway
Teens. Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Company, Inc., 2010. 115-129. Opposing Viewpoints
in Context. Web. 7 July 2015.
Many of todays homeless children have left abusive homes or have been tossed aside
and have chosen to live on the streets. Within a few weeks these children are forced into
prostitution to survive. Once they have done this, many become victims of sexual
predators, pimps or pornography. Many of these youth are arrested for violations of the
law.

Powell 4

The author, Barri Flowers shows how homeless children are in one way or another forced
into prostitution and the path that follows. Flowers, has data to support his article and I
feel the article is reliable, while not being bias. This article builds on my research.

This article helped build a foundation, showing what can happen to children living in an
unstable environment. It also shows that children often chose to run away looking for a
better life. Reading this article helped strengthen my understanding of why a child would
be vulnerable to an unhealthy relationship.

McAdoo, Lee Ann. "Foster Care System Traps Children into Vicious Cycle of Sex Abuse."
Info wars. 1 Aug. 2013. Web. 7 July 2015.

Children in foster care go missing daily and proper steps to getting them back are not
being done. Although these children may leave voluntarily. They are then held against
their will and become victims of sex trafficking. Child welfare staff need to be educated
on the signs of these predators. They also need to report to the national database not
waiting to see if they come back. Since 2003, task forces along with a nation photo
database have been focusing on people behind this sexual exploitation of children.

This article had many research facts that were very helpful. While my other resources
seem to detail the reason behind these children not feeling safe, this article shows the
current attempt to prevent this children falling through the cracks. The article was very
reliable and stated information shared at the current Ensure Justice Conference. There
were not bias options, just facts in the article. The goal of this article was to show the
need for immediate change in the foster care system.

Powell 5
This article gives me solid facts. Education among child welfare works in preventing sex
trafficking. While the facts back my education of a problem, it also shoes some of the
solutions to this problem. This article can outline prevention solutions that need to be put
into place and followed. As I read more and more data on the foster care problems it
makes me want to help even more.

Menzel, Margie. "Foster Care Sex Trafficking: Pimps, Labor Contractors Targeting Youth in
Florida Foster Care System." WPTV. The News Service of Florida, 24 Jan. 2013. Web. 7
July 2015.

State agencies in Florida are warning that young people in the foster care system are
being targeted. Although, new laws help victims, there is still a lot of work needed to
prevent sex trafficking. These children are vulnerable. Most of these children are
searching for love, protection and a way out. These agencies are looking for ways to
educate others about the issue. They want to include the National Hotline number for
trafficking on signs throughout the state. Making a Good Samaritan aware of the issue
and how to report it as a useful resource. Education is a key to stop this abuse.

The Department of Children and Families and Department of Juvenile Justice in Florida
are valuable resources. This article adds more support of the importance of education for
prevention. The information was reliable and showed no bias from the author. The
articles goal, is to inform others of the growing problem in sex trafficking and how
education can save theses children.

Having a local state resource was very helpful in my research. Education is the key to
prevention and saving these children. This article gave me another sub topic for my
paper. It also helps me get some better idea of ways to prevent that everyone can do, not
just state employees.

"Publications - Children's Rights." Children's Rights. 27 Sept. 2012. Web. 9 July 2015.

This publication from Childrens Rights gives statics on children in the foster care system
and how these children deserve better. Childrens Rights are helping abused and
neglected children in foster care. They are working on reform on the foster care system.
This publication shows what the problems are and how they can be changed.

This publication fits into every topic of my research. Although my other sources gave a
variety of topics this on seemed to follow my outline. The information is very reliable
and will help back up my other sources for my paper. This publication is very objected in
finding the help these children need. The goal of this publication is to inform its readers
of the need to reform the foster care system.

This publication was very helpful. Using this as a resource for my topic, Prevention. This
will help show the need for helping theses children so they do not become victims of
trafficking. Showing that reform in the foster care system can prevent further abuse for
these children, has further increased my knowledge of cause and effect of the system

Rojas, Rick. "As Arizona Struggles to Fix Foster System, Children Suffer the Consequences."
The New York Times. The New York Times, 24 Mar. 2015. Web. 9 July 2015.

In a recent lawsuit against Arizona State Foster Care System, advocacy groups claim
children are pulled from one abusive situation only to be put into another abusive
environment. Asking for awareness and a change for these children, the lawsuit has

Powell 7
started the change in Arizona. A new state agency opens up a spectrum of social services.
Although the process is slow and just a start, getting these children the help they need
will be worth it. This article shows the need for reform and the children that are falling
through the cracks and are suffering.

Seeing how Arizona was responding to the need for change was very useful. This article
supports my main ideas for prevention. This articles information was reliable and no bias
was shown in the article. The goal of this article was to show, how advocates must fight
for children in foster care since they have no one to help them fight.

The source helped me understand ways that can change the system. Prevention of further
abuse for these children is a major problem. Understanding what these children go
through helps we understand how easily they can fall victim to others. This article has let
me see a new approach to changing the foster care system on state levels.

Sealey, Geraldine. "Exposing America's Ugly Child Sex Secret." ABC News. ABC News
Network, 13 Dec. 2015. Web. 9 July 2015.

Homeless children fall victim to sexual predators every day. These runaway children are
trapped and Americans do not think there is a problem, allowing for this abuse to
continue. With the average age of position starting at 14 years, these children are entering
position to survive life on the streets. Advocates are trying to help these children before
they enter a world they cannot get out of. Once they enter prostitution many cannot leave.
Those who are arrested have a criminal history making it hard to find a regular job and
get sucked back in by their pimps. In recent years these pimps have faced harder laws but
the customers, who are the reason for the demand, do not seem to suffer any more than a
slap on the wrist.

Powell 8
This report was linked to another source from my research and has been very useful. The
information is backed by data, making it reliable. The author does not seem to show any
bias opinion. The goal of this article is to open Americas eye and see sex trafficking is a
problem in America not just other countries.

This source was very helpful in showing that Americans are still unaware of the problems
theses homeless children will face. The article fits under my main topic, The Problem.
This article sheds light into the truth of American streets and the survival methods theses
children have to take while living on the streets.

Tan, Thanh. "Protecting Foster Kids from Sex Trafficking." The Seattle Times. 19 Feb. 2014.
Web. 7 July 2015.

Children in the Washington State Foster Care System are falling victim to sex trafficking.
Many of these children run away looking for a better life, only to become a victim. The
foster care system needs to help, both before the children go missing and have more
people to help find them after they go missing. These children once they are found need
treatment and stability.

Although this article emphasizes the problem in the foster care system, it does not have
its data supported. With that being said, the article was not that helpful in my research.
Understanding that Washington is having the same problems as the nation just conformed
the need for help and soon. The article was much objected. The goal of this article, was to
show the readers the need to repair the system.

This article helped support my research. Without the supported facts, I do not believe it
will fit in my paper. I can use this article as a building block for supported information of

Powell 9
other resources. This along with all my research has opened my eyes to the problems in
the foster care system nationwide.
