Criminal Justice Program

Course Description:
This course is to acquaint the student with historical perspectives of law
enforcement and a variety of criminal justice career fields including, but not limited
to: Crime Scene Investigation, Law Enforcement, Police Science, Legal Studies, and
the Organization, purpose, and function of the Criminal Justice System. Course
content may include the discussion and viewing of some of mans worst crime
scenes. All are significant and vital to our past, present and future in the
investigation of such crimes committed by our fellow man. The goal is to become
increasingly aware of the social forces that shape our lives ad gain insight into the
many different aspects of law enforcement and how they influence societys views
and opinions on how we deal with and handle the crimes of man.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the History of law enforcement at its roots in our society
2. Identify the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 14th amendments and the application of
these amendments in the constitution
3. List court decisions related to the above listed amendments
4. Identify and Define key terminology used within the criminal justice system
5. Discuss future directions of the criminal justice system
6. Demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and
local law enforcement agencies and their legal jurisdictions
8. Explore multiple career pathways and identify a career choice that is
consistent with personal skills and academic strengths and long term goals
Career and Technical Education Program Outcomes:
Students will demonstrate an understanding of various areas of opportunity
to work within the law enforcement environment.
Demonstrate a working knowledge and understanding of the different law
enforcement agencies and their legal jurisdictions, and the training requires
for those appointments.
Identify a career choice and set goals for that choice that is consistent with
their personal skills, academic strengths, and long term goals.
Devise a plan for achieving career goals.

Instructional Philosophy:
The CTC programs utilize curriculum that is aligned with national business
and industry standards. The programs integrate the academic core areas of

Math, Science and Communication Arts along with comprehensive work


ethics competencies into their Career and Technical Education (CTE)
instruction. By understanding that students have diverse needs the CTC
instructors will use multiple instructional techniques to help students
succeed. The delivery methods are a mix of classroom, online, individual,
group, and hands-on or practical instruction. Homework or work outside of
the CTC may be an essential component to student success.

Major Course Projects*:
1. Problem Based Research This anchor project will help prepare you for
college and the career field of your interest. You will select a topic that is a
current industry issue, research the problem, formulate a possible solution,
and present your work in a written paper and/or in person.
2. Mock Crime Scenes Students will work with Mock Crimes Scenes that will
assess specific sets of skills, such as diagraming, evidence collection, and
report writing.
3. Basic Patrol Responses Students will practice various response techniques
to calls for service throughout the program.

Instructional Delivery Plan:
Classroom and lab instruction Technical and academic instruction will be
presented using many different methods of instruction.
Essential Skills Instruction Rigorous academic integration will be supported
with the help of the essential skills instructor.
Work Ethics Every day the students will be evaluated based on their work
ethic for the grading period.

Extra Help Students struggling with academic readiness, assignments,


attendance, work ethics or other area that affect their success at CTC will
receive assistance from CTC support staff as needed.

Course Grade:
To measure course outcomes students will be graded on the following criteria:
written exams, practical exercises, and oral presentations, written reports, spelling
tests, weekly assignments, video reviews, presenter/presentation reviews, in-class
activities, community services exercises and field trips. Letter grades are
determined by dividing the students total points by the total points possible to
determine a percentage, with letter grades based on the following:
A 95-100%

A- 90-94%

B+ 87-89%

B- 80-83%

C+ 77-79%

C 74-76%

C- 70-74%

D+ 67-69%

D 64-66%

D- 60-63%

F Below 60%

84-86%

I am willing to answer any questions regarding a students grade, but in order to


maintain privacy; I will not give out grades over the telephone, text messaging and
or email. Grade reports will be distributed on a quarterly basis and progress reports
will be sent.
The Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects all student records.
Under the law, I cannot and will not, release your students identification, grades or
other personal information to anyone but you without written permission.
I reserve the right to amend the syllabus as needed throughout the school year.

Student Expectations:
The Cadet will:

Respect others and their property at all times in and outside of class.
Use their manners at all times and refrain from using curse words.
Cadets will not throw things during class.
Be honest and truthful with self and others at all times.
Will be a law abiding, moral citizen at all times.
Will dress in uniform on appropriate days with a clean shirt and pants with
polished boots. On days when a uniform is not required, the Cadet will dress in
an appropriate and professional manner.
7 Will stand when an adult enters the classroom and will remain standing until the
Instructor and only the Instructor advises the class to be seated. (Exceptions:
while taking an exam or during the presentation of an outside speaker.)
8 Will at all times push their chair back under the table whenever they stand up
and leave their seated area for any reason.
9 Will refrain from using any personal item that requires batteries during class
time unless they have special permission from the instructor. All battery
operated devises will be placed a backpack or purse type and remain there until
specified times are reached.
10 Will not at any time fall asleep during class. (If you feel tired then you will stand
at the back of the classroom)
11 Will be prepared for work with all materials needed for the day and meet all

due dates and times. (If you do not meet required due dates or times specified
for an
assignment then you will receive 50% credit of earned score on second
due date given, there will be no third due date given, you will earn a zero score
if work is not turned in by second due date.)
12. Will only enter classroom with a positive attitude and open mind.
13. Is expected to follow all classroom expectations, safety rules in and out of the
lab activities and do as requested and or told at all times. (If you refuse to follow
classroom expectations it will be reflected in the Employability area of your
quarterly and semester grade along with resulting in possible disciplinary actions
individually and as a class.)
14. Students will not be allowed to record in whole or in part any audio or video of
any portion of instruction, exercise or daily routines.

Discipline
Discipline will follow the R-9 handbook. Additional classroom discipline will be given
as needed individually or as a class. Discipline examples are as follows: Cadets will
be given the choice of doing push-ups or writing a report as of part or in whole for
their disciplinary action.
