Introducing Assessment for Learning (AfL) in Three South East Asian

Countries

This symposium narrates and discusses how three different countries in South East
Asia: Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore, have embarked on the journey of Assessment
for Learning (AfL) at both policy and school-wide implementation levels. Taken
together, the narrations of the three cases illustrate the journey from learning for
assessment sake, towards assessment for learning. The symposium will highlight the
common elements of celebration of success, notably through differentiated approach
of professional learning across the system and garnering high level of interest and
ownership by school leaders. At the same time, it also highlights the ongoing work
that hopes to address the seemingly insurmountable resistances from teachers,
students and parents. The symposium finally poses the question of whether the
learning from assessment in these countries, has to be necessarily based on the same
vision, principles and strategies of AfL.
