In my words, LMS is a software that provides online learning.It is used in training by companies or in
Distance Education institutes. LMS used only for educational purpose is called Educational learning
management systems. (ELMS).In the EMLS category there are proprietary LMS such as the one
University of Maryland uses (so the one we use) that are made by the Institutions themselves and the
open source (software build by commercial builders)
In this Handout , we are going to take a look of how an open source LMS functions, and given the trends
towards today LMS are heading to, we are going to make an comparative analysis with other LMS.
1)Functionality
The LMS that we have decided to explore is Talentlms. From the website home,

The different rubrics can be manipulated by the administrator whose windows

allows us to choose course name , category, description, price of the course, time limit, certification. The
course can be built or bought from the Marketplace.
The administrator windows also allows to add users; (users can be set in group)
The import/export rubric allows to import all softwares:worksheets, videos tools etc needed to build the
course.

The functionality of Talentlms as it is summarized in the Talentlms Home page include availability in the
Cloud, so no need to upload, building e-learning courses in minutes, customize domain, logo,and theme,
make analytics report that makes sense, mobile friendly because it can be used on many mobile devices.
2) LMS trends
As we have seen, the trends today in Distance Education is that learning is not longer the transfer of
knowledge by by one mastermind- teacher powering the students, but global approach of learning where
students can not only use resources available for them in the LMS but also all around the world (virtual
classrooms) through the Internet. This bring some vendors to even incorporate social media tools such as
Facebook, Twitter into LMS, feature that Telentlms does not have. In regard to Talentlms the incorporation
of virtual classroom is made by importing these third parties softwares. One of the LMS software that we
have found with virtual classrooms tools incorporated is Pearson Open class

We could not create username and password due to obligation to set it by the institution we are now study
within, but we have listened to the video of Pearson OpenClass which meanly states that Pearson
OpenClass is a revolutionary tool that goes beyond LMS. The presenter declares that LMS is dead and
that in Pearson OpenClass all collaborative tools that allows interaction with the World are integrated in
on platform in the LMS. Here is some snapshots of the video

3)Conclusion

The debate, we believe, will goes on as whatever virtual classrooms should be incorporated in LMS.
Some do not see the idea very well and go to picture it as bringing friend list into a distance education
platform. Others see it as a way to use all tools available today to favor Education.

Talentlms
is used
for both
institutions and corporates. It also supports SCORM

and TinCan (xAPI) , tools that allow to save money since others LMS can work on
Talentlms. Sorry for not giving an extendable list of the functionnalities of Talentlms. I
have just listed some.
