Course Overview:
Welcome to Sociology 11! Sociology is the study of societyits development,
structures, interactions, and the collective behavior and relationships between
organized human beings. In this course we will examine relationships and
interactions between people, which in turn forms our experiences in society. You can
expect to examine popular theories, beliefs, values, and experiences that determine
the people we become and how we contribute to society. This course has been
designed to mimic the format of an introductory university Sociology class. Most of
our classes will be used to discuss texts (films, novels, articles, etc.) that we have
viewed in order to connect them to society and ourselves.

Evaluation
Your term and final mark with be calculated from a range of assignments, quizzes
and projects. Your final mark will be cumulative. Criteria for each assignment will
always be given and marked accordingly against it. Students are welcome to ask me
for further feedback on assignments and given marks. Assignments must be
submitted in person on the due date by 3:00pm, or on the due date via email (when
appropriate) by 5:00pm. Late assignments are not accepted and result in a
mark of zero unless previously arrangements have been made.

Course Expectations:
Students are expected to be punctual, prepared (see class materials) and
attentive in class at all times

Students are expected to contribute to the classroom in a positive way.


Mutual respect for peers and teacher is non-negotiable. Negative attitudes
and disrespect towards peers, teacher, and/or course content will not be
tolerated.

Students are expected to have phones & electronic turned off and stored
away at all times. Students not following this expectation will have their
item(s) placed in the basket for the remainder of the classno exceptions!

Students are expected to attend class regularly, and inform the teacher of
absences in advance whenever possible. When classes are missed, it is the
students responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher to make up
missed work.

Classroom Community:
My goal is that each student in this class enjoys his/her time here, feels valued,
respected and trust towards/for others. With the help of students, I hope to create a
family-style classroom environment that is relaxed, fun, welcoming and based on
the values of trust and respect. This type of classroom community is built by having
many discussions, open choice and sharing, getting to know each individual, and
letting go of previous assumptions and cliques.
Due to the content of this course, many of the issues we discuss may be sensitive
for some of us. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, quietly leave the room and
return when ready. At times, students and the teacher may feel inclined to share
personal stories and experiences. Students are expected to maintain class trust by
keeping these stories private between class participants only.
Likewise, students are encouraged to keep an open mind when learning about new
concepts or reconsidering previously held ideas and vales. More importantly,
students must always respect the values, ideas and opinions of others that differ
from your own.

As the teacher, I have an open-door policy. Students who are at any time feeling
stressed, unhappy, or overwhelmed about the course, or any other issue are always
welcome to come see me. With good reason, I will always work with students to find
develop alternative options to help with personal or school-related problems.

parents. Also, assignments and course updates will be posted on the class website
(link here). My office is in 3ORL, students may drop by at any time.
