Touch Point Math

Describe the Class

This is a first grade class. This lesson plan will consist of teaching
students the how to add using touch point math. There are 23
students in the class. Three of them are ELL students. One of them
has ADHD.

Objective(s)

-Students will be able to memorize the touch point addition rules

after practicing.
-Students will be able to demonstrate the correct answer on
addition problems to the class.

-Students will be able to apply touch point math to addition

problems after discussing the rules of touch point math along with
the teacher.

Procedures

1 The teacher will write 3 addition problems on the

boards.
2 Students must come up with an answer and write it
down on paper.
3 The teacher will then give the answers and discuss
all the answers the students gave.
4 Then the teacher will hand out connecting blocks.
And tell the students to count 7 blocks and connect
them.
5 Then the teacher will tell the students to add 4 more.
6 The teacher will say that 7 blocks and 4 blocks equal
how many?
7 The students will then write down their answer on a
sheet. The teacher will give the right answer and will
discuss.
8 Since math is universal, students that are ELL will
better understand the subject by continuous
examples
9 The teacher will then tell the students there is an
easier way to add using touch point math.

10 Then the teach will hand out a sheet with one

problem on it reading 3+3= ?.
11 The teacher will show students what touch point
math is using a projector.
12 The teacher will point and mark dots on all the ends
of the 3. So there are 3 dots.
13 The teacher will then ask the students to do the
same.
14 The teacher will tell the students to add up 3 and 3
using touch point math on the numbers.
15 The teacher will give the answer and discuss.
16 The teacher will then show numbers 1-9. The
teacher will demonstrate to the students how to use
touch point math for each number.
17 The teacher will then write a few problems on the
board and have one student come up and solve the
problem demonstrating touch point math.
18 The teacher will do this with every student, giving a
new problem each time.
19 The teacher will always discuss what the answer is
and why that is the answer after every turn. Teacher
will always ask students for any questions or
comments.
20 Then the students will have a short quiz to test their
abilities and they will be permitted to work in groups
of 4 on the quiz.
21 Then the teacher will collect the quiz and go over
and discuss it.

22 Teacher will then grade the students based on a

grading rubric.

Grouping Structures
The teacher will be using whole-group discussions when introducing
the subject. This will continue up until the quiz that will be given
out. Then the students must work in small-group discussions to
complete the quiz. This will help the students gain independence
from the teacher.

VII

Modifications
-Teacher will spend more time giving examples, speaking clearly,
and paying close attention to the ELL students.
-The teacher will use be using a hands on method (connecting
blocks) to keep the ADHD child interested.

-Students will be able to work in small groups to help each other out
for the quiz.
-Peer tutoring will help out the ADHD student when it comes time
for the small-group discussions.
-Teacher will allow answers to be given orally.
-There will be no time for the quiz.
