Movement/Health Lesson Plan Template

EDUC 240
Introduction to PE and Health for Elementary Teacher

Course Objective: Develop an integrated, age-appropriate Physical

Education lesson plan that incorporates state standards across
disciplines, has accommodations for children of varying ability and
motor development levels, effective assessment, and outlines the
aspects of a physical safe environment.
INTASC Standard: Standard #7: Planning for Instruction
The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting
rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas,
curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of
learners and the community context.

Title and Summary of Lesson:

Capture the Flag
Children will be placed into teams of two. Each team will have a flag that they are
responsible for hiding and guarding form the other team. The goal of the game is
the capture the other teams flag without being tagged and sent to jail. The team to
capture the other teams flag first will win.

State Standards Addressed (List and Describe):

3.1.1 Demonstrate mature fundamental locomotors and manipulative movement
skills with variations
Example: demonstrate variations of jumping (e.g. Vertical, horizontal) , and
throwing a ball ( e.g.2 hands, underhand, side arm)
3.5.1 Work cooperatively with others to obtain common goals in a game situation.
Example: Practice the instep soccer pass with a partner while applying concepts of
movement (e.g. power, direction, time) to make the passes more accurate.
National Standards Addressed (List and Describe):
Standard 1: Students demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement
patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2: Students demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts,

principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of
physical activities.
Standard 3: Students participate regularly in physical activity.

Motor Development Concepts addressed (List and Describe):

Gross Motor Skills:
Running, tagging, jumping and crawling.

Curriculum Integration:
Math will be integrated into the game. When the children are sitting in jail, the
students will have to solve five math problems to escape jail.

Objectives:
The students will discuss strategies for attaining the other teams flag.
The students will solve math flashcards.
The students will plan how to protect their teams flag while trying to capture the
other teams flag.

Materials:
Flags or cones
Math flashcards

Amount of Time Needed:

Half and hour to an hour depending on how long the game runs

Organizing/Grouping Students for Activity (Describe how you will group students):

I will organize the students by birthdays. Birthdays before June will be one team and
birthdays July and after another team. If the teams are uneven, children born the
closet to the other team will move.

Attention-Getter:
The teacher will hide the flag and ask one child to try and capture the flag. When
the child gets close, the teacher will tag him/her and make her out. The teacher will
ask the children, Who else wants to try to take the flag? Then, the children will
break into teams to play.

Procedure: (step by step)

Organize the children into two groups based on birthdays.

Explain to the children that they will be playing capture the flag.

Explain the rules of capture the flag.

Assign the children to hide their groups flag.

Instruct the students to begin playing

When children come to jail, teacher will show them five math flashcards for
them to solve. When done, the child may return to the game.

The game will continue until one team is able to capture the other teams flag.

Assessment/Feedback:
The teacher can assess the childrens math ability when the children are doing
flashcards in jail. Thus, she can see the different mathematical levels the children
are at.
