27June1998at20:30MST,aweekaheadofHongKongInternationalAirportandintimeforthe1998CommonwealthGames.Thefirst
domesticarrivalwasMalaysiaAirlinesflightMH1263fromKuantan(KuantanAirport)at07:10MST.Thefirstinternationalarrivalwas
MalaysiaAirlinesflightMH188fromMalInternationalAirportat07:30MST.ThefirstdomesticdeparturewasMalaysiaAirlinesflight
MH1432toLangkawi(LangkawiInternationalAirport)at07:20MSTthefirstinternationaldeparturewasMalaysiaAirlinesflightMH84
toBeijing(BeijingCapitalInternationalAirport)at09:00MST.[4]

Inauguration
Theinaugurationoftheairportwasmarkedwithproblems.Aerobridgeandbayallocationsystems
brokedown,queuesbuiltupthroughouttheairportandbaggagehandlingbrokedown.Bagswere
lostandtherewerewaitsofoverfivehours.[5]Mostoftheseissueswereremediedeventually,
thoughbaggagehandlingsystemwasplaguedwithproblemsuntilitwasputupforacomplete
replacementtenderin2007.
Theairportsufferedgreatlyreducedtrafficwiththegeneralreductionineconomicactivitybrought
aboutbytheEastAsianfinancialcrisis,SARS,birdfluepidemic(Avianflu),theglobalfinancial
crisisandtheswineflupandemic.1998sawareductionofpassengernumbersassomeairlines,
includingAllNipponAirways(recommencingon1September2015),BritishAirways(resumedon
28May2015),Lufthansa(laterreinstated)andNorthwestAirlines,terminatedtheirlossmaking
servicestoKLIA.KLIA'sfirstfullyearofoperationsin1999,initsPhaseOnemanifestation
(capacityof25millionpassengersperyear),sawonly13.2millionpassengers.[6]Passenger
numberseventuallyincreasedto21.1millionin2004and23.2millionin2005thoughshortof
theoriginallyestimated25millionpassengersperyearby2003.

ThePassengerTerminalComplex(PTC)wasbuiltwithanemphasisonallowingnaturallightintothe
building.Thus,thereisahugeexpanseofglassthroughoutthebuilding,andthespectacularroofhas
cutoutsfornaturallighttofilterin.ThePTCcomprisesthreebuildingstheMainTerminalBuilding,
theSatelliteBuildingandtheContactPier.Besidesthe80roomhotelattheSatelliteBuilding,thereis
a422room5starSamaSamaHotelKLIA,afiveminute(indoor)walkaway.Shoppingspotsare
availableinanareaencompassing85,000squaremetres.Currently,theretailspaceattheKuala
LumpurInternationalAirportstandsat67,000squaremetres(720,000sqft).Theairportoperator
planstoincreasetheretailspaceto105,300squaremetres(1,133,000sqft),an62.2%increaseinretail

TheinitialpassengergrowthwasbelowaverageduetoAsianFinancialCrisisandtheoutbreakof
severeacuterespiratorysyndrome(SARS)epidemicin2003andtheairportfailedtoreachitstarget
capacityof25millionpassengersperannum(beforetheinclusionoflowcostcarrierterminal)by
2004.However,therecoveryofMalaysia'seconomyboostedKualaLumpurInternationalAirport's
passengermovements,andtheairportsawsignificantgrowthintraffic,hittingthe25million
passengermarkin2007.In2013,theairportsawamonumentalincreaseinpassengertrafficto47
millionpassengers.[13]

ThecontactpieristherectangularshapedterminalthatisconnectedtotheKLIAMainTerminalBuilding(MTB).Itservesasthedomestic
terminalforMalaysiaAirlines.Someinternationalflightsarehandledthereaswell.Previouslyitusedtocatertolowcostcarriers'
passengers.Atthenorthsideofthepier,itcanonlyaccommodatenarrowbodiedaircraft.Incontrast,thesouthsideofthecontactpiercan
accommodateBoeing737andBoeing747orsimilarsizedaircraft.

ThegatesinMainTerminalBuilding'scontactpierhasalphabetprefixofAandBfordomesticflights,whichisaccessiblefromdomestic
departuresonLevel3wherepassengersdescendaftersecuritycheck,andGandHforinternationalflights.BasicallyGatesG&Hare
sharingthesameboardingloungeasGatesA&B,whereafterboardingandsecondarysecuritycheck(beforeboardingaircraft)passengers
descendintothesameboardingloungewiththedoorsfor"A&B"onlevel3sealedoffforinternationalflights.Fordomesticflights,the
stairstoaccess"G&H"aresealedoffinstead.

