British Military Administration and Nationalism after the Second World War
Extract A: fne ending of Japanese Occupation

The Japanese occupation of Brunei ended in 1945. The defeat of the Japanese forces
took only a few weeks and then the British Military Administration (BMA) was set up to
govern Brunei. The effects of the occupation took time to deal with- For example, the oil
industry presented problems and many diseases were affecting the population severely.
Extract B: The British Military Administration in Action

The BMA continued to operate for a year after the defeat of Japan. Though much was
achieved, there were problems before the BMA was ready to hand over the administration
to the civilian authorities. Bruneians found reasons to be critical of some actions under
the BMA, and at the same time nationalist influences were developing.
