Students will be given simple instructions on counting objects using one-to-one

correspondence given an example over three times.

Common Core
Counting and Cardinality
* Know number names and the count sequence.
Count to tell the number of objects.
Compare numbers.
PK: Prekindergarten Domain - PK.CC1: Counting and Cardinality - Count to 20.
Standard PK.CC.3: Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities
to 10; connect counting to cardinality. Standard PK.CC.3A: When counting
objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with
one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one
object. PK.CC1: Count to answer how many? questions about as many as 10
things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as any as 5 things in
a scattered configuration; given a number from 1 10, count out that many
objects. PK.CC5: Identify whether the number of objects in one group is more,
less, greater than, fewer, and/or equal to the number of objects in another group,
e.g., by using matching and counting strategies
(up to 5 objects).
This lesson will focus on vocabulary acquisition. Students will learn new words such as more/less

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation)
First, I would begin by asking students who here has ever been to the grocery
store? Then I would ask, what are some things you see or do at the grocery
store? Then I would say, Well today we are going to go shopping in our
classroom grocery store and find different food and play a counting game!
Instruction/Mini Lesson
- First introduce the number line to class. Counting from numbers 1-20 on number line using
ruler to guide counting process.
- Then I would ask, What are some foods you buy at the grocery store? Then I would draw the
picture of each item on chart paper and label the item accordingly.
- Then I would reach for pretend play food items and introduce different foods to the class,
labeling and identifying each food item.
- We will then count multiple items of the same foods (ex: 3 bananas , 4 oranges, 5 broccoli
etc.)
- We will then work as a whole group to complete activity
Guided Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or independently)
- Students will be instructed to sit on the rug in the meeting area.
- Students will be instructed to show ready bodies (sitting attentively)
- Students will be given the opportunity to count items independently and as a group while
sitting on the rug.
- Students will learn the vocabulary word (more/less) during whole group activity given
examples.
Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)
After whole group activity students will be instructed to go to their desk and draw
different fruits and vegetables on construction paper and count how many items
they have drawn using one-to-one correspondence. We also review the new
vocabulary words from activity nutritional benefits of different foods in the

with another classmate to follow
- place items/materials within distance reach
and complete step-by-step
directions effectively.
Students will be instructed to create their own Grocery Store using art materials and supplies. Then
students will share their drawings to the peers, counting aloud the number of foods they have included
in their grocery store drawings.