SatelliteterminalA
The176,000squaremetres(1,890,000sqft)satellitebuildingaccommodatesinternationalflights
departingandarrivingatKLIA.PassengershavetotraveltothesatellitebuildingviatheAerotrain.
Thereisawidearrayofdutyfreeshopsandprestigebrandboutiquesinthesatellitebuilding.This
includesinternationalbrandssuchasBurberry,Harrods,Montblanc,SalvatoreFerragamoand
recently,MangohasopeneditsfirstboutiqueatanairportintheAsianregion.Amongall
internationallabelsavailablewithintheterminal,someboutiquessuchasHarrodsareonlyavailable
intheairport.Anumberofrestaurantsandinternationalairlines'loungesareavailableaswellasan
AirsideTransitHotel.
Withintheterminal,wirelessinternet(WiFi)isprovidedfreeofcharge.Theterminalalsohas
prayerrooms,showersandmassageservice.Variousloungeareasareprovided,someincluding
children'splayareasandmovielounge,broadcastingmovieandsportchannels.[17]Theterminal
alsofeaturesanaturalrainforestinthemiddleoftheterminal,exhibitingtheMalaysianrainforests.

hasa350,000squarefeetofnetlettablespacespanningover4levels,offeringafreshairport

(ERL)(alsoknownasKLIAEkspres),withallottedpickupanddropoffareasforcoaches,taxis,
rentedvehiclesandprivatetransportation.[25]

parkinglotsatBlocksAandBandanother5,500lotsatcarparkD.Shuttlebusesareavailableto

Lowcostcarrierterminal(LCCT)
The36,000squaremetres(390,000sqft)Lowcostcarrierterminal(LCCT)wasopenedatKualaLumpurInternationalAirporton23
March2006tocaterforthegrowingnumberofusersoflowcostairlines,especiallythepassengersofMalaysia's"nofrills"airline,
AirAsia.Theterminalwasdesignedandbuiltinaccordancetothelowcostcarrierbusinessmodel,withlimitedterminalamenities.As
requestedbythelowcostairline,theterminaldoesnotprovideaerobridges,noraretheretransferfacilities,railconnections,andother
facilitiesprovidedinafullfledgedterminal.
TheLCCTwaslocatedontheoppositesideoftheapronfromtheMainTerminalBuilding(MTB),withcloseproximitytotheaircargo
area.Theterminalunderwentexpansionin2008toaccommodateexponentialgrowthoflowcosttravel.[30]Followingtheopeningofklia2,
thenewterminalbuiltforlowcostairtravel,theLCCTceasedoperationson9May2014andalllowcostcarrierflightsarenowoperating
outofklia2.
TheAirAsiacorporateheadoffceisintheLCCT.[31]Theairlineplanstomoveitsheadofficetoanewfacilityconstructedatklia2

TerminalBuilding(MTB)andtheSatelliteBuilding.Each250personcapacitytraincantransport
3,000passengersperhourineachdirectionatupto56km/h(35mph).Thesethreecardriverless
trainsrunonelevatedrailandunderthetaxiways.Thejourneytakesundertwominutes.The
Aerotrainoperatesbetweenthreetofiveminuteintervalsbetweenterminal.Automatictrain
controlsmanagetheoperationoftheentireAerotrainsystem,controllingthespeeds,headways,
stopsanddooropeningsinstations,andintegratingfunctionsthatenhancethereliabilityand
performanceofthesystem.[47]
KLIATransitandKLIAEkspresprovideslandsideconnectionsbetweenklia2andKLIAMain
TerminalBuilding(MTB),andviceversa.Thisinterterminaljourneytakes3minutestoconnect

combinedintoonesatelliteterminal.TheexpansionofTerminal2'ssatelliteterminalwillbe
exactlythesameasTerminal1'ssatelliteterminal,whereinitiallythesatelliteterminalwillhave
fourarms,andanotherfourarmswhentheterminalreacheditscapacity.Thereissufficientland
andcapacitytodevelopfacilitiestohandleupto97.5millionpassengersayear,fourrunwaysby

million)toupgradefacilitiesattheKLInternationalAirport(KLIA)inSepangtoaccommodatetheAirbusA380.Upgradingworksstarted
on3April2006,andwascompletedby28May2007.Worksincludetheprovisionofshouldersonbothsidesofthetwoexistingrunways
of15metersaswellasthetaxiways,buildingadditionalaerobridgesatthethreedeparturehalls,namelyC17,C27andC37,andenhancing
themezzanineloungesforupperdeckpassengersoftheaircraftatthedeparturehalls.EmiratesoperatesflightstoKualaLumpurwiththe
