Norco, CA 92860 A National FFA 3 Star Chapter Dear Parents and Students, Congratulations, you have an exciting opportunity to enroll in the Norco High School Agriculture Department, a nationally recognized program! The Norco High School Agriculture Department prides itself on its ability to meet the needs of Career and College ready students. Our program offers three career and college pathways which provide opportunities for attainment of skills as well as enhancement of academic content through application of theory. With completion of the Agriculture Science, Ornamental Horticulture, or Agriculture Mechanics Pathway, students will be immersed in learning. Students should consider choosing an agriculture class as an opportunity to learn about new concepts, become a well-rounded individual, and to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization. There is never a dull moment in agriculture class! Everyone will enjoy the wide variety of topics, activities, contests, and conferences! Depending on student interest, the following activities are likely options: Test water samples from the school pond. Identify common plants. Learn how to give injections to animals. Present a speech. Discuss the impact of agriculture in California. Apply for scholarships and awards. Practice job interview skills. Learn to arc weld. Travel across California and meet other FFA members. Wear awesome FFA t-shirts. Make flower arrangements. Grow vegetables. Host field trips for local elementary students. Attend fun events. Be in the local newspapers. Our courses offer diverse opportunities regardless of background or future plans. There is a wide variety of topics to learn about, events to compete in, and skills to learn! Ag class curriculum directly integrates science, math, and readings skills which will reinforce core academic concepts! The hands-on and real-world application of abstract concepts may be just the trick needed for a student to excel. Challenging content offers exciting opportunities for students to be competitive beyond FFA events. The reinforcement of concepts that are gained through agriculture classes has proven to help students succeed in college and careers. The link between student participation in FFA and their successfulness in college has been documented with a study conducted by Purdue University. Some highlights of their findings show that FFA members are more enthusiastic about and attach greater value to their school studies than the average student; FFA members are more actively engaged in school and community activities; and, FFA members are slightly more likely to attend two-year and four-year colleges as compared to their peers. We have a variety of courses that meet the University of California and California State University requirements, as well as four courses that are currently articulated with Mt. San Antonio Community College. Completion of these articulated courses will allow you to earn college credit while enrolled in high school! Whether your plans are to graduate high school and enter the work force, military, trade school, or college - the Norco High School Agriculture Department is offering students a chance to prepare themselves for all future possibilities! Okay, maybe Agriculture and FFA sound pretty interesting! Where can I get more information? We will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday January 14, 2015 at 6 p.m. which will give you the opportunity to participate in an FFA meeting as well as a chance to tour our classrooms and facilities and ask questions. In the meantime, please feel free to check out the California FFA website at www.calaged.org or the National FFA Website at www.ffa.org. Both sites provide a lot
