WelcometobeginningPaintingandDrawing!Thisisayearlongcoursedesignedtointroduce
studentstofundamentalprinciples,skills,history,andvisualcultureof2dimensionalart.Students
willgainappreciationofthefunctionandpurposeofartasavitalandmeaningfulmethodof
communicationacrosscultures,distance,andtime.Throughstudyandstudiopractice,students
willbuildastrongfoundationofskillsusingavarietyofmedia.

substituteforinclassstudioexperience.

About me:

IholdaBFAinstudioartfromtheUniversityofArizonawithafocusonpaintinganddrawing,andIkeepup
mypersonalpracticeinastudiodowntown.Itaughtartworkshopstoallgradelevelsfor10yearsbeforejoiningthefaculty
atTucsonHighandteachingEnglishfortwoyears.Thisismysecondyearteachingintheartdepartment.Mydaughteris
asophomoreatTucsonHighthisyear,andIamalsoafacultyadvisorfortheCreativeWritingClubandtheliterary
magazinehere.

Course Objectives
ThecontentandperformancegoalsforthiscoursearebasedontheArizonaStateStandardsfor
VisualArts.Uponcompletionoftheirstudy,studentswillbeableto:
Useavarietyoftools,materials,techniques,andskillstocreatetheirownartwork
Usetheprinciplesofartandtheelementsofthedesignintheirownwork,andbeableto
identifytheseinotherworksofart
Createartworktocommunicateideasandmeaning
Applycriteriatoassessthequalityofinprogressandfinishedartwork.
Analyzeandinterpretcontextualideas,meanings,andpurposesofartfromdiverse
culturesandtimeperiods.
Drawthoughtfulconclusionsaboutthesignificanceofart.

Grading Policy
Allworkisgradedusingaholistic,academicstandardsbasedrubricsystem.Forlarger,longterm
assignments,studentswillbeprovidedwithacopyofthedetailedrubricwhentheworkis
assigned.Largeassignmentgradingrubricsconsiderallpartsofthecreationprocess:planning,
workingdiligently,problemsolving,presentation,critique,andreflection.Small,inclassworkwill
bedueonthedayitisassigned(withsomeexceptions).Largeassignmentswillneverbeaccepted
lateunlessthestudentrequestsanextensionatleastoneweekbeforetheassignmentisdue(or
unlessthereisacatastrophicemergency).

GradeswillbeuploadedtoTUSDStatstwiceperweek,asstipulatedbydistrictpolicy.

Attendance Policy
Thisisprimarilyastudiobasedartclass,sonearlyalloftheworkwedoiscreatedduringclass
time.Consequently,studentsareexpectedtoattendeveryclassandtobe
ontime
andreadyto
workwhenthebellrings.PleaseseetheTucsonHighRightsandResponsibilitieshandbookfor
guidelinesaboutwhatconstitutesexcusedorunexcusedabsences,andtoviewtheschoolstardy
policy.

Late Work
Nolateworkwillbeacceptedunless:
Thestudentrequestsanextensionatleastoneweekbeforetheassignmentisdue
Thestudentexperiencesadocumentedemergency
Thestudentseducationplanstipulatesextratimeonassignments

Artistic Integrity
Inthisclass,studentsarechallengedtocreatetheirownoriginalwork.Whilethereisalong
traditionofappropriationinart,andthereisvalueinmimickingmasterartists,copyingotherwork
directlywithoutalterationisplagiarism,andwillnotbeaccepted.Likewise,copyingotherstudents
work,passingofftheideasofothersasyourown,orhavingsomeoneelsedoyourworkforyou,is
dishonestandaformofplagiarism;theseactionsareunacceptable.

Studio Time
Forstudentswhoneedtimetoworkoutsideofclass,thereareseveralopportunitiestocomeinfor
studiotime.Theroomwillbeopenduringconferencetimes(Mondaysfrom1:573:00PM,and
Wednesdaysfrom1:572:20PM).Ms.Burkwillalsobeheretohelpwithandsupervisestudio
timemostweekdaysafterschool.
