End of the Hollywood

Shocking news came to me via Facebook a few weeks
ago from James Duncan of the Wurlitzer Trust about
the imminent sale by tender of the Hollywood Cinema
and adjoining old wooden hall (the former Avondale
Public Hall, once home to our local library).
This is confirmed by a message placed on the
Wurlitzer Trusts website:
I am devastated to have to bring you this news! The
Hollywood Cinema in Avondale that has been home to
Auckland's historic 1926 Wurlitzer pipe organ for 32
years, is on the market to be sold as "land & buildings"
only and we have been instructed to remove the
Wurlitzer organ by September 30!!
If you have ever seen the Town Hall pipe organ, you
will know that we are not talking about a keyboard and
some loud speakers. The Wurlitzer is of a similar size
but with the addition of a large percussion section of
drums, cymbals, glockenspiels etc and will be a monumental task to dismantle, find storage for and then
hunt for a new home.
This has been heart-breaking news for the Trust that
has cared for and promoted the instrument for so many
years for 200-300 loyal supporters. Our shows have
brought so much pleasure to so many people we just
cannot let it end here! We WILL be searching for a
new home!

"Farewell to the Hollywood" show.
If you can support us with funding, please make contact urgently, from $5.00 to $50k!!
With regret
James Duncan - Chairman The Wurlitzer Organ Trust
of Auckland
On hearing the news from James, I contacted Duncan
Macdonald, member of the Whau Local Board, on his
behalf, and also notified the Heritage department in
Auckland Council as both the cinema and the hall
have B schedule protection under the old district plan.
It will be extremely sad to see both the loss of the
Wurlitzer and two more familiar and long-standing
landmark buildings in our community. This in the
cinemas centenary year!
