Julie,
I discussed your project with B Burton, and we both agree it is good from an infection control stand point. As
we discussed, anything from a dirty utility room needs to be cleaned before being brought to a patient room. We

recommend they are stored clean in a clean location. Please let me know when you start the two week trial.
Good luck.

B, please give me thumbs up or down.

I met with Julie today. She is more changing the nursing workflow, but not really how red bag waste is moved
around the unit. She will remove all bins that hold red bags, but the red bags will be available in each room. She
said there are few times the red bags truly are needed and they fall into two categories, quick laceration
management type or sustained diarrhea/vomiting. In the quick case, a bag will be set on the floor and filled
during care and then walked to dirty utility (not stored in the room). In the sustained situation, a nurse will bring
in a bin to put in the liner in, so the bag is stored in a non-penetrable container.
My only issue was storing bins in dirty utility, as they would need to be wiped down before entering a pts
room. They could also store clean bins in other areas around the unit.
So I think they should go ahead with the two trial, after which the bins will be returned while she surveys the
nurses on the process. If it does become permanent, we can walk through the process again.

UCH policy does not require a red bin in every room. Jack had some
questions, but those have been addressed. Most of the concerns are
addressed by having red bins available as commodes are in the dirty
utility rooms. It is not a requierment in colorado to have a red bin in
every room. Do we have a compliance person I should email?
Thanks,
Julie

Unfortunately, I am not available any of those dates or times. I know you and I have spoken about this already
so I defer to the rest of the group how they want to handle meeting. If everyone agrees to the plan, please let me
know and I will send out an email closer to the time so the faculty are aware.
