TEACHING & INQUIRY...

LITERACY
Follows the AISB and PYP Scope and Sequence, and Common
Core Standards (refer to Parent Curriculum Handbook).
Encompasses:
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.
We aim to:
establish a love of language and appreciation of writing.
enable the student to communicate clearly in spoken and
written form.
apply skills and understanding to real life scenarios.
develop multiple reading strategies to help with decoding and
comprehension.

FIRST LITERACY UNITS AT A GLANCE.


Reading and writing through a workshop
approach
As much as possible, these studies will be aligned with our Units
of Inquiry.
Focus on the process rather than the product.
Parents will be encouraged to admire and celebrate student
work.

Readers Workshop
Unit 1: Taking Charge of Reading and Tackling Troubles

Students will learn a variety of word attack and comprehension


strategies to help them solve tricky words and to make sense of
their reading.

Writers Workshop

HANDWRITING AND SPELLING/PHONICS


Handwriting Without Tears
Handwriting program to teach correct formation and outcome of letters
Integrative approach
Three 15 minute sessions per week
Reading Reform
Phonics program focusing on a multi-sensory approach ( students will hear, say,
and write sounds to form words).
As students phonics improve, so will spelling
The workshop model encourages the editing process
Reading and writing through a workshop approach
Vocabulary and Spelling
Word Walls
Spelling/Vocabulary reinforcement/practice activities
No Excuse Words

MATHEMATICS
Follows the AISB Scope and Sequence, which is inline with PYP
Scope and Sequence and Common Core (US)
They can be found in the Parent Curriculum Handbook on the Parent Portal

We aim to:
establish basic mathematics facts
apply skills and understanding to real life scenarios
develop multiple strategies to solve problems
use a range of manipulatives

HOMEWORK
POLICY
Common across the grade level
Given on Monday to return on Friday
For the purpose of establishing solid habits and consolidate
learning. Homework should not be stressful for the family or child!

Reading -10-20 mins per evening


Spelling practice -5-10 mins per evening
One open-ended math problem per week- up to 10
mins
One communication prompt per week - 5 to15 min
each week

All general communication will be posted to the Grade 2 blog for
example:

Homework
Current or relevant learning engagements
student and class photos in action
