L5: Intel 8086 Microprocessor

Features of the 8086 microprocessor:

*

*
*
*
*

First 16-bit P, developed by Intel

Hit the market in 1978 (8088 in 1979)
Designed using HMOS technology
Packs approx. 29000 transistors on the chip
40 pin chip DIP and CERDIP
Clock speeds: 8086 -1 @10MHz, 8086-2 @ 8MHz and the 8086 @5MHz
CISC processor
Can directly address 1MB of memory

Internal architecture of the 8086

The 8086 has two independent functional units:

1. Bus Interface unit (BIU
2. Execution Unit (EU)
Microprocessor (BME307)

Bus Interface Unit (BIU)

*
*
*

Responsible for all memory accesses and I/O port accesses by the 8086.
Communicates with devices outside the microprocessor.
Fetches the instructions (and data) from the memory.

Execution unit (EU)

*
*

Responsible for executing the instructions fetched by the BIU.

Decodes the instruction, issues control signals, and carry out Arithmetic and Logical
operations on the operand (data).

Pipelined architecture of the 8086

Since the fetching and execution of an instruction are performed together by the 8086
architecture, the architecture is referred as Pipelined Architecture (i.e. Parallel
architecture).
