Adjusting the Cutter Spindle Bearing
‘The spindle of the vertical spindle head has an amply dimensioned tapered portion which is carried
in a bronze bushing serving to absorb radial loads; thrust loads are absorbed by sets of adjustable
ball bearings which also keep the spindle axis centered.
Where prolonged use of the vertical spindle head has resulted in an increase in bearing play, take
up any excessive play by following this procedure :
Use clamp 4 to clamp the spindle in position. Drive out tapered pin 2, then unscrew ring 1 and
remove draw-in bar 3. Loosen the two nuts 6 and, while retarding the motion of the spring barrel
with one hand, pull thé gear wheel shaft 5 out of the spindle head. Upon clamp 4 being loosened,
the spindle and the bearing sleeve can be removed in a downward direction.
Bearing play is adjusted with the aid of the two lock nuts 7. After adjustment has been made,
firmly tighten the nuts against one another and lock them in position by bending over the inter-
posed tab washer.
‘The bearing can be so adjusted that with a tight radial bearing arrangement play amounts to
maximum 0.0004" (0.01 mm ), whereby the axial bearing play may not exceed 0.0008” ( 0.02 mm).
If in this way the radial bearing arrangement cannot be made tight, re-set adjusting collar 8,
whereby a decrease in the thickness of the collar by 0.004’" (0.1 mm) reduces the radial bearing
play by 0.0004" ( 0.01 mm ).
‘The disassembly of the cutter spindle required for this re-adjustment is accomplished by simply
unscrewing the two lock nuts 7 with tab washer and removing the cutter spindle from the bearing
sleeve.
Before inserting the bearings, introduce a-small amount of grease into them, bearing in mind,
however, that any excessive quantity of grease will tend to cause overheating at high spindle
speeds. x
‘The guide bearing of the bevel gear can be adjusted by means of nut 9; care should be taken to
avoid any excessive preload, as this would damage the ball bearings.
When re-assembling the parts, care should be taken to see that the key 10 is engaged in the spin-
dle keyway (for tensioning of the return spring, please refer to page 24).Yiitel ee
